I am an elderly, experienced, often solo world traveler who does much research on my travel destinations, and who is picky - but not unreasonably so. Interested in value but not willing to sacrifice good quality for it - I stay in medium to high end places, no longer a backpacker. First time in Ethiopia.
Researching the hotels of Ethiopia's North on Tripadvisor, I was amazed to find, for the same hotel, so many "great"s and so many "bad"s. Strange. I found on staying in these hotels that they were great - problem free. The "bad"s were, sadly, cranks (all hotels have them) and spoilers (fake bad reviews put into tripadvisor for some kind of gain...)
TAYE HOTEL
I called a day prior to arrival in Gonder and made a reservation for a room with a balcony and view (A MUST in this hotel and town). On arrival I was given a room with a balcony and view. The view is really nice - out over the town and mountains beyond, with a glimpse of the Royal Enclosure. There are standard rooms and there are larger delux rooms. Neither are expensive, so if you want a bigger room ask for a delux. At night there were no barking dogs, and the inevitable early morning islamic call to prayer was distant. The hotel is perfectly located in the town but not in a noisy location, overlooking a hundred meters away the piazza of the town center, and a hundred meters to the Royal enclosure exit (entrance around the other side). One can hire the hotel's van for a tour of the other four sites in the town (the baths, the hilltop queen's palace, the church on the hill, and the view from another hilltop hotel) - an afternoon's easy excursion. I booked a half day tour to kossoye about 30 kms into the mountains with a guide at the Royal Enclosure to see the baboons (which i saw) for 1000 Brr - it was well run and a good value BECAUSE I did see the baboons, and the scenery was beautiful. The folks at the hotel desk are very sweet, and if you have any more intricate questions/arrangements, the manager, Mr Haillu is almost always on duty (or can be called) and he will help with anything - very enthusiastic, caring, and very competent, with perfect English The lobby is delightful and spacious with a bar area. People seemed to be using wifi in it. The dining room for breakfast lunch and dinner (all delicious) is large and cheerful and very upscale. The breakfast buffet was a delight and the lunches and dinners were great. I was very satisfied with this place and recomment it. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the Taye hotel - what a delight.

Room Tip: Get a confirmation with a name for your reservation of a room with a view and balcony.

We stayed at Taye Hotel two nights. The first night was Ethiopian Christmas Eve, and the loud chanting all night long from the nearby churches made sleep impossible. Compensation came the next morning, in the form of wonderful singing, drumming, and dancing by crowds of joyful young celebrants dressed in their finest apparel.

Aside from the noise problem, over which the hotel had no control, the Taye was an excellent choice, with a very good restaurant, Wi-Fi in the lobby, and very friendly and helpful staff. The only caution I would offer is that the hotel’s mattresses are extremely firm.

This hotel is in the best location possible in Gondar. It's a few minutes walk from the Royal Enclosure, a couple of minutes up the hill from the market, close to bars and places to eat. The hotel is very nice and clean, but I found that it's made for the upscale traveller, which is not really our thing but I think it's what they're going for. The food is American style, the amenities are top end, it doesn't feel like Ethiopia.....but a lot of people probably like this lol. A couple of negatives, the wifi was very spotty and only came in on the back steps which was mildly annoying but not a big deal of course. Also, the beds were VERY uncomfortable which we were used to, but not for that kind of money.

Lovely comfortable bed, nice clean bathroom. Good location close to the castles. Good views over the town from the terraces, but apart from the castles which are absolutely fantastic and must not be missed, this town doesn't have a plethora of tourist attractions / shops in the centre which you can walk to. Food is good, friendly helpful staff.
