“A berber experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 12, 2012

The rooms were very "berber" or what one imagines a berber room would be like. It was a bit over the top in gimmicks like the polished granite was basin complete with embedded fossils. The bed was on a slab of concrete and it was easy to stub a toe in the dark. Having said that it was comfortable and great for one night. No doubt it is the best hotel in the area. The dining room was a good average with a bit of added colour in the form of the tea vendor and the musical entertainment which was very ethnic, but mercifully short. The pool looked nice, but we were only there for one night.

Room Tip: All the rooms appeared to be round the pool. All on the same level and very quiet.

This property was part of our Moroccan tour itinerary. We arrived early in the evening after a long drive. We were greeted by a group of Berber dancing women, and the accompanying band! It was actually very entertaining to watch them sing and dance. Since our driver did the check-in for us, I can’t comment on their service at check-in, but, the room was ready, and it was a lovely junior suite.

The décor inside the rooms is very Moroccan, and the furnishings, etc., are quite interesting and with a lot of character. Our bedroom was very comfortable, and it was a separate area, almost like a little cave; quite unique.

The bathroom is quite large, and the only thing I didn’t like is the lack of doors to the loo area and the shower.

Meals

Breakfast and dinner was included in our package. The dining room is massive, probably made to accommodate a huge amount of tourists, but during our stay, there must have been maybe only 50 or so guests, so the place felt cavernous. Food quality is pretty average, nothing to brag about, both for breakfast and dinner. Dinner is a set menu, and there are no other available choices. The breakfast buffet is fine.

Fitness Center

There is a small gym, which we used; it’s pretty basic, but if you want to exercise, basic equipment is available.

Pools and Spa

The swimming pools are probably their best feature. There is a heated, indoor pool, and it is very nice, and the outdoor pool is very pretty, but during the cold month of December, it was too cold to use the one outdoor. There is also a Spa, and the prices appeared reasonable, though I didn’t use their services.

Other Activities

The hotel seems to offer various activities, such as treks to the nearby desert on camel back, ATVs, horses, etc. We continued from here to the desert for an overnight in a Berber tent. There are two tennis courts, and putt-putt golf.

This hotel seems like it would be fun to spend a few days in, during the warmer months of the year. The staff seems friendly and eager to help.

Room Tip: We stayed in room #1, and it was well-positioned to the restaurant, and other activities, and we did...

Although it felt a bit Disney-esque, the rooms were very large and well-appointed. Had a few difficulties figuring out how the heating system worked - it was often either too hot or too cold. The architecture was attractive and the central courtyard had a pool (it was too cold to consider swimming) and replica tents and other Berber-like paraphenalia. Dinner buffet was quite good, as was breakfast. The property is outside of town, so it's not possible to walk to anything local.

The Xaluca chain is a reliable, upscale flag especially in smaller towns. Erfoud is a gateway town for trips out to the nearby dunes and many visitors base here for daytrips to the sand. There are lots of choices for lodging but we had few complaints about this hotel. It is well designed, has a nice bar and is set up for hot weather with a large pool and surrounding facilities. The restaurant served buffet style and the food was palatable. Service was generally good and uniformly friendly. The rooms were fine although one of our heaters didn't work. Manny, Moe, and Jack all came down to the room to try to repair it, alas to no avail but they made a gallant is somewhat humorous attempt to do so.

I'll bet there are equal or maybe better hotels on the "strip" leading into town but if you choose the Xaluca you probably won't be sorry you did.

Stayed as part of a small group tour with VJV. Welcomed by a troupe of musicians (very noisy). Rooms arranged in blocks to resemble a Kasbah. Room OK – decorated to look like a Berber's tent, but all mod cons – including fridge, hair dryer and two comfortable single beds which could be pushed together to make a double. Separate toilet and shower which made things easier for two people! We ate in the buffet style International restaurant which was OK with a good choice of dishes. There is nowhere nearby to walk out to, but they keep their drink prices low – a small Flag beer was 20 Dirhams and a bottle of local(ish) wine 100 Dirhams.
Breakfast buffet OK.

We stayed here as part of a private tour booked through Journey Beyond Travel, who we can highly recommend if you are interested in a customized tour of Morocco. This was probably our least favourite accommodation of our trip, as to us it had a somewhat fake, “Disneylike” feel to it.
The real downside for us was the food. Breakfast and dinner were buffets, which we are not great fans of, particularly in a hot climate. We arrived for dinner around 8pm, by which time a lot of the food had already been eaten and was not replenished, so we did not have a good dinner. Furthermore, my husband awoke the next morning with an upset stomach, which is most likely due to something he ate from the buffet.
That said, our room was clean and comfortable, and the staff very friendly. The swimming pool area was large and well maintained.
