“Ask for a room in the new wing only. Old rooms are not worth it.”
Reviewed May 25, 2010

I stayed 4 nights at this hotel while doing some trekking to visit gorillas. It is used by tour operators for customers looking for reasonable accommodation (more on that later). It is well located in Ruhengeri and an easy 20-30min drive (on a good road) to the Volcanoes National Park.

Initially we were pre-booked in a 110$ 'suite', but ended up in a 90$ standard room. I actually didn't know it, but this is only the next day while chatting with the reception that I got the hint.

I asked to change but was told there was nothing left available, which we found odd given we could not really picture the hotel really busy in any sort of way, except a small local business meeting.

Another day passed where I could not stand the bed (the mattress was actually much larger than the frame and laying onto it, it would literally wrap you like a hot dog). Our room was located street side and thus pretty noisy.

After talking again to the reception the next day a room was found to be available in the new wing. Not a suite, but this is night and day compared to the old wing. So clearly insist for your room to be located in the new wing where rooms are clean and spacious and much more quiet (especially garden side...).

Shower pressure in both rooms was on the low side. Not a trickle, but far from Niagara Falls either.

The food at the restaurant is relatively good (basic rwanda cuisine with a twist), though as is customary in Rwanda, service can be extremely slow. Prices are fair.

Wifi is available for free through the hotel and works relatively well.

Now a word of advice.. this is one of the few hotels that has somewhat "reasonable" prices to go Gorilla trekking. Sadly they can get away with some overpriced service because lodges used by most UK and US tour operators go totally nuts with pricing while offering nothing special at all. For instance Governor's Camp Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge price ranges from 384 to 679$ per person per night (sharing) depending on season (yes that's 768 to 1358$ for a couple !) , Virunga Lodge, a pseudo eco-lodge charges 500$ a night. Note also that Virunga Lodge is located far from the park and it will take you 1h drive to get there a good portion of it being a very bad dirt road.

They have just opened a new wing. I spent a night there in a spotless and quiet room, with a brand new and very functional bathroom. I do not like many of the bedrooms in the old wing, as they lack light and air. The new bedrooms are much more rational, yet I like fresh and clean air: here, like in many new hotels in Rwanda, I wonder why they do not put mosquito nets at the bedrooms' windows.

It is a comfortable hotel, with wireless for the customers, a good stay for my business visits. Food is nothing to scream about, but good and healthy. Staff are corteous and keen to help. They have a very good although not huge conference room.

Though frequently used by several international tour operators, this tourist class hotel did win the prize of our worst stay during our Uganda-Rwanda trip. Perhaps it’s one of the best in town, but this only informs you how bad the others are. At first sight, our room looked good. It was clean and the beds weren’t worn out. But soon we discovered the toilet flush wasn’t working properly. We had to take off the reservoir’s cover and pull the flush that way. Maybe we are not too smart, but during our 2-night stay, we couldn’t find the trick how to mix the shower’s hot and cold water since the warm water tap was loose. Moreover, it was dripping continuously, making a loud and enervating ticking noise, still loud enough to keep us from sleeping, even after we closed the bathroom door. But that was only after the other noises had stopped. Our room was on the first floor, but we could easily hear – and understand! – the TV at the reception, while the kitchen noises came up along the window’s side of our room. It was impossible to close doors quietly, so everybody slammed with the doors – and we could hear people’s mobile phones ringing three rooms further – and of course, follow their discussions. So, if you have booked this hotel: bring ear-plugs. You will need them! The hotel’s best feature is its restaurant. Though curries aren’t available, the food served is tasty. But if you want to feast on the breakfast buffet, make sure you come early – or you’re looking at an empty table.
