We visited the place a few weeks before the "Timkat" or Ethiopian Epithamy took place and the pond was being filled with water. Great piece of architecture and the surrounding park invites you to hang out and relax. This was one of the highlights in Gondar and there are considerable less visitors here as compared to the castle. So you'll have the place for yourself if you are lucky.

I found this place more interesting than the castles or church in Gondar. It's definitely on muy bucket list to go back during Timket, but the water is probably pretty gross for that.....

This is a great place and there seems to be very little tourist here.
We got a taxi to the place which was very cheap. Our ticket was the same as the one to visit the main place complex in the town.
We were the only people here and the seating was still up from the end of christmas celebrations.
Well worth it, just to see the way the trees have grown into the stone work around the water.

When we went to Fasiladas' Bath, we were the only ones there (and the pools were full because it was 2 days before the giant Timket celebration). It was so quiet and peaceful. The nice thing is that it's free with your ticket into the Royal Enclosure so what a deal it was! Also, we managed to get out before all of the tour buses and yuppies with their tour guides and got to just sit by the pools and enjoy the birds chirping and the peaceful practice of not being asked for money for an hour lol. DO NOT miss this place (especially if you get a ticket for the castles).

We visited and got a guide and were VERY happy we did, otherwise the bath/ pool would have been far less interesting...

Once a year they fill the pool for a festival in Mid-Jan... so unless you are there around then don't expect water in it and don't expect to be able to cool down in it.

We got our guide by 1st visiting the castle and arranging the guide there for the 3 sites (castle, bath & church)

We had to negotiate with an "association representative" to be able to get a guide for the posted price... a little odd... but the guide we got was well worth it. So much so that I am happy to recommend him. His name was Haile and you can contact him at ethio_guide at yahoo dot com
or his phone number is 0918817887
Haile's English was near perfect and there was not a question that he could not answer.

The posted price for all 3 sites for his services is 200 Birr, but I bet if you contacted him and asked him to pick you up from the hotel you would only have to pay him a touch more

We used him for not only the Castle complex, but the main Church and the Fasiladas Bath. All which are VERY much worth a visit. Haile (our guide) also organized a tuk-tuk to drive us between the sites and wait for us when we were done. This cost us 100 Birr and was well worth it.

We liked him so much that we treated him to a coffee at the end of our visit - which the tuk-tuk then took us to.
