While is Kisumu is not a major tourist destination, it is a regional hub of commerce and an interesting destination in and of itself. There are just enough transport, hotel & restaurant options to make visting a pleasure for business or leisure.
Kisumu is not a city for walking, so the dirt road access to Kiboko Bay is offset by the fact that you will need a taxi or car anyway to get to most destinations.
The accomodations are both comfortable and memorable, but the friendly and accomodating staff are the primary reason to stay at Kiboko Bay (example: daily laundry service is included, so it is OK to pack light for your visit).

Brilliant setting, nice set-up, unique environment. The rooms are very comfortable and natural (no TV), relaxing. If it rains, it is even better as you feel like you are outside (because of the tent) but not getting wet!

When I first came to Kiboko Bay in a tuk-tuk, I thought the driver must be confused - I was going to a resort and we appeared to be driving through a slum. However, once we arrived, I couldn't not have been more surprised. The resort is beautiful, and the tent accommodations are amazing - hearing the hippos graze by your doorstep early in the morning is an added bonus. It was one of the best trips I have made in Kenya. The food was delicious, although a bit expensive. All staff were welcoming and incredibly helpful. It is a bit inconvenient if you are hoping to frequent Kisumu town, because getting a tuk-tuk to come fetch you at the resort can take a while, but it's so nice to get away from the noise and chaos here in the evenings. The pool is pretty run down, but still a welcome oasis during the heat of the day.

The food, ambience and atmosphere in the restaurant are superb! We go here to eat whenever we have a special occasion to celebrate. It isn't the cheapest, but it is money well spent.

As for the pool area, it is a little tired and in need of sprucing up. Also, be careful, if you are not a guest of the hotel you will be charged for the use of sun beds - even if you have used other facilities, such as the restaurant, which is a little disappointing.

We have never stayed in the accommodation but have looked around - personally, I wouldn't pay the kind of prices they are asking. We have stayed at better and less expensive places in the hugely popular resort of Mombassa.

But, if you want good food in a good environment, you wont find better in Kisumu!

We stayed at the Kiboko Bay in February for 4 nights, while visiting friends in Kisumu. We were made to feel very welcome by the manager and all the staff - nothing was too much trouble. The tents are on a solid structure and were well sealed (from the mosquitos which unfortunately are quite plentiful by the lake at night!) and spacious, with a big, comfy bed and a large bathroom and great shower. Don't be put off by the approach road to the hotel (which is very bumpy!) as the villagers, though extremely poor, are very proud of the hotel and protective of it. This is due to the fact that the hotel supports the local village and has helped improve their quality of life. It's nice, while eating breakfast in the open-air restaurant, to watch/greet the local people as they come down to the lakeside to collect water.
The hotel offers every luxury you could ask for, including having your washing done every day for no charge - though we did give the ladies a tip for doing this.
It was quite an experience to hear a hippo eating grass on the lawns outside our tent one night and make sure you take a boat trip on the lake in the early morning (preferably using one of the boats organised by the hotel). My wife was a bit nervous about this, but we wore lifejackets and agreed that this boat trip was one of the highlights of our visit to Kenya.
If we ever visit Kisumu again, we would definitely return to Kiboko Bay hotel.

Room Tip: All the tents are the same, but there is one apartment if you don't like tents

Spend one day here with my Swedish group after a disappointing night at another hotel in town. This place made the group to be happy again and some went out with boats for a look at the hippos or just relaxing at the pool. Food excellent. Will be back,

Kiboko Bay, aptly named as Kiboko means Hippo, is a wonderful place to relax on a Sunday afternoon. We requent this lakeside resort for lunch after church with friends quite frequently and we really enjoy the setting. Recently, water hyacinth has invaded the bay and has completely blocked any view of the water. This could be really disappointing if you are planning to come for a visit soon. Normally the lakeshore is a wonderful place to relax for a meal. The salads are wonderful. When busy there can be a wait for food but you don't come here for fast food.
Lodging is a bit pricey depending on your economic status. The pool is clean and not too busy.
I would caution people from arriving or leaving after dark. Dunga can be very unsafe as you move through the bumpy road that leads to the lakeside resort. Once inside, you are very secure, just be smart.
The staff is friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Rooms are almost identical. There are only six tents so you can't choose a bad one.

Thank you very much for this encouraging review on our general service and we would also like to update visitors about security concerns after sunset. Crime is generally the consequence of unemployment in any town or city and Kisumu also has a huge population of unemployed youth. We would advise guests to Kiboko Bay to exercise caution as much as anywhere else in the heart of town where incidents are more frequent. Dunga, in the last few years has become more safer, thanks to the participation of the village dwellers in community policing and the presence of professional security personnel. We also like to bring to your notice that by maintaining good relations with the community, Kiboko Bay has always been an oasis of sanctuary when violence has wracked the central areas of Kisumu.
We thank you for your regular patronage and assure you that though your concerns are understandable, they are also valid in general.
Regards,
Nirmal Darbar.
