While traveling recently in Rwanda, I was fortunate to be able to do a gorilla trek near Musanze. Previous to my two days in the area, I had traveled the countryside far and wide; by the time I got to Muzanze, I was tired, in need of hot water and power, decent food and a great mattress. When we pulled in to the Gorillas Hotel, my heart skipped a beat. With outside pool, a dining room with open doors and a cool breeze blowing throughout, attentive staff which served to please, and noted cleanliness throughout, I was happy to be in a hotel that offered all of these, as well as an abiding sense of safety and security. It sounds trite, but I very much appreciated the simple things there: night stand lamps for reading, well-appointed closets and drawers, a desk, great bed and plenty of hot water for a good shower. Indeed, traveling in Africa, which has its fair share of quaint bed and breakfast's and guest houses, where I had stayed the past several nights, one can find charm and quirkiness not found in chain hotels. However, with sore muscles and a pervading need for privacy and first world amenities, I was so happy to be in this updated hotel that employed all of the above. Highly recommended. Great bang for the buck.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the pool on the third floor are quiet and offer outdoor balconies.

Having never been to Rwanda before, Viewbaron and his wife had no idea what to expect, but also stayed here with an open mind.

Pleasantly surprised- perhaps at sounds a little patronising, but I just assumed it would be third world time but was totally wrong.

The hotel itself is in a good location for the obvious primate activity. The rooms are clean and have plenty of hot water.

The food ( Viewbaron likes his fillet steak, so Opted for it ) was well made and pretty cheap in comparison to, say, nairobi hotels.

You can stay here and can expect just as pleasant a visit as one would from a 3 star uk hotel. The local guides also eat here ( we bought ours dinner ) when we caught his eye from across the dining room. Of course there are some shortfalls, but these are only evident if I tried to compare directly to a richer country, which would be slightly obscene.

It is always a great drive to Muzanze, the hotel is in the small town by the road side, clean rooms. But evenings are boring, that could be improved by evening events and campfires by the pools?

The food is average.
You can do better Gorilla!

I didn't stay in this hotel but we did eat there one night (Only!!)
The food (when it came) was quite good albeit expensive for the area. Unfortunately it took nearly two hours to receive our food and our table of 6 were the only people in the restaurant!!

Room Tip: Don't be too hungry when eating here

We stayed here for 2 nights when visiting the gorillas. We reserved a family room and when we arrived it was in repair. So we took a double bed room, which was quite cozy! The rooms overall were clean, the food was fine, and the staff was friendly. They did not have mosquito nets and we were covered in bites after the first night. The management said they do have the plan to purchase them, but not sure when that will be so plan ahead. We spent the first night on the first floor and it was extremely noisy- request the second or third floor if you don't want to hear every noise from the kitchen or people coming home late at night.

We stayed for 2 nights before and after our gorilla trek. Comfortable, clean, friendly staff. The pool needed some cleaning, we were the only ones in it and it didn't look all that inviting. There is a fellow who cleans your boots when you return from the gorilla trek, almost made them look brand new. The breakfast buffet was ok, nothing fantastic but good enough to get your going before your trek. The menu for lunch and dinner was good and the food not too bad but the service was unbelievably slow.

Upon arriving at this hotel after gorilla trekking we weren't majorly impressed but thought "we're only here for the night and we've been in worse!". The room was just about clean enough but is in desperate need of a refurb, the electric was also not on when we arrived. No mosi nets or mosi curtains on the windows and no air con/heating but the shower was good, but the drainage wasn't and bubbled up over the bathroom floor!
The food at lunchtime was edible, but God only knows how long it had been sitting over the inadequate burners as it wasn't hot (temperature), but the spice blew your head off! 2 Hrs later the hubby had chronic diarrheoa which wasn't the best start to our honeymoon as it lasted a week till we could get antibiotics. Imodium didn't touch it! Evening meal a la carte was average and on par with the rest of the hotel.
It was raining in the afternoon so thought we'd venture to the fitness room which was signposted and came across a staff member having a sleep in a room which obviously wasn't a gym!
All in all the worst hotel I've stayed in in Africa.
However, there are nice views of the volcanos and its not a long drive after gorilla trekking.
