“Fantastic tree house”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 6, 2013 via mobile

We stayed 2 nights in that wonderful tree house!

Situation:
The view is great ! You can spend the evening watching yasur fireworks from there!
The site is 50m from the entrance to mt yasur, at the base (so the climb is the shortest possible).

Access:
Thomas sent someone to pick us up at Whitegrass airport, 2 hours of scenic drive (including the ash plain).
A good pick up 4wd truck, a cautious and friendly driver, good reggae music all along, 2500 vatu per person, honest deal.

Equipment :
Bed was comfy (remember we are not in a hotel in Vegas but in the jungle, do not imagine the best bed ever).
Mosquito nets over the bed in a good state.
There is "real" toilets (understand the seat and the flush). Really nice.
The shower was not working when we were there so we had to wash the old way with a bucket of water.
However, once they will fix it, the shower hut seemed very well equiped.
Very important, Thomas owns a little shop too, where you can buy plenty of bottled-water (unless you want to try drinking tap water...your choice your health)

Food:
Thomas wife cooked wonderful local meals for reasonable price. Obviously you can't choose your meal because we are in the middle of nowhere, but it's very tasty, with crops from the garden and very very generous portions.

Others:
Thomas and Robert are very nice and friendly as their families. We enjoyed so much talking with them. Be aware that Thomas does not have internet access everyday (he must go to Lenakel, on the other side of the island), thus you should contact him several days before you arrive, no last minute questions.

We stayed in a treehouse, built at the top of a banyan tree, with a beautiful view of the smoking volcano from the treehouse patio. That should be enough of a reason to stay at this place. This is the closest guesthouse to the volcano - it is right in front of the main gate you enter (and pay your entrance fee at) at the base of the volcano. The amenities/utilities here are comparable to a regular campground - toilets, showers, that's about it.

The owners are a super friendly family that try to accommodate all your needs (as long as you're not too demanding). They cooked all our food while we were there (you never know what they're going to make but it's always hearty, tasty and very filling), and also took us up the volcano. The volcano itself was an amazing experience especially since we were there on a high-activity day. Throughout the night, you can hear and feel the volcano errupting from the treehouse.

My only advice would be to make sure you go to the bathroom before you head up the 30-odd steep wooden steps to the treehouse for the night...and also make sure you keep all food tightly packed away if you don't want the rats to eat them (yes, there are rats in the treehouse, but they don't bother you...just your food).

We took an afternoon flight back to Port Villa, so in the morning of our departure, we had Thomas drop us off at White Grass Resort. It's about a 2 hour drive from the volcano side of the island (close to Yasur Campgrounds) to the airport side (close to White Grass). We hung out there for a few hours before our flight - had lunch and went swimming. A good option if you want to stay at Yasur Campground, but also want some time to swim/snorkel/hang out by the ocean.

Room Tip: Definitely try the treehouse.

We stayed at the campground/bungalows run by Robert & Thomas based on friends' recommendations. Robert, the owner, organized a pickup at the airport for us, which charged the usual price (2500vt pp for tourists). We love the campground's proximity to the volcano (which is totally stunning!) and the lack of amenities :) This is no resort, which is why we loved it. Accommodation is basic, but clean. The shower didn't work when we were there, and running water for the bucket wasn't always available either, but the nice toilet was a plus. Breakfasts were simple and filling, dinner for 1000vt/person very good.
The best part was our return trip to the west coast of Tanna. We convinced Thomas, Robert's brother, to take us on a 2 day trek through the mountain's jungle with a stay in a friend's village house in Yakel. Despite the contant rains we loved the experience and Thomas's willingness to answer all our questions.
Go there before too many people find out.
All the best to Robert and Thomas in their enterprise.

