“Great place but well out of town”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 13, 2014

We travelled here with our 3 yr old son and 6 month old daughter and had a great time. The accommodation is a little basic but hey, this is Tonga. The staff there, Mosi and Maka are wonderful. I read a comment that someone who stayed here got the impression that they were funding the owners lifestyle as opposed to the owners being fully engaged and while I can agree with this to a certain extent, it is a little cynical. The owners will come round each morning to check that all of the guests are comfortable and apart from that you do not hear too much from them. However, when my wife had to go to hospital after contracting the dengue-fever like bug (nothing to do with cleanliness of resort) they ave us the services of Mosi for as long as we needed to help us through the hospital stay which was invaluable, thank you for that. And it looked like we needed rescuing from the little island by the scuba diving operator (we didn't, he was just giving us and our kayaks a lift back) the owner was there, front and centre, checking everything was ok.
I didn't personally attend the 'feast' or get Mosi to cook for me after the first time but perhaps I'm fussy, it wasn't to my taste but not inedible and I thank her for offering us the consideration of a meal after we had just arrived there.
It is quite remote and the expense of meals, washing and countless trips to the town centre do add up but I could not fault the hosts or their staff. My son loved counting and seeing the pigs, dogs, cows etc on each journey.
In fact, the church service and feeding the pigs, which were both organised by Mosi and Maka were highlights.
Thanks guys.

Thank you for writing a such a good review and for supporting us. I wold like to take this opportunity to explain why we are 'Out Of Town' Town here is in a bay and it is not exactly clean there are lots of boats, yachts and private houses with 'old fashion' sewage systems and no reefs to snorkel. This is why we choose Not be be located there but rather be the First place 'Out Of Town' where the water is clean and the coral and sea life is alive.

For those who need groceries but don't want to go to town we do a free shopping service and collect lists every morning from guests. We also cook if needed but we don't expect everyone to stay here every night so we have a 24 hour sponsored taxi service for 20 pa'anga or 10 AUD per van (normal taxi is 25) to go to town. It is a 12 min drive.

Thank you again for coming to stay with us at Mystic Sands and hope to see you again one day.

We had a spacious, clean suite. At Mystic Sands, we were treated like we were part of the family. Mosi was there to make sure that all needs were being met. She is an incredible cook; cooking up home cooked meals and a wonderful feast. Maka is a sweet man that was always available to take us to town, to the Botanical Gardens and to the airport. Kjell, the owner, came by daily to make sure that we were getting the most of our stay. We are so lucky to have found such a wonderful place to stay while in Tonga. Malo 'aupito!! :)

What a lovely crew they are at Mystic Sands - Kjell and Adriana are awesome and the big-hearted Mosi is a complete gem. We had such a relaxing week: just what the doctor ordered. Lots of lying around reading, a bit of swimming off the pier, and then a couple of fantastic day trips to counteract all the laziness. We kayaked across to Neiafu for lunch one day - I went in the double one with our 10-year-old and my husband tied my daughter's kayak to his, which worked well. There's an island en route where you can stop for a play around the pier if the kids are tired.
For our 21-year anniversary all four of us went to Fetoka Island (quick boat ride from the old Harbour) and spent an amazing afternoon and evening at Lisa and Ben's incredible Mandala resort. It's like something out of a movie - they really are living the dream. Their private island takes about two minutes to circumnavigate on foot - it is tiny and beautiful and Lisa cooked us a fantastic meal in the gorgeous wall-less restaurant they have built.
A day out snorkelling with Don (Hakau Adventures) was another highlight - the kids completely rose to the occasion despite not being hugely confident in the water: they were soon swimming over 'cliffs', into caves and even over sleeping reef sharks! The water is very buoyant, which helped a lot.
Kjell stops by and visits each morning and was extremely helpful in organising things like the Fetoka visit and the snorkelling.
We were very grateful to be able to attend two of Mosi's 'feasts' and also have her cook for us one night, as the resort next door was closed, and the food supplies that are available in the shops are extremely limited. That goes for dry goods as well as fresh fruit and vegetables - it would be worth packing a few treats if you're used to culinary holidays. We booked a daily breakfast with our room and Mosi turned up each morning with eggs, bacon, fresh fruit and french toast - yum!
We stayed in the big house, which is great, with heaps of room, lovely views, fans in the rooms and mosquito nets on the bedroom windows.
These mosquito nets mean you can leave the big window shutters open every night (except for it's really windy) which is lovely. You get the odd hopeful stray cat coming in at night (the kids loved that) but it's not a problem as long as you don't leave food out.
Thanks again Kjell, Adriana, Mosi and Maka - you guys rock.

