“Agnes Lodge, Munda, Western Province Solomon Islands”
Reviewed December 30, 2013

Room prices were far too expansive - a rip off in fact as are the food prices in the restaurant.

The restaurant service can be appallingly slow and I had to wait over an hour for dinner on two occasions. Other guests had similar complains and several long term guests (staying over 3 months) were turfed out of their rooms for short stay incoming guests.

The place is run down with rusty tin shacks in evidence within the hotel confines. The staff burn rubbish in some incinerators within the hotel grounds and so the stench of burning plastic bags often fills the air. When it rains the stench of sewage can be over powering.

The electricity supply in Munda is unreliable, as is the hotel generator, a wheezing asthmatic old relic which makes a helluva din which can be heard all over the hotel and which is an effective sleep preventer. The water supply can be problematic and other guests told me that this was an on going problem which hasn't been fixed for years

Mosquitos in the rooms are a problem and on complaining I as told to "go and buy some Mosquito spray from the hotel shop"

The staff are friendly but hopelessly inefficient and badly led and managed.

The place needs rebuilding and a fresh approach to management and customer care installed.

The location is idyllic, however, and the islanders are generally easy going and friendly. There is nothing at all in the town, except that there is a new cafe called the Leaf House cafe which has superb food with prompt service at realistic and reasonable prices.

Room Tip: Dont take any crap from the management. If there is something not right, insist on it being put righ...

Cost of living and doing business in the Solomon Islands is indeed high. And this goes for hotels all around. But once out of Honiara, the cost escalates exponentially for all services. Hotel rooms, food, boat rides, car rentals...... Also in Munda there is only one reasonably sized hotel and this is the Agnes Lodge, right at the wharf and around 500 meters from the airstrip. Room rates at S$700 per night going up to S$1100 during peak time is truly outrageous. And their car rental rates are also quite high. Enough to drive even the moneyed tourist away. How are we going to develop tourism in this part of the world with these prices. The bar of course is good and one can sit and have beers by the sea side and watch the beautiful sun set. Food is decent. But to have a wholesome package it has to be properly priced and this will bring in numbers. We settled for a less pricey Munda guest house and cooked our food while spending the good three days around Munda.

Room Tip: We did not stay and therefore cannot comment on the rooms. Too expensive.

The rooms are one step up from a backpackers, but when there is only one place to stay, beggars can't be choosers. The location next to the local market is handy- especially if you like to eat the biggest oysters ever straight off the shell.

The advertised tours are just that advertised tours. It took us half a day to book one of the only two (of six) available. I guess tourism takes time in the Sollies.

The food here was good and apparently they farm some pigs somewhere which makes for a nice change to the usual seafood affair available in the islands.

Not what I hoped for

Agnes Lodge is ok. Not more than that. Location is convenient. The whole property is a bit outdated and needs proper maintenance. It is the only accommodation in Munda and they seem to know that you have no other options. Staff (maybe a 25-35 when I was there, only 8 guests) makes a somewhat uninspired impression on me. Food is ok.
The place is overpriced and they seem to rip you off where they can. Or they simply can’t count or lack some sensitivity towards travellers. Room SI 1320 instead of 880 SI Dollar. Out of 6 bills a had to pay, 3 were not correct. Food and drinks are expensive. They said two times they had only one type of room available. Of course not the cheapest ones. When I stayed here there were only 4 to 8 guests. So obviously plenty of cheaper rooms available. Internet the same (it is not free and very expensive) Only 100 SI Dollar and 250 SI Dollar; 25 and 50 SI Dollar were ‘sold out’.
This place can do much better and be a frontrunner in making Munda a gateway for sustainable ecotourism.

The rooms were tired but were clean and the staff were friendly. Our trip coincided with breakdown of the town generator which meant no hot water and very occasional running water in our room. The noisy backup generator was unreliable, close to our rooms and ran all night, making sleep difficult. The food was very expensive and invariably overcooked. All 'services' were used as a chance to charge extra. To make matters worse, the dive boat was out of action and the small fishing boats that were used to ferry us to dive sites had no ladders - surely it's not too difficult to rig something up from pieces of timber, as is done at other Solomons sites. One of our group broke ribs when caught by the gunwale on a rising wave.

My husband and I were here for a few days for a work trip. They had a full house, so the only room left was the "Orchid Suite," which was their nicest room. This was actually a two bedroom suite with a nice big bathroom (with hot water) and a separate living room. The air conditioner came in handy to help sustain some of the humidity at night and made it easier to sleep. The room was very clean and we were happy to see screens on the windows. The staff were all very nice and helpful. The food from their restaurant was very good and reasonably priced. Having a dive shop on the premises made it easy. The grounds are well maintained as was the room. If you must travel to Munda, Agnes Lodge is a great place to stay. If you are traveling with your family or with another couple, the Orchid Suite may be something to consider due to the space it provides.

Room Tip: I heard that some rooms don't have A/C, but I can't personally vouch for that. The Orchid su...

I spent 8 nights at Agnes Lodge, the first room I was to occupy with a friend was so small that we had to shift our bags to move around in it. The furnishings were old and falling apart and there was mold in our room. The food was a bit expensive, often when eating with our group of 22 the first to recive their food finished eating before the last were even served. The food was OK but not good enough for the prices charged. Diving with Dive Munda was very good, it is run by Jen and Graham. Graham is a clone of Basil Faulty. The dive master I had on most of my dives was very attentive, knowledgable and great to dive with.

Room Tip: upgrade your room to atleast a studio
