“Dissapointed with what they didn't have”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 24, 2011

Our dining in Vava'u could be summed up as "the hunt for lobster" which was harder to find than all the pre-visit reading indicated. Same with fish it wasn't that easy to find a good variety. Went to the Balcony when we were told by a waiter they had Mahi Mahi and Tuna, we had, had Tuna about 3 times by then so were keen on the Mahi Mahi, only to be told when we ordered that they didn't have it. We ordered a drink the 3 girls ordered Mango pie which we were assured they had, and.....no they didn't. In the interim I had asked about the seafood platter which had mini spring rolls, samosas and seemed little seafood. We gave up.

I did get to talk to the owner who was lovely and we discussed problems getting fish etc (we run a seafood restaurant ourselves). The view was also great but unfortunately cannot give a good review to a place we left due to gaps in their menu.

“Great food, people and location!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 11, 2010

Trish and Alex are great hosts and run a terrific restaurant. The food was always fresh with the local seafood bought in the morning and served at dinner (and lunch). I lost count how many times we ate there for dinner! We ate there every morning for breakfast due to the appalling food and service at the hotel where we stayed. Recommend this restaurant highly!

“Great place if you like to party”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 10, 2010

The hosts are charming and helpful. The location does have panoramic views, the beer is cold, the menu very good and there is sky TV to watch the latest footy match. However, the beds in the accommodation provided are VERY firm, there is no mosquito mesh on most of the windows and small noisy stand fans to keep you cool because you can't leave the windows open. Unfortunately the location is also very close to a very noisy dance club which is just down the hill. Patrons arrive and leave in cars and trucks that pull up across the road and where they spend a lot of time "socializing noisily" till the early hours. Friday night is the most arduous as the party music doesn't finish till 2 am and it's 3:30 am by the time the last guests have said their goodbyes just outside the bedroom window. Saturday the club closes at 12 midnight but it's about 1am or later before you can get any sleep. Great if you like to party, but if you need sleep go a few KM out of town. Most places provide free transport if needed.

“Pretty good”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 9, 2010

Good fresh fish, well prepared. Not on the waterfront so doesnt have the atmosphere of say Mango. Very (and I mean very) chatty owners - but they do make an effort!

“The Balcony and Cyclone Rene”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 9, 2010

We ate breakfast (they dont' serve), lunch and dinner at The Balcony while we were off our sailboat during Cyclone Rene in February 2010. The staff was great. We tried everything on the menu and it was all VERY GOOD. The Balcony has rooms above the restaurant that we stayed in. Lost electricity and they still found ways to prepare, cook and serve meals. Providing us with bread and butter for breakfast as well as hot water to make nescafe or tea. DELIGHTFUL STAFF AND GREAT FOOD.

MUST TRY: Ota Ika (fresh fish marinated in coconut milk). Traditional Tongan dish.