Mystic Sands is truly an amazing place to stay! Very small and very special. Great room that gives the best of all worlds....... bed, sofa, clothes storage, good shower room, kitchen area with fridge and cooking facilities....it's got it all! Plus a balcony/terrace area with furniture and stunning views......what more could you want?

Kjell and Adrianna are excellent owners who came to see us every day. They are well supported by Mosi and Macca who look after the immediate needs of their guests. Mosi cooks good food and takes care to ensure that everyone has everything they need. Macca runs a taxi service and fetches any shopping that guests may need,

The beach area and the gardens are kept beautifully clean and tidy.

This really is a wonderful place to stay and we hope to be able to return one day.

This is truly a special place, off the beaten track, remote and away from everything.

We were looking for something unique where we can dive amazing sites and just relax and enjoy the warm water and weather. This is it!

Perfect small place, 4 rooms beside each other, very clean and tidy, nice sandy grounds and beautiful warm clear blue water right in front of you

The dive boat picks you up right there, how easy is this, and there are many dives sites close by.

We traveled in low season and food supply seems to be a challenge, so be aware and come prepared. We tried to get fresh fish for 4 days with no luck, and hardly any fresh vegetables or fruits were available.
If you do not come for the food experience, this is a great place
The host Mosi and Macca look after you constantly and the very friendly owners are always on call if needed.

We would love to come back any time!

Room Tip: Room one give you extra evening sun, blizz

Thank you for the review and for the kind words, it was great meeting you. The tip you are telling about the food situation in Vava'u in the low season is correct and i would like to add that if you are bringing something the best items to bring are:Cheese (good one, we have the rest), Wine (if you want better than 20$ one), Steaks (if you like good meat).
The rest we have, fish can be bothersome if the weather is not good as the fishermen boats are quite small but lobster is available most of the time.

Thank you again and hope to see you again some day ;)

This was the second time I have stayed at Mystic Sands and it was perfect! Once again Kjell and Adrianna and Mosi made it the best place in the world to stay. They were so helpful with everything. Mosi also made us an amazing breakfast too which I will have again the next time I stay. The resort grounds were as always kept absolutely stunning. Kayaking and snorkeling is also a must do and a spot of sunbathing too followed by a cold beer and a BBQ if you stay in the Beach House. Maka also offers a taxi service into town if you need and can also pick you up later on. He also does a special deal with the Aquarium Cafe which is an amazing place to eat at and you get a free return trip back to the resort. I can't wait to come back. You will need to be there to experience it. So worth it!!!

Room Tip: Any room is a good room!

We stayed in Mystic Sands with our 6 years old daughter for 6 nights. The resort is very well maintained and clean, the apartments have nice terraces with sea view and on the way to the saltwater pool, which is perfect for kids or lazy adults, you walk on beautiful sand. You immediately feel welcome in the moment you meet the staff which is very friendly an courteous, they also are very helpful when it comes to flight and hotel bookings for our further trip. It seems like they really want you to have a good and carefree time. They really take their time for you and you will find out a lot about tongan culture if you talking to them.As we arrived at the low season the manager offered us to stay at the very nice beach villa just next to the resort , for the same price as the apartment. What we did of course. If you are too lazy to cook yourself or go out to a restaurant, do not miss Mosis excellent cooking, yummy! I also can recommend strongly a snorkeling trip with Don, !

Room Tip: we stayed at room 4, as far as we could see, all rooms looked quite similar
