Stayed at Samara 03 January 2014. Had booked the Sibella Suite (3-5 Jan) which is supposed to be a 4*.To me it was no different from a 2* or 3* accommodation. The room was not clean, it lacked in every way in terms of what we had expected especially for the amount paid. We did get moved to another room for the night of the 3rd Jan, checked out a day earlier than we were supposed to as we would have had to pay more to stay in the more comfortable room we were moved to.
The staff and the game driver were great though. Food ok not that great.
I did mail Samara on my return and they were apologetic for the experience.

Dear Mr/Mrs Qwenga

As per our email correspondence.

We accommodated your booking which was on very short notice into the Sibella Suites, which offer the entry level accommodation at Samara. Your expectation had been for the more luxurious suites which were regrettably all booked except for one remaining Lodge Suites where we could accommodate you for just the one night. We always greatly regret that guests’ expectations are not met and trust that the elements which you did enjoy might persuade you to return to Samara for a longer visit where you can enjoy the best of Samara.

Best Wishes
Team Samara

I stayed with my ten year old son just before Easter this year. From the minute we were met at the tiny airstrip nearby, we were made to feel so welcome by the entire team at Samara. Our accommodation was luxurious and the food was excellent....and plentiful. It was my son's dream to see cheetah in the wild...not an easy task! Thanks to the diligence of Gibson our ranger, we saw 3 male cheetah with a kill....we were so close! It was amazing. We were also lucky enough to see Sibella and two of her now grown-up cubs sunning themselves on the mountainside. My son's face on seeing these beautiful creatures is something I will never forget. Thank you for our treasured memories. You do everything so well. We will be back with the rest of our family!

I seldom extend to Excellent, but Samara makes it to this level primarily for the way the staff look after the guests.

Having been at similarly-priced resorts elsewhere, what I found special about Samara was the fact that it has fewer visitors and is personalised in a way that the others are not. This is an excellent lodge for group or family bookings as there would then be no disturbance to the group dynamics. Food was excellent. I won't repeat what has been well covered in the other reviews, except for the reference to the 'Out of Africa' feel of the Karoo lodge, complete with Buffalo who come in to graze on the lawn every now and then.

The reserve highlights Cheetah and Rhino, and I am happy to see these two endangered species being well looked after in a reserve with a lot of space in the heartland of the Karoo - away from the poachers currently endangering many reserves elsewhere in Africa. Only one caution - don't go to Samara expecting full 'Bushveld' experience; the Karoo is not as species rich as (say) Chobe or Sabi Sands, but like Shamwari it is easier to get to and has no Malaria.

An amazing private reserve, doesn't have all the 'big five' but what it does have is clearly healthy and well maintained

Three distinct biomes allow for a wide variety of game

Rangers were excellent, very knowledgeable (especially about tracking) and allowing as much on-foot exploration as practical - we got within 30m of a pair of white rhino on foot, and less than 5m from a cheetah family

Staff are universally friendly and helpful, food varied from excellent (breakfast and lunch) to good (dinner) although the braai evening wasnt to our tastes

Cottage was unbelievably luxurious - possibly the best accommodation we have ever had

We have just returned home following a 3 week road trip in South Africa. Samara was our final destination and it seems that unwittingly we had saved the best for last! We stayed in the Karoo Lodge which was a lovingly restored 'old style' homestead filled with polished antiques and comfortable sofas and beautiful creative touches everywhere you looked. Our room was large, airy and very comfortable with a large terrace. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all served out on the 'wrap around' verandah which encircles the lodge. We enjoyed the game drives immensely, it is an experience from another time - a previous era - with time taken to enjoy and appreciate everything around you. The landscapes, the vistas, the vegetation, the animals large and small...........it was a delight to be able to savour at leisure with no radio communication with other vehicles. If you are looking to see the Big Five in 3 hours then this is not the place for you. However, if you want to be looked after in a totally personal and caring way as if you were a family member, and arrive back at the lodge after an evening game drive to find that your scented bath has been run for you awaiting your return then you are probably going to love this place. The food is delicious and the staff are all people that you want to take home with you!
