“Unspoilt Tropical Hideaway”
Reviewed July 14, 2014

Tanna is a beautiful unspoilt tropical island, and Tanna Lodge is an excellent place to stay on Tanna. There are only 15 or so rooms, meaning that you don't feel crowded, and it is set on its own bay with a beach which is both sandy and rocky. When we were there the sea was too rough for swimming.
The rooms are comfortable, though only the top-rate ones have a fridge. Despite being in a verdant surrounding we were hardly bothered by mosquitoes at all.
The food in the restaurant is fairly simple but excellently cooked. Dinner always has at least thee choices of main, at a pretty fair price.
The main plus for the resort are the local activities. All of the ones that we tried were run by the resort, and so they were able to tailor them to suit you. We tried a couple of quad bike tours, and the Tanna must - a trip to Mount Yasur, an active volcano. The free wi-fi in the bar area was a plus as well.
Very friendly service, and a nice quiet location. What more can you ask for?

Tanna Lodge really showed its colours recently when ourselves and several other guest parties were left stranded on Tanna Island for two nights due to an unseasonal storm. Hugh and Stella rose to the occasion in a big way, somehow re-accommodating all guests despite nearly full occupancy, facilitating alternate travel arrangements, and even providing complimentary refreshments and entertainment. Sure there are quirks to the place. It's these that helped to create a fantastically memorable experience on our Vanuatu family holiday.

I had a massive room with a view of the beach, although not beachfront, it still worked for me. The configuration of two big beds in my room was a little odd but would work for two people sharing the villa. Relaxation was a part of my stay along with tours to Black Magic Village and Mt Yasur (fireworks anyone) in a four wheel drive vehicle; and hikes to Black Sand Beach and the market day in town. Loved the food and the company and huge thanks to Hugh, Isabelle and Stella for making my stay such a joy.

Room Tip: Try and get a room right on the beach and only if you don't mind the sound of the sea.

The Beachfront Fure was an experience. Large rooms, right on the beach, outdoor shower. Small resort and the tours on offer filled the days. Tanna Islands roads are an experience in themselves, but the quad bikes tackle them comfortably. The Volcano, waterfall and village tours are well done. One suggestion would be for the bar to stock Tonic or a Soda water, as gin does not go well without it. Very laid back atmosphere, with plenty to do during the days.

Room Tip: The waves on the beach are very loud. If you are a light sleeper arrange a Fure further back.

We spent 3 nights at Tanna Lodge for our honeymoon and were pleasantly surprised upon our arrival. The entire resort was beautifully constructed to blend in with the local environs and the gardens were stunning and complemented the villas. We also loved the outdoor showers that were very private as well as inviting. The location was fantastic with the sound of the sea in the background. The villa was clean, the chef was fantastic and the staff very friendly and accommodating. They also ran tours from the lodge on the quad bikes to the waterfalls and this was great fun and the local village kids were full of laughs.
We would like to thank Hugh and all the staff for making our honeymoon not only very enjoyable but also very relaxing
Cheers
Matt & Dani Leonard

Room Tip: We can say we enjoyed villa 8

We had a beachside bungalow for 2 nights. Loved the outdoor shower and was amazed that we had hot water... but we did. Fell asleep to the sounds of the crashing waves. Saw an amazing sunset. The food was good and the staff were really friendly. We went on the volcano tour that was a 90 minute bumpy ride away and the driver did a great job navigating the terrible roads. The Volcano was good to see up close. The simplicity of this place meant that we enjoyed a blissful few days chilling out....

We stayed two nights so that we could visit Yakel which is very close-by. Having stayed at basic bungalow accommodation near Mt Yasur the night before arriving, the relative luxury of this place (with a bar and hot showers) was initially very welcoming when compared to the more traditional accommodation options elsewhere on Tanna.
We were kindly upgraded to a beach front villa which was spacious and looked inviting. However, we soon discovered that rats had infested the place and we awoke several times to a rat (or rats) scampering across the room. A request to the owner (you will recognise him easily when you arrive as he is usually near the bar in nothing more than board shorts) for a rat trap only elicited a comment that the bush is full of rats, that they bait for them every few weeks and not to worry as the rats only eat fruit.
We put the first night down to bad luck, but on the second night the rats were more daring and we awoke twice to a rat running across the bed, needless to say we didn't sleep after that and couldn't wait to leave.
The food in the restaurant was average but filing, with fruit, toast, jam, tea and coffee for breakfast and a selection of 6 or 7 dishes for lunch and dinner. On the second evening, there was a buffet of steamed fish and vegies cooked the local way over coals which was a nice idea, but it became clear that the owners were more focussed on their own family than their paying guests when the dessert was only offered to their friends and family and removed from the buffet immediately after that.
The general attitude of the owner was a shame, as the local employees were all very friendly and tried their best to please.
The highlight and only reason that I can see to stay here, is for the good, fun and informative tour of Yakel on quad bikes that Ned runs.
