“Fantastic safari to Lions Bluff”
Review of Vumbi Jeep Safaris

I can strongly recommend Ali and Vumbi Jeep safaris. Ali works tirelessly, and one of his drivers picked us up from Mombasa airport and drove us up to Lions Bluff in Tsavo West which was very convenient (he also re-arranged hi time for us especially, as our flight times changed at the last minute). His jeep was very comfortable, large and spacious with an opening roof for viewing. Ali is very knowledgeable about animals and birds, and also a very entertaining and considerate host - he specialises in 'private' safaris (e.g. for groups of family and friends). Lions Bluff is a very special place with a stupendous view, and we stayed for 3 nights without any particular desire for a change of scenery (see Lions Bluff reviews). Ali arranged breakfast in the bush for us with the lodge without being asked, which was particularly good. A private safari is great as you can pretty much run things your own way without fear of disagreement with other parties (as with mixed safaris) - one morning we were out for a 6 hour game drive, including the bush breakfast. Viewing highlights include excellent lions, and I also enjoyed seeing antelopes such as Eland and Oryx. We also did a day trip to Lake Jipe - without seeing another safari vehicle for the entire day - where we took a boat trip to see hippos and some birds. All excellent, if a long drive, but nevertheless interesting and game to see en route.

Vumbi means dust - which is worth mentioning as a 3 day safari is a pretty dusty experience ! Ali finally delivered us in the jeep back to the Mnarani Club at Kilifi (see reviews) which is a long journey. We took a back route for part of the way and passed through some interesting villages and countryside. Again - really great service and very considerate. Top notch.

We really enjoyed our safari with Ali from Vumbi. He is a passionate ranger and provided us with a lot of info about the animals and their beaviour. Vumbi is really a must for people willing to do safari departing from diani beach.

Vumbi provided us a brilliant Safari around Tsavo East, we loved it. We did a two day trip and wished it could have been longer. The lodge we stayed at was great and each luxury tent had its own pool. We saw lots of great animals and have all the photos to prove it.

Ali was a great guide, he was very nice and really looked after us. On the evening drive Ali had nicely chilled us some sparkling wine and took us to Voi town for some local drinks.

On our way back to our hotel Ali helped us do a bit of charity. We bought 120kg of Maze in 2kgs bags and dropped them all off in the villages. Everyone was very happy to receive the Maze and it felt like we'd done a good deed.

We hope to take another trip with Vumbi the near future.

Thanks Ali

Dave and Gem

We have spent 4 wonderful days and visited 4 parks e.g. Tsavo East, Amboseli, Tsavo West and Shimba Hills. Although due to the great distances among the parks the hours spent enrout seemed to be much, but experiencing all the wonders of nature was definetly worth the trip. Ali is an excellent guide, he does not only have very sharp eyes that enabled us to see many animals but also has an extensive knowledge of the animals, their behaviour and habitats. The choice of lodges Ali recommended was also fine. Drinking a bottle of vine together and watching the sunset was an excellent ending of the day. All in all a big thank you to you Ali. Hope to see you again maybee in a club in Hungary! ;)

We have just come back from a 4-day safari to Tsavo East, West and Amboseli. Our safari with Vumbi was very enjoyable. They are a reliable company and there were no issues at all.

The driver: very friendly, safe driving, very knowledgable about the wildlife

The vehicle: very comfortable spacious safari jeep with pop-up roof - I usually get car sick but had no issues at all in this vehicle

The itinerary:
a)from Mombassa I would recommend you to start with Tsavo East, then Amboseli, then Tsavo West. If you do the circuit the other way around (which we did - against Vumbi's recommendation), you will do lots of highway driving before starting the game drive and be a little tired. Start with the game drive entering Tsavo East through Bachuma gate.
b) I would recommed you to add the "perfect finish" to your safari. For a very resonable extra charge Vumbi offer the option of going back through Shimba Hills reserve avoiding Mombassa traffic. We did not do that and regretted it when stuck in heavy traffic in Mombassa. You also avoid quite a bit of the Nairobi-Mombassa highway full of lorries overtaking each other sometimes in scary ways.
c) You visit an authentic Masai village. Very fascinating insight into this traditional life style. Entry is free. At the end of the visit they expect you to buy a few souvenirs as a contribution to the community. We spent USD 20 each, which I think is a reasonable "entrance fee". I think you can opt out of the Masai village visit, but we enjoyed it and would recommend it.

The lodges: All lodges we stayed at were fabulous. we stayed at Amboseli Sentrim (great pool with Kilimanjaro view), Ngulia Lodge (breathtaking views and lit-up waterhole with lots of wildlife), Manyatta Camp (fabulous tent with its own mini-infinity pool with a park view).

Popping the bubbly: Vumbi trips include a free bottle of sparkling wine each evening with your game drive. The quality of the drinks were excellent (3 nights we had 2x Swartland sparkling wine and 1x excellent South African Red). We ended up having them in the lodge after the game drive because during the drive we were busy handling binoculars and cameras. That way we saved lots of money for drinks in the lodge.

Highlight: seeing cheetahs in Amboseli - our driver was very quick at spotting the cheetah viewing opportunity and thanks to him we were one of the first vehicles at the cheetah sight and got a close-up view

Overall I can recommend a safari with Vumbi and in Kenya in general. On the last day I just wanted to continue going on safari ;)
