The garden bungalow we had at Oasis de Kiamu for a three night stay was spotlessly clean, decent in size, modern and comfortable. Plumbing and appliances all worked perfectly. Some noise can be heard from adjoining rooms (there are 4 rooms in each of the garden bungalow blocks) but thankfully our neighbours were generally quiet. The 1500 franc buffet breakfast was very underwhelming so after the first morning we drove to the shops to buy supplies instead for a simple breakfast. Dinner was between 7-10 thousand francs for two people having two courses each plus drinks. Not cheap, but not outrageous ly expensive as the quality of the food was quite good - once one summons up one's schoolboy French and a bit of guesswork to interpret the French-only menu and place an order with the at times somewhat unhelpful French-only speaking staff. In hindsight, booking one of the rooms with cooking facilities would have been good value. An 8 week evening college French 101 course before going would have been useful too.
To call the tiny patch of sand across the road a "beach" is a bit of wishful marketing-department thinking, but it's only a 10-15 minute drive to famous Leungoni Beach in one direction and about the same to Chateaubriand Beach in the opposite direction. Better still, drive 45 minutes to the north end of the Island to visit Jokin cliffs and Baie de Jinek for incredible snorkelling. A hire car is essential on Lifou, as is a good map as none of the highlights are signposted, nor is there any tourist infrastructure to speak of....which adds to the appeal of the place and will see me going back again some day I hope.
