“Seclusion in paradise”
Reviewed May 3, 2011

We stayed for 10 nights on our honeymoon and still can't stop talking about how wonderful the island and the staff were and could go on forever about how wonderful the food, the chalet, the birds, the sand and the tranquility were. It really is the ideal location for a quiet honeymoon if you want to 'get away from it all' but still live in luxury. It is not for those who want a wild night life, discos and karaoke and probably too quiet for most children and if you can't entertain yourself and can't live without the TV or your mobile then this isn't for you. It is also a great resort for watching and photographing birds and the other wildlife, such as various crabs, free range tortoises and turtles and geckoes.

we have just returned from Denis Island after 6 nights. we chose this island for it's exclusive, desert island, honeymoon appeal which we shared with the the other 50- 60 guests which we didn't quite expect, many of which were young children

the island is beautiful, a place to sit back and relax and let time wander by as we sat and admired the sea only yards from our chalet with its private beachfront. we looked forward to the evening meals, following buffet breakfasts and lunches but were left disappointed after only 3 a la carte meals and three further buffets which were not up to standard for five star accomodation! it felt a little tired overall, with signs of cost cutting here and there on the smaller items (like food!) but unfortunately , the bits that mattered.

we are still unsure as to whom this would a[ppeal, kids or no kids and thought that the main island of Mahe probably offered more. what we did get in abundance were a huge number of mosquito bites which we hope will ease off soon...

We've just spent a magical time on Denis.
We were welcomed off the plane and from then on, the staff could not do enough for us.
We had a beach villa, which exceeded our expectations in terms of comfort , space and facilities. The dinner menus were varied and delicious.
In addition to the above one of the best hightlights for us was the scuba diving, just a few minutes by boat then we were in some of the best diving we have ever experienced anywhere, the abundance of marine life (sharks, rays & turtles on every dive) was fantastic.
We came here to celebrate our 35th Wedding Anniversary and Denis Island proved to be the right chioce. We both want to go back as soon as possible.

Room Tip: Room 29 quiet, private, own beach front, heaven

Absolutly fantastic. It was worth the trip from Atlanta! We will definitly be back .very small hotel, beautiful as on the pictures. You have the feeling to be VIPS without being surrounded by them ..(the VIPS!)or they are very discreet...perfect for quiet time with your spouse or friends.
Very low key and luxurious as the same time, no bling, bling.
Very romantic, perfect for honeymooners, anniversaries.

The outside bathroom fabulous and the cottages they call "Chalet" are beautifully decorated . Very chic. No TV,No phone, no cell phone working and just 2 computers for emergency...Perfect

The manager (Roberto) was great with us. We will remember the fun discussions about the swiss cheese, parmesan and gruyere! He will remember us...The French! who drank all the Rose!

Thank you to the kind, discreet, efficient team who attended to us

We recently stayed for 7 nights. The staff are very friendly and extremely helpful. The food is superb with plenty of variety (themed nights include Japanese/Sushi, Creole, BBQ and Indian). Portions are generous and everything is very fresh due to the majority of food being sourced from the farm on the island to the North of the airstrip.

The rooms are clean and spacious. Go for one of the villas nearer the water (without the larger garden) as there is little point to the added space, and the ones nearer the water have an outside bed under cover. Also, try and go for one of the villas numbered 1-14, on the south side of the western point - these have a much nicer beach with no erosion - those on the northern side have a less impressive beach and some quite unsightly stretches covered with sandbags.

Drinks are on the expensive side, but this is a high end resort and this is to be expected - a couple of cocktails a night each, a bottle of wine on a couple of nights and the odd beer added just over £1,000 to the bill for seven nights.

One bit of advice - when signing bills for drinks at the bar or dinner, do not leave a tip by adding it to the bill - at the end your total bill will have tax (12%) and service (10%) added, meaning any tips you leave will have tax and service added on to them.

Also bring plenty of insect repellent as the mosquitoes can be quite active in the evening and at night.

We selected Denis Island following the advice of a Seychelles travel specialist recommended by a major travel magazine. We specified we were looking for a quiet and relaxing island destination featuring good swimming & snorkeling – we even changed our travel dates from June / July to October/ November following the travel specialist’s recommendations regarding the time of the year best suited for swimming & snorkeling.
The first impression of the resort was very positive. Pick up at the air strip was efficient and the open air lobby was appealing and inviting. Checking in was a breeze.
Upon arriving at our chalet, which was spacious and right in front of the beach, we were surprised to learn that the doors could not be locked and the tap water was not potable. Exterior doors led straight into the master bedroom and the separate / kids’ bedroom. The outdoor showers were convenient but had very low pressure, so we decided to bathe our daughters (aged 5 and 9) in the tub, but the yellowish water in the tub was a definite turnoff, so we ended up not using the tub at all.
Breakfast was nice, never crowded, but a bit repetitive - our daughters enjoyed the tiny quail eggs. Lunch was also nice, but it too got repetitive. At dinner the menu options were extremely limited (we could not escape broccoli, not matter how much we tried) and the taste was rather disappointing (despite its pretentious presentation), which we did not expect considering the rave reviews we had read about the food at this resort. The dinner menu was not child friendly at all. Dinner was served at 8 pm – much too late for our 5 year old who slept through it each and every night. Mid through our stay relief came in the form of a Japanese theme dinner - the presentation and variety (sushi, sashimi, tempura, etc) were amazing and the taste was outstanding. Our 9-year old still rants and raves about the experience.
As beer lovers we were disappointed when we determined the only beer brands that could be had on Denis were EKU and Seybrew - the only two brands of beer that were widely available in the Seychelles almost two decades ago when I last visited, which was rather surprising given the fact that even the most remote convenience stores on Mahe now carry most international, recognizable beer brands (Budweiser, Stella Artois, Carslberg, Heineken, etc).
Mosquitoes on Denis are quite ferocious, even though we never saw them and applied insect repellent right after waking up, before lunch, and again in the evening right after showering. One night our 5-year old woke up complaining of a sore foot – she had eight bites on the sole of one foot. During the ten days we were on Mahe we were never bitten by mosquitoes.
Swimming pools are not important to us, but we could not help but notice the pool was extremely small. As we had conveyed to the travel specialist whose services we used to book our stay on Denis (as well as La Digue), the main purpose of our stay (and the reason why we left the spacious villa with terrific views we were staying at on Mahe and changed our original travel plans) was to enjoy great swimming and snorkeling with the kids in a serene, idyllic environment. Consequently, the greatest disappointment regarding our stay on Denis Island was the realization that the beach in front of our accommodation offered disappointing snorkeling and swimming conditions. There is a sudden transition between entering the water and losing foot, aggravated by strong currents. Consequently it was rather challenging to keep the children safe in the water, and we ended up not having the relaxing, enjoyable beach experience we had hoped for.
Many beaches in the Seychelles are well protected by coral reefs, but on this side of the island reefs are spotty, which might explain (even if only partly) the visible signs of beach erosion.

We stayed on Denis Island 20 years ago, and loved it. We went back again 3 weeks ago and found it much much better. The new owner, Mrs Mason has worked very hard indeed to improve the hotel and a Swiss manager is now installed. The staff are very cheerful and and looked after us very well. The food has a strong Creole bias, but the ingredients are very fresh, as most of them are home grown on the island's farm. The fish come from ocean to plate on a daily basis, and guests can go along on the island's boat to help catch them. The individual cottages are very spacious and comfortable with effective air conditioning and the sound of the waves and bird song lull one to sleep.Beaches swimming and snorkling over the reef are all one could wish for, and the jungly bit in the middle is fascinating to walk through. We can't wait to go back!
