Mafana Island Beach
Reviewed August 31, 2012

Myself and my girlfriend stayed on Mafana Island for 5 nights in August and it was undoubtedly the highlight of our trip to Tonga apart from swimming with the Whales.
There was only 5 of us including Behan plus his cat on the island and we each had our own Fales which had a huge mozzy net and a large square opening in the front wall that allows you to look out at the sky from your bed.
One of the nights we were left just the 2 of us on the island so we had an entire island just to ourselves which was a great experience.
The kitchen facilities are decent and there is everything you really need for cooking there.
The water out front is good for swimming at high tide although there are places you can walk to nearby that you can swim during low tide.
Our room cost us $75TOP a night for 2 people and it was $10TOP per person each way for your transfer to and from the island.
You will definitely need Mosquito Spray as well as there are plenty, but with a bowl of smokonuts close it tends to keep them away.
We loved the place and will no doubt return if we head back to Tonga and think that Behan is doing an amazing job out there.

I got to stay on Mafana last year and it was amazing. I actually got to be the very first one in the newly built Bamboo folley. I had a hammock, a second floor view of the ocean and surrounding islands, beach at the bottom of the stairs and an incredible host that lit camp fires each night and told stories of how he ended up in paradise. He has a wonderful cat named Peanut and he is overall a great host. At my time there I got to sing in the hammock, walk to the a whole other island via a beautiful beach walk way that showed up during low tide, camp fires at night and got to go to some amazing snorkle trips. Behan even took me to a disappearing island with the most beautiful sand I've ever seen. Overall an amazing experience on a uninhabited island. Definantly the place I would go again for a little solitude and relaxation in paradise.

Came to Mafana Island Backpackers on recommodation of a friend. Came for a weekend and stayed for 2 amazing weeks.
if you are looking for layed back, friendly, basic and very chilly place - this is it!
You have to bring your own food. Behan will pick you up with his very special old boat. Behan the host is a wonderful and very helpful person.
There is a very good compost toilet (absolutely non smelling) and a rainwater shower.
So if you are looking for the Beach-, the Robinson- or the Lostislandfeeling, you should come here and enjoy your bonfire under the amazing sky with thousand of stars of the tongaen sky.
I loved it!
On my way back to Vavau we were so lucky to see the Whales with no one around but our little boat. these are memories for a lifetime!

My girlfriend and I had four nights on Mafana. The place is incredible! Very nice and private beach. Authentic tropical island camping staying in the bamboo fale. Excellent snorkeling, swimming, cooking facilities, toilet facilities, sunshine, explorations of the islands. Good company too, met another two couples during our stay, had good camp fire drinking yarns. Behan and the his pet cat are excellent hosts too! Highly recommended!

Me and my sister stayed 3 nights on Mafana Island on our trip around the world and we rarely had such a caring and lovely host as Behan! He picked us up in Town and brought us to the island. We stayed in one of the tents and it was really comfi and clean. Every night Behan lit a fire for us and brought us some beers and stayed for a while to chat to us.

As we were the only guests we had the beach all to our selves. Everything was perfect. The kitchen is a bit simple, but it has everything you need and it only adds to the Robinson feeling you get on this enchanted little place. I can really recommend this place as Behan will do everything to make you as comfortable as possible. Even his little cat Peanut will say hello from time to time and check if everything is ok.

If life ever bring me back to Tonga I will have another stay on Mafana Island, for sure!

We were on honeymoon, and we stayed at the bamboo fale, our first night, we had the beach all by ourselves. It was like Robinson Curuso's adventure. We really enjoy it and we really admire Behan's passion and patient to build the place all by himselve. We spent 3 nights there just relax walking around the island at the low tide, wading our way to the near by island and explore many different sea creature. and snorkelling at the nearby water. We highly recommand this place if you are looking for more rustic experience.

Room Tip: He is planning to build more bamboo fale which is a good value. though there are a lot of bamboo dus...

The Mafana Island Beach Backpacker is a great place if you are looking for a quiet and private place outside the rather busy Vava'u yacht-scene.
We stayed in one of the tents (which were basic but with a good matress and rather spacious) and it was a little bit like Robinson Crusoe. There is only the camp site on the island, you can rent a kayak to get around or simply relaxe on the beach. There is no electricity but a gas-fueled kitchen to have hot meals.
We very much enjoyed the stay there and highly recommend it.
