Tongan Beach Resort

We have been home a week and I am still hearing the tinkling of the coral as the waves gently pushed it up and down the beach (I am also still wishing I was back sprawled on the white sandy beach). The Tongan Beach Resort is one of the most relaxing and beautiful locations I have been to and our time there was blissful. It is situated quite remotely and we felt instantly stress-free on arrival. The pace of things was lovely and slow, yet our 3 children had a fun-filled time availing themselves of all on offer. The abundant flora and fauna were a highlight. From the little piggies that sneaked around the fence on occasion, to the cute geckos, to the colourful and plentiful fish, and the sometimes chatty rooster, chickens and chicks (foam airplugs put paid to unwanted noise if you fancy a sleep-in). The frangipani perfume was divine, and our spacious rooms were dressed with fragrant bouquets on arrival, a wonderful detail. The interconnecting rooms were so useful, giving us proximity to our children, but also space and privacy when needed. The rooms look straight out onto the beach, so lovely to have a cup of tea in the morning while feasting your eyes. The layout of the resort meant our children had alot of autonomy, and we were so grateful for the amazing staff, who I cannot thank enough. Their thoughtful attention to our children meant we could relax without worrying when they went off exploring. Nothing was too much trouble, everyone was so friendly and helpful, and it really made our stay extra special. My daughter even got her hair braided, and we were able to have a beautiful meal watching the sunset at Mangoes restaurant in town, thanks to their very inexpensive babysitting service. The food was simple, fresh and delicious, and we were impressed by availability given the remote location. I would also highly recommend a massage from Anna, who is possessed of truly magic fingers. The owners even arranged a fab haircut for my partner who had run out of time before we left home!
Some sailing should definitely be on your agenda as the scenery is nothing short of stunning. We snorkeled off deserted beaches and looked at the amazing Swallow's cave. On days that we lazed around the resort, the snorkelling straight off the dock was fantastic, and the kayaks and the pool got plenty of use. Our children fished off the dock with the staff and the owners children, and I can't thank Shane and Helen for being such incredible hosts. They really value their piece of paradise and are genuinely chuffed to be able to share it with others. Lucky us!!!

We stayed for 10 days and overall we had a great time while staying in Vava'u and the Tongan Beach Resort was a great location for meeting excursion boats at the jetty and going off in the Kayaks. Unfortunately the room itself had a lot to be desired at $399 TOP per night (without food) I expected more. Room was stuffy and the ceiling fan sounded like a chinook coming in to land. The mosquito netting had gaping holes and the place was crawling with all kinds of bugs and mosquitos as well as some giant cockroaches (this is to be expected in the tropics but if the netting was maintained it would help). The beach resort is also home to many pigs, chickens and dogs... this is great entertainment for children but not so great when you are woken up every morning at 5am by a demented clucking hen and a rampant hog, then have to remove pig s*&t from outside of your room.

The bed was made up every day but I don't think the lamps or under the bed had ever been dusted. Also the bed in number 1 is not a double but two singles pushed together which was far from comfortable with hard ridges and springs. We had cold running water for the first 4 days, boiling hot dripping water for the next 4 and almost no water at all for the last 2 days. I understand that the island was short on water so we only complained about this twice and then gave up and just got on with it.

For us, the worst thing was an adjoining door in between Fale's so for the first 4 nights it was like sleeping with the Brady Bunch, we could hear everything going on next door and felt the need to whisper in our own room. Thankfully the next door fale was empty for the last few days so we had some privacy. We also had no key on arrival and several days in found out we were missing a welcome pack which would have had some useful information at the start of our trip!

Most of the staff were very friendly and helpful, particularly Moa, Koleti and Tupe (sorry about my spelling!) which is just as well since the manager Doug appeared to have very little interest in what was going on. He did the airport runs (for a fee) and dropped us into town once at no charge which was handy. However he never asked how we were enjoying our room or our stay at the resort and was very hard to engage in conversation. Just a complete lack of interest for someone who is supposedly the manager.

The food was not cheap, the same small menu every day and of very average quality. I understand that ingredients are not easy to come by but exchanging mash potato with rice every other day is pretty lazy. Having said this, we didn't find anywhere else on the island that served good food, Mangoes was the same, Bellavista was ok and the Reef Resort had a good reputation but was always fully booked. I didn't come to Tonga to eat five star cuisine but most of those meals I could have prepared better myself!

