“nice room, nice garden”
Reviewed September 1, 2013

Stayed there for 4 nights and we liked it. Convenient to have a restaraunt/bar. Nice garden to sit in and enjoy the sun (if there is any). The young Ugandan guy at the reception turned out to be extremely polite and professional, though we learned he had been there for only a week. His colleague was not nearly as useful. Food in the restaurant was good. Room was spacious.

I arrived at the Muhabura without prior reservation and was charged 40 USD a night bed & breakfast in a single room with a double bed. It’s very much like a holiday camp and although there’s hot water all day, the tank is rather small so for two people, you might have to take it in turns. The shower was good but the room was a bit dirty with a lot of dead flies around.

My bed has a mosquito net which was also a bit dirty, with quite a lot of flies since the cleaner leaves the door opened during the day in between guests. There’s free wi-fi in the room which worked fine but the area is prone to power cuts. TV only had Rwandan channels. The hotel’s very quiet though and there are plenty of plugs for chargers.

Breakfast consisted of fruits, eggs, omelette (a bit soggy) and tea/coffee. Staff are friendly and helpful, with a little gift shop by reception and a fair-trade souvenir workshop next door.

The Muhabura is situated at the dimly lit end of Musanze so beware of motor bikes, sewage and potholes. Across the street is Palms Hotel which is more western in style at 60-80 USD a night with garish décor. They refused to go lower than 60 USD which sounded ridiculous considering Musanze is a second-tier city with few tourist attractions currently opened (no hiking or caves without prior permission).

Food is similar at both hotels. There are more hotel/motel/lodging options next to the Palms and Muhabura so best to check them all out before deciding if arriving without reservation. I personally didn't spot them till late in the day.

The Muhabura is perfectly adequate for one, maybe two nights’ stay.

VISAs accepted but best by cash.

I stayed there for two nights when in Rwanda for Gorilla tracking. The room 15 was spacious and clean, the back of the hotel had a nice view of the volcanoes.

Breakfast was decent, with bread, butter, jam, eggs and a plate of fruits. Dinner was good, plentiful and cheap, the plate of the day was about US$4. There was probably about 1 kg of food in the plate, you could easily share between two. They also had a really good ice cold beer called Mutzig, and very cheap as well! Definitely recommended!

I'm writing this review on behalf of my wife who stayed at Hotel Muhabura for 3 nights in mid June 2013.

Being on a fairly tight budget, Muhabura offered great service, good location and by all accounts great food for a reasonable cost.

The room was clean and comfortable, however as mentioned by previous reviewers, the shower tends to flood the bathroom and the hot water runs out fairly quickly.
Wifi connection was patchy but usable.
The staff were very friendly and helpful at all times.
The attached restaurant served a wonderful vegetable soup (among other options) and the portions were extremely generous.

This is a place to get a clean bed for max 1 night on your day before trekking if you are on a budget. Pay more if you can. Location is great and WiFi which is slow but work at times! Stay away from room # 2. Some rooms are nice and have a seating area. Even the room where Diane Fossey used to stay # 12 seems pleasant. Breakfast fruit plate and coffee acceptable but their meals were terrible and very slow, so order dinner and you will have time to have your shower and take your time, service is slow and nothing in the room seem to work properly. Electric outlets are scary and shower door and faucets dont seem to work properly. TV is decoration but on the other hand you really dont go there to watch TV. Its just a waste of space. Staff is pleasant and Noel is helpful but very motivated he will arrange all for you but it will cost you which its expected.

The good: room was clean and well-lit; location was convenient to gorilla trekking's starting point; attached restaurant's food was of standard quality; staff cleaned our muddy boots and gaiters after our hike

The bad: shower door did not close tightly resulting in mini floods after each use; bath towels were the poorest that I've used in all the hotels - shaggy and old looking; mattress was uneven

Due to rain, the road from Kigali to Ruhengeri was blocked by mudslide. On return, a section of it was flooded. I was glad I hired someone to drive us in a 4x4 and didn't have to worry about it.

We stayed here one night before trekking the Gorillas. We paid 30,000 RwF which seemed like a fare offseason price for a clean room with a TV (we didn't use) with two reasonably comfy beds with mosquito nets. The bathroom was clean and functional and the shower head was the best I've used in Rwanda and there was plenty of hot water. We ate dinner and breakfast at the attached restaurant which was adequate food (pretty good by Rwandan hotel standards). The included breakfast was was the standard: powdered coffee, juice, fruit plate, toast, omelet. The staff at the restaurant were very friendly.

Room Tip: I was in room 16 which was fine, but didn't see any other rooms. The whole place seems quiet.
