La Palme Hotel
Ranked #3 of 23 Ruhengeri B&B and Inns
Reviewed January 4, 2012

We stayed in La Palme by accident (we were meant to stay in another hotel but they had double booked us) but we were not disapointed. We arrived after our gorilla trek and the powerful hot shower was very welcome.

The staff were very friendly from when we arrived and helped us at every opportunity. We stayed in the new wing of the hotel which was very clean - everywhere was spotless. The hotel was also very peaceful and our room overlooked some nice gardens. The decor (bed spreads particularly) could do with updating but aside from that had no complaints about the room.

Wifi was also good to have although would only work in the lobby/restaurant area. One negative would be dinner in the evening. Took almost an hour for food to come (even though there were only two families in the restaurant) and breakfast (omlette) was not much quicker.

All in all a nice place to stay and even better after a long hike!

We stayed in Tanzania and Rwanda for more than 4 weeks in several hotels and lodges. This hotel turned out to be the worst one. The staff is kind and helpful and the room is average, but depending on the location of your room, there is quite some (traphic) noise. In the evening, the restaurant is too small to serve all customers at the same time. And we wouldn't advice you to eat from the buffet. Eating from the menu is OK though. Free wireless internet wasn't working during our stay, but if you'd like to, you can use a computer from the hotel. All in all, our overall rating for this hotel is poor.

We found this hotel to be clean, quiet, and friendly. The new wing is nice to stay in. We had good service and food. Consistent hot water was appreciated. The soup is especially good, and having wifi to upload our pictures of the gorillas was wonderful. Please ignore the negative remarks.

Room Tip: Stay in the new wing.

I was booked at the La Palme by my hosts and found the hotel to be clean and functional.
The corridors, all tiled, echoed steps and the doors, in the absence of a seal, did rattle some when being opened, but as most clients retire early - many leave at 6 am for gorilla tracking, primate tracking or guided walks in the nearby Volcanos National Park - this is not a sleep robbing issue.
Breakfast is served from 5 am onwards, much needed when heading up the volcanic mountains as I did for the gorilla tracking and provides sustenance enough, cereals, toast, fruits and eggs cooked to order - fast. I liked the spices African tea, rich in ginger taste and served piping hot.
The staff at the reception, but also in the dining room, were not just 'friendly, but went out of their way to please and help, and did so without prodding or after repeated questions, but promptly and with a smile ...
A simple hotel but for sure recommended and good value for money in Ruhengeri / Musanze / Rwanda.

Room Tip: Quiet rooms facing to the back are preferable.

Most of the recent postings are spot on -- this is a clean and comfortable spot that is more functional than the $500/night alternatives. The complimentary wifi had a strong signal and was appreciated. The garden bar area is a relaxing area to catch a football match with a refreshing beer and catch up on email and the like.

I am glad I read earlier to request a room in the new wing -- and would add to request a room with a garden view, away from the road. The rooms have a small balcony, which is more calm while viewing the hills, not the street and passing crowds. We changed rooms after a few minutes.

The staff were friendly, but seemed language challenged (in both English and French), which was frustrating, but at least they were trying their best to be helpful (except one exception at the front desk).

The location is good - just outside of town, and walkable to a nearby pizzeria. If your tour group arranged for meals to be included in your stay, be sure to confirm with your company the terms. The food was pretty good -- well, like the place -- if Average = Above Average for Ruhengeri.

This was the only hotel we stayed in that we didn't book ourselves and we didn't really like it. Its big, sole-less, bad service, below average food (which made us both ill - not great prior to a gorilla trek), not that clean... There isn't much choice in the town but this is way below average compared to other hotels in the country. Tour groups seem to love it - I guess they get a good deal but am not sure the customer does.
