“Lovely place for camping”
Reviewed November 19, 2011

We stayed here during the low-season and camping was 500KSh per person per night. On Friday/ Saturday it was quite noisy at times but I guess that's what happens in a popular place over the weekend. The shower facilities are very good for the budget, a log fire heats the water and the hot water doesn't run out. Toiletblock is fine for what it is, gets cleaned on regular basis.

The restaurant is nice for drinks and breakfast. Evening meals are on the expensive side but are a nice change after eating mainly ugali and sukuma wiki.

Atmosphere is good with friendly staff and owners that hang out in the restaurant and at the boat jetty and the great surroundings of the lake.

Easy access to Hell's Gate NP. We cycled from the camp to the park and it was doable. Be aware of people trying to take you on trips to the Crater Lake or other places. Make sure that it is clear what price you're paying and what you'll be getting!
Definitely recommend staying here from a camping point of view.

Room Tip: As bandas are overpriced, I would definitely recommend camping here.

A great spot for visiting Hell's Gate national park, we were really disappointed with Fisherman's camp. The staff were not particularly helpful or friendly when we wanted to hire bikes and sort out onward travel. We opted for the Bandas with their own bathroom as it was marginally more expensive than the provided tents. The Bandas were adequate but really cold and damp. There doesn't seem to be any investment in the accommodation, even though the price was more than we paid for better quality at other camps near lake's in Kenya. We both got food poisoning from the restaurant and had to miss out on Hell's Gate as we were really sick.

Stayed the nights of 15 & 16 July 2011 at Top Camp (also known as Candalabra Camp) which is part of the Fisherman's Camp complex on the south side of Lake Naivasha. It's only a 5-10 minute walk directly uphill from Fisherman's Camp beside the lake. Our Banda (basic hut) had two single beds and a verandah with an excellent elevated view of Lake Naivasha. Had a private bathroom that was in a separate building but only 5 metres from our Banda. In total we paid KES3,600 for two nights for two adults and a 5-year-old (KES900 a night per person and free for kids). Definitely a good option if you don't have a big group to share the cost of the more expensive accommodation at Fisherman's Camp, some of which costs more on weekends. Each Banda has it's own place for a campfire and we bought enough wood to last all night for KES200. The only problem we had was that the bedding wasn't quite good enough to keep everyone warm at night, so consider bringing sleeping bags or extra clothes to sleep in. It was basic accommodation but a good budget option for exploring Hell's Gate National Park (Elsa Gate 5km), Crater Lake Game Sanctuary, and other nearby attractions. Meals, a full bar, tourist activities and bike hire are available at Fisherman's Camp down at the water's edge. To get there from Nairobi take a Matatu from the River Road/Accra Road area to Naivasha (KES200 per person, around 90 minutes), and a second Matatu from Naivasha to Fisherman's Camp (KES80 per person, around 30 minutes). Check the website -- for more information.

Room Tip: Ask for a Banda with a view of Lake Naivasha

On the plus side:
- Fishermans Camp is set in a beautiful wooded area - quite stunning really
- The staff are also very friendly and helpful
- The showers in the bandas are also marvellous.
- You can hire bikes at reasonable prices

However there are a number of problems with the camp, namely:
- Over-priced lodging (despite being in low season they still insisted charging full price on the weekend - Ksh4,000 per banda!)
- Over-priced food (meals typically came in at around Ksh1,000 [£7] for food and a drink, and were OK but not worth that much)
- When we asked to hire a rowing boat they said they were all broken, despite 8 men sitting around the boating area (typical Africa!)
- The website made reference to a swimming pool but when you get there you find that it's the pool belonging to the hotel next door, and you have to pay to use it!

Wonderful spot in Kenya. Hail a minibus on the road outside to get around where you need to go. Bike hire was great and easy, and there are monkeys and hippos all around.
Restaurant had great food, and did handy lunch packs for travelling!
Staff very helpful and don't push you to take their tours like many places.

Was very quiet, just us and a few overlanders when we were there.

Wasn't cheap, but was worth it.

Lovely to be in the forest after the dust of Egypt!

Room Tip: The permanent tent was old but good

We stayed in one of the bandas at the camp for five nights. The hut is very basic and we had no hot water, but the campsite is right on the lake and very peaceful, with a diversity of birds. Hippos supposedly graze adjacent to the lake, but we did not see or hear any during our stay.

The on-site bar is very expensive and the food is average at best, but the staff are friendly. The campsite is situated only a few kilometres from Hell's Gate National Park so it's worth hiring a bike from the camp for a day trip.

Camping at Fisherman's camp used to be awesome.. it seems, however, that of late, the management really isn't up to the task anymore, which is quite sad, really. Campers are allowed to blare music late into the night.. 3 am or so, to be exact. Security guards aren't to be found at night, and the camp was actually left unguarded for a large portion of the night! When i did finally locate a guard to complain about the music, well, he was delivering beer to one of the louder groups, and surprise, surprise, seemed to be quite drunk himself!
The next morning, I tried to complain to management about the issue, but no one seemed to be in the least interested. I decided to move to the Fish Eagle Inn next door, and was pleasantly surprised by how professional they were. The staff were very helpful, and always on hand. Hot water is avaiilable throughout, and the camping experience was very peaceful without and disturbance whatsoever.
suggestion is; for those seeking a restful camping experience, DO NOT go to Fisherman's Camp.