Our stay here was our favourite experience in Vanuatu. We slept in a Bungalow and the tree house. Thomas and his family went out of their way to look after us and helped us see a glimpse of the real Vanuatu. The location is fantastic because there is a constant view of the volcano and we got to enjoy it all day compared with the people who drive 1.5 hours from resorts to see it for just a couple of hours. Our kids had a great time playing with the local kids, learned a few things about each other and made some new friends. Thomas and his brother were in the process of completing a second tree house and a larger bungalow to sleep six people; I'll post some photos. Ask for our guide, Koety; he's a great guy.

Summary of positives/issues
POSITIVES:
- great location, you can see and hear the volcano constantly errupting, especially at night
- friendly hotel staff

ISSUES:
- rats in the treehouse
- if the water supply is not working there is no shower / toilet.

We spent three days/two nights in this bed&breakfast at the entry to the volcano Yazur. The evening that we arrived we first stopped at the volcano rim and saw one of the most spectacular natural wonders in our entire life: the errupting lava less than 100m from where you stand is purely impressive!!! we then continued to the hotel where the hotel owner told us the water supply was cut but the problem would be solved 'tomorrow morning'. Until then we should use the communal hole as toilet - shower unfortunately didnt exist until the next morning. We had a good dinner in the hotel and then climbed up the stairs to the treehouse. We woke up during the night, disturbed by some rats who had chewed their way through our rucksack to get to a closed back of nuts. When commenting this the next morning to the hotel staff we were only told "oh yes, there are a lot of rats living in that tree - maybe we should buy some poison tomorrow". I wish they had had that idea BEFORE we arrived. Next day we moved down to one of the bungalows which were ok. In the morning we did a tour to Imle, a close-by village to see some traditional dances (1000 vatu pp) which was very much worth it. In the afternoon we went to Port Resolucion (1000 vatu pp per one way by car), a charming little village with two stunning beaches (white sand & black sand) and a very yummy restaurant (watchout: you might have to pay if you want to access the beach. Clarify upfront with the owner who is usually close by). We then returned and did another 45 min. walk up the volcano (if you go the second time it only cost half the entry price of 3350 vatu, ie 1675 pp, no guide needed, just follow the road). Coming home in the night the we had a nice dinner but unfortunately still no shower & toilet. The night in the bungalow was much quieter, without chewing guest.

All in all, a stunning location but disappointing value for NZ$50 / AUS$40 per night. We usually stay in our travels in rather cheap places but comparing with other locations (and similar sanitary institutions) this hotel falls flat on Price-Value, despite its friendly staff.

When going to Tanna, especially the East Coast, make sure you have enough cash with as everything costs $$ ( approx costs per person: lunch 700, dinner 1000, short car-ride 500, longer rides 1000, cultural performance 1000, guide 500-1000). Also, bring sufficient water if you go to more remote areas.

We have been travelling quite a lot around the world, and this will remain one of our best souvenirs in Vanuatu.

The place is just great, you are just at the entrance of the vulcano. You rest and eat in front of the volcano.
The Thomas' family has been so nice with us. Excellent meals were prepared by Janet. Noe, our 3 year old boy, played much with the family's children. Daniel.

We spent 3 days there, and could have spent more. We went to the vulcano at dawn and sunset with the help of Daniel. Enjoy the 45mn walk. We also walk to the sea (2h walk to Cook's bay) with an empty beach.

Do not expect a 5 star equipment as it is quite basic. Living at the bottom of the volcano is not an easy life. But you will remember these few days all your life.

Wish you all the best to Thomas and his family.

This place is an amazing family owned campground situated right at the entrance to the stunning Yasur volcano. Accomodation in bugalows, tree house, even in the camp sites is great, views to the smoking volcano are spectacular, local food is soo tasty and the staff (family) just amazing. If you also compare prices with other bungalows, than the decision, where to stay while visiting lovely Tanna island, is obvious!
We spent 3 nights here, climb the volcano 3 times and enjoyed every minute of our stay here! Ask Thomas or Robert about other activities such as ashboarding, horse riding, village visiting, bike hire, snorkelling or hiking, they will provide you an excellent service!
Not only for backpackers is this place an excellent choice!
