We only stopped here for lunch, but I feel this place is starting to lose its charm and need some definitely TLC to keep its history and prestige. The dining room where we ate was stuffy and not, and there was a TERRIBLE pianist who kept messing up songs on a very out of tune piano during the lunch hour. The buffet consisted of typical African fare, but lacked in flavor and appeal compared to other restaurants we had eaten at. Overall, it is a beautiful property to walk through with lots of history, but I recommend staying or eating somewhere else if passing through Kericho.

My wife & I have just returned from 3 weeks in Kenya. We were delighted when our driver (from west of Kisumu to Nairobi...by road because 2 internal airlines have ceased operating) told us we were staying there overnight.
I would agree that, like many other hotels in Kenya, standards are not up to European ones, but we loved the size of our room, the attentive service of the staff, and the peace & beauty of the hotel.
Because our driver made the booking for us (3 rooms for the 3 in our party), he was able to secure a discounted rate for our rooms. I need to point out that Kenya is in the grip of recession - I doubt folk will be able to improve standards until the recession is over, and tourist confidence returns.

Visiting the hotel 2 years since my last review. Ignore the rugged rooftops depicting neglect and focus on the core values you get from food, service and accomodation. you get to feel a touch of Kenya's culture from the natural wood deco and paintings along its coridors. There are cottages for those who require privacy which you are guaranteed. It has a small swimming pool tucked away from the main building and fenced off complete with a bar making it attractive for a bash/party. I especially enjoyed its masala tea and later a great sumptuous meal of whole tilapia served with ugali. there are still plumbing issues the services have greatly improved. the hotel is 3 hours 46. mins from the Masai mara. it has large suites overlooking the scenic tea plantations and breathtaking view of gardens and lsndscape. it is minutes from Taidy, a trendy midclass hangout for those that would prefer clubbing in the evening and only 3 euros by cab

We recently stayed at this hotel for a short 5 day trip to this area, for our needs it was a very nice place, basic essentials to surviving, but this is no multiple star hotel. However considering the possible alternatives which are limited in this area this suits the need for a clean bed and a shower just fine.

We checked in late and there was staff available to help us which was a good start, we got our keys to the room with the desire to take a hot shower and...plan on a little running water before it becomes hot.

The beds were comfy and they provided netting to keep the critters out (a plus) the room was as I mentioned old and in need of some updating.

The grounds were pretty and the food was prepared well for what is typically a slightly basic meal.

I would not hesitate to stay here again.

First, I rated this on an "African scale" where it's probably still one of the nicest hotels around, elsewhere in the world you'd run from it. Yes, the fixtures are ancient, the hot water is spotty, the beds are hard, the pillows are harder, and the food is barely edible My wife loved basking in the faded charm of it all. Me, not so much. The grounds are nice and there is secure parking and a basically friendly staff.

...although we were expecting that. We had Suite 11 which was massive, but the bed and pillows were very tired. The grounds are stunning and we found it really interesting to walk around (almost like going back in time). Good to see the place because of its history, but possibly not a place to stay if you are looking for any luxury. The place was clean, however, and the staff were very friendly. Good for a night.

I stayed here last year after winning a competition to visit the tea plantations. Because of this, I expected a nice hotel to represent the company that sent me, this was not the case. Although the grounds and the outside of the building are absolutely stunning, nothing has been done to the hotel since it was built. Paint is cracking off, wall paper is peeling, the pool is slimey and green, the furniture in the room was falling apart, we had to use a bucket to flush the toilet and the bedsheets were covered in stains which resembled blood! This said, the food was good considering, as were the staff who couldn't do enough to help. Perhaps a nice place for the locals to hang out but needs some updating.