The Tongan Beach Resort has so much potential and the friendly staff at the bar really make it a great place to stay and help to give you the added cultural experience. Unfortunately it is let down by the management and the food.

Room Tip: Do not choose Fale 1 or 2 if you value privacy. I understand that some of the rooms have air conditi...

We stayed 6 nights at the Tongan Beach Resort. Its a $20 taxi ride one way from Neiafu, so once you are there it's a good idea to stay rather than venture into Neiafu too often. The rooms are a good size and have king size beds and a couch, with outdoor furniture on the little porch out front. Only complaint was the shower. Our shower door fell off its hinges (hinges broke) on night 3 and we remained without a door for the rest of our stay. Fortunately the water pressure was poor, also the hot water wasn't so hot.
Food in the restaurant was good and tasty but not particularly cheap. Once you are there you are committed to eating 3 meals a day there, and while there is good variety we felt there was a lack of really simple things like cheese and crackers, a plain bowl of cereal, etc. But overall we were pleased with the food.
Location for activities is perfect with a jetty out front we were whisked away by boat for our diving trip, fishing trip, and whale watching trip, and safely dropped back to the jetty at the end of the day. They also have a powerboat which you can hire with guide/driver and we had 3 great snorkels at great spots on our last morning. The snorkeling off the beach is good considering the proximity to civilisation.
The staff were super friendly and nothing was too much trouble.
Apart from being an expensive taxi to and from Neiafu the location is very good. Not quite the remote tropical island with white sandy beach but not far off! We were very pleased to be there especially after our MA 60 flight.

We had an absolutely wonderful time at the Tongan Beach Resort. The staff, especially Tupe and Kalita, were very helpful, and treated us like family. The perfect place to base your whale watching trip. The food and service are very good, and the mai tais are excellent. We will return to the Tongan Beach Resort.

Great staff and friendly owners. I wish I could live there. Each morning was a dream. The little piglets behind the resort on someones property were so cute, as well as the chickens and their chicks that would occasionally come through. The view out over the ocean is never going to leave my thoughts. Food was delicious, and the mixed drinks kept us laughing and honestly, I don't remember ever thinking about work while being there. Get in some whale outings while there...AWESOME! Thanks Karen!

Room Tip: I think all the rooms are the same on the part where we were...I think there were some fales that we...

We spent 5 nights at the Tongan Beach Resort , on Vava'u, and had a great time. Both the staff and other stayers were helpful and friendly. The room was spacious and had a king size bed and sea view. There was a great restaurant on site (if a little expensive) and dinner on the beach was gorgeous. The cocktails were also very good. There was wi-fi in communal areas although the internet was pretty slow throughout Tonga. It was quite a distance into town tho but taxis are always possible - but you don't really have to go anywhere, boats for whaling, fishing etc pick you up from the wharf.

Room Tip: All rooms seemed pretty good , all facing the sea front.

My husband and I have just returned from 10 nights at the Tongan Beach Resort. The accommodation is comfortable and clean with the most beautiful view. There is a small verandah at the front of each property, a lovely place to enjoy a glass of wine and a good book, from here you step straight on to the pristine beach, a few steps further and you can enjoy snorkeling in the clear water.
The restaurant and bar area is in the centre of the Resort. Sometimes the wi-fi provided in this area works, often it doesnt. The bar offers a good choice of local and imported beers/wines and a cocktail menu. Our meals were chosen from a small but ever changing menu and were always well cooked and fresh.
As lovely as the property is, it was the staff that really made our stay here so special, nothing was ever too much trouble for them, we were waved off each morning when our whale swim boat picked us up from the resort jetty, and welcomed back with smiles at the end of our day at sea.
Doug, the Resort Manager, was always obliging when we needed transport into town.
We can highly recommend booking a massage with the lady from the Pharmacy, she will come the Resort and set up her table in your room.
A perfect place to relax and unwind. You lose track of time here, we rarely knew what the time was and sometimes didnt even know the day!

Room Tip: We were in room 2, this had an adjoining door into room 1, so is suitable for families.
