Sunbird Mzuzu Hotel

We were surprised to find this standard of hotel in Mzuzu. It was certainly well organised and the accommodation was quite adequate - with an aircon that worked well. The rooms need some attention - yet are comfortable and the restaurant is a little basic. Enjoyed the authentic Mzuzu coffee at breakfast and the staff were friendly and helpful. I have travelled broadly across Africa - and for a town in Northern Malawi - this is an unexpected oasis.

We stayed here for 1 night on the way to Nyika, coming from Lundazi (Zambia). Having arrived at dark in Mzuzu we decided to look for a good hotel in Mzuzu. Sunbird looked like to be among if not the best in Mzuzu.
As a matter of fact probably it is the best in the city and fairly aligned with western standars. Personell is very friendly, kind and available. They allowed me to park my fully equipped Hilux just in front of the main entrance for the night in order to have my full gasoil jerry cans under control given the fuel shortage in Malawi in those days.
The room wa a bit small, but clean and furnished with the essential.
We ate at the restaurant for dinner, very nice personnel and good meal. Somthing listed in the menu was not available, but no major missing. Breakfast very, very good with a big variety of choices, far better of many top market hotel in Europe.
The only drawback is pricing: a bit too expensive being located in Mzuzu and according to services provided. It's a general impression of mine the hich general costing of Malawi in big cities, probably determined by the huge amount of people working for NGOs, UN, FAO, and in general humanitarian organizations that caused high prices.
Anyhow, a very good and recommended choice in Mzuzu.

The hotel and grounds are beautiful and safe. The Friday night disco is a bit boring and the prostitutes at the bar are a pain but it's better than it was. The menu could do with a revamp. Best place in town if you're new to Mzuzu.

My wife and I stayed at the Sunbird Mzuzu Hotel in July, 2010. The hotel was a bit like an average Canadian hotel for room quality and amenities but the staff and hotel administrators were outstanding. The stay was wonderful because of the people. I would highly recommend this facility for work or pleasure

A very good hotel by African standards
Clean rooms, good bathrooms, decent restaurant, friendly staff.
Not a holiday place though, as it is a city hotel in a fairly uninteresting town.
No swimming pool.
I have been coming here for nearly twenty years and standards have always been good.

I have visited Malawi a number of times and generally stay at this hotel on my journey north.
The hotel is well secured and gives a genuine feeling of safety.
The rooms, for Malawi, are really very good. Perhaps basic by European standards but super delux with for Malawi. Rooms are ensuite, good water supply, air conditioned and very comfortable.
The staff are more than helpful, warm, friendly and kind hearted.
The restaurant is excellent and in my opinion do the best steak and chips in Malawi.
There is a good sized garden to stroll in and is beside the local golf club.
Overall a good place to stay with your family if you are in the area.
By Malawian standards though it is quite expensive.
I have stayed in the Sunbird Capital in Lilongwe and I would rate Sunbird Mzuz above it in every department except the rooms.
