“Great Location and Friendly Staff”

By North American standards, this hotel is probably a generous 3 stars... But for Gondar could not ask for much better. Flew to Gondar from Lalibella and shuttle to hotel. Was a bit worn from accumulated travel fatigue but host was excellent and very accommodating... Check in was easy, room was ok, and he made us coffee and tea. Chatted a bit and I was then off to visit some sites. Very convenient location to visiting Gondar Castle complex which is a 5 minute walk from there. Also a short walk to Gondar town central... Restaurant food was good. Owner arranged a shuttle truck/bus to pick me up at hotel next day for a 2.5 hour drive to Bahir Dar for a very reasonable price...

If I had known I have to wait 25 minutes for hot water, dry with a tattered towel, and sleep behind a single pane of glass with a thin curtain I would have chosen something different.

I chose the lodge because of it's high ratings. But personally I can't rate it higher than average because of the 25 min wait for hot water. The well worn towel, single pane window, and cloth serving as a a poor excuse for a curtain pulled my rating toward a 2. That's why I say it's overrated.

I paid $45 in the low season. I looked at rooms at the Goha hotel. They were $39 at the time and much bigger and quieter. I wandered into the Fasil and it seem quieter and more spacious. That's why I say it's overpriced.

That was my experience....

Just Stayed there for 2 nights - Great place, Siom the manager will make your stay in Gonder even better with advise on where to go and where to eat.
The breakfast is very good and the view from the upper terrace is beautiful.

I stayed at the Lodge du Chateau before and after my Semien trek, and I found it very enjoyable. Great location (right next to the castle) and reasonably priced. Rooms are clean and modern, showers have piping hot water, the breakfast is very good, the staff is friendly, and there is decently fast (for Africa) free wireless internet. I especially enjoyed the courtyard, containing a birdbath around which I saw no less than 2 dozen species of wild birds, including colorful lovebirds and weavers. Seyoum (the owner) arranges well-organized treks to the Semiens and gives helpful tips for exploring Gondar as well. I would not hesitate to recommend this place and would stay there again if I went back.

We stayed at Lodge as the first stop on a two week trip all over Ethiopia. It was by far the nicest place we stayed. The rooms and beds are clean and comfortable. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. The location in Gondar is perfect (close to the castles, great restaurants, and near the main mini-bus line). Other hotels in Gondar may be more grand, but Lodge du Chateau has the quality and atmosphere that the other lack.

The Lodge helped us organize a one day hiking trip in the mountains and offers horseback riding tours of the country side. Another great service for backpackers, there is a dorm room style room in the basement that is perfect for groups or lower budget travelers who still want a nice place to sleep.

Enjoy Gondar!

Couldn't fault the friendliness & helpfulness of the Lodge staff, really made you feel like you were amongst true friends. The rooms are spacious & overlook a cosy garden, attracting all sorts of colouful birds, the terrace has nice views and the free wi-fi was useful :-).. the location is great also, castle entrance a 5minute walk one way & the town centre a 5minute walk the other, nothing seemed too much trouble. Would definately stay again..

I spent 2 nights here at the end of a teaching trip in Ethiopia. The manager is very friendly and helpful, and he gave me good suggestions on where to eat etc. Although they offer guides etc there was no pressure to take a tour, which was nice since at the end of my trip i was guided out.
The garden is lovely and the breakfast patio is also very nice. The rooms are quaint and there is wifi.
The only criticism is that is can be a bit noisy with all the rooms around a small garden courtyard and the only wondow opening onto that courtyard, which means if a guest is smoking or baby crying it will come into your room.
As a base for exploring the sites of Gonder (which are wonderful) it is perfect, located just behind the royal enclosure, a 5 minute walk to the piazza area.

Recommended. Take ear plugs.
