After travelling from Stellenbosch, our party comprised of two couples, were excited to be welcomed into, what appeared from the web, a lovely stop over however we were met with anything BUT a warm welcome. Not only was our booking "lost" and our quoted price increased beyond our budget but the lady welcoming us was absolutely rude, severely unapologetic and frankly unprofessional. Although we are students that have just graduated it is an embarrassment and insult to be treated like children when offered mattress's on the floor as a solution to obesa lodges mistake! furthermore the picture on the web and 'story' of what to expect are grossly misleading. we will certainly make an effort to deter any fellow friends (of which there are many) traveling through graaf reinet to rather opt for a far nicer stay at somerset stables as obesa lodge is disappointing, dismal and overpriced. it is unfortunate above all else that the management did not handle the situation better as that would have greatly changed our overall experience in the lovely Graaf- Reinet.

From the web reviews and interior picture posted on the GR website, we were expecting this place to be lovely and bright on the inside - good fun for the kids. Sadly the inside of our house didn't meet with our expectations. Painted throughout in a beigey grey and sparsely furnished it really lacked soul. Felt a bit like staying in a large old school hall of residence. That said, it did have wall panel heaters so was at least warm enough on cold evenings. Wouldn't rush back.

I am truly sorry that you had one of the dull rooms. We have different types of accommodation (self-catering units and rooms with en suite-bathrooms). Each room or unit has a different theme and we tried to please as many guests as possible by providing different interiors i.e. for the more daring as well as the less daring.

Away from the main street; clean accommodation. Aircon advertised on website but not available in all rooms, however, and self-catering facilities are very limited, i.e. cupboard in bedroom containing crockery, eating utensils, bottle opener, kettle, microwave and bar fridge only. Coffee bags, tea bags, sugar and milk sachets provided. Swimming pool steps difficult for elderly to climb as they are narrow and handrail is very ow.

We have different types of accommodation - self-catering units as well as rooms with en suite-bathrooms. The self-catering units for 2 or 3 people have double or queen size beds, air-cons, en suite-bathrooms and mini-kitchens (microwave, fridge, 2 plate mini-ovens, toaster, etc.) and these units are between R430 and R480 per night. The units are La Med, Spring Breeze, English Country and Sundowner. The self-catering units for families have fully equipped kitchens and have ceiling fans in the rooms. Our 2 bedroom cottage, called Familythyme Cottage, sleeps 4 people and the cottage is R560 per night. Our 3 bedroom cottage, called Flower Power Cottage, sleeps 6 people and the cottage is R660 per night. We also have rooms with 2 single beds, TV, ceiling fan, tea/coffee facilities, fridge, microwave, en suite-bathrooms. These rooms are not self-catering units and they are only R360 per night. These rooms have names eg Kalahari, Crocs, Ingwe, Tusk, Malmaison, Masai, Clifton, Rhapsody, Samurai, Bad Mama. Breakfast is always extra/optional at R65 per person.

Obesa Lodge lies just off the main street of Graaf-Reinet, which is an attractive town with over 250 buildings of National Monument status and importance. The Lodge consists of a number of houses along one street, all separate from each other, and each one coloured brightly. We had 'Sundowner', which was a glorious shade of pink, but equally we could have been sleeping in lilac, orange or blue, etc.

Our room was large, airy, and spotlessly clean. The bed was huge, and we had a sitting room area, and a small kitchenette should we have needed it. We looked out over the pool area, and sat out in beautiful sunshine admiring the view.

Breakfast is delivered to your room the next morning by a maid, but that system doesn't work too well - the cooked breakfast was less than hot, and the fried eggs were well and truly cooked to solidity by the time they reached us!

The staff were friendly, and value for money was terrific. If you stay there, do make sure you visit the cactus garden opposite - a fantastic range of cacti, owned by an ex-lawyer for whom cacti is a passion rather than a hobby.

Obesa Lodge is situated on the edge of the Town Centre and is within walking distance to restaurants etc. The accommodation is clen and comfortable and Sonja is friendly and helpful. The rooms/lodges are all decorated in bright but not garish colours/themes. Breakfast can be ordered although there are self catering facilities. Excellent quality and value in Graaf Reinet.
