Laulea Beach House

Definitely a well-kept secret and I find myself a bit reluctant to share it. We treated ourselves to three nights at Laulea at the end of our three week trip to Tonga and are very glad we did. A real home-from-home that is quiet, well-kept, clean and very comfortable. Wonderfully relaxing with no demented cockerels or barking dogs (except Marley the delightful puppy) and very quiet neighbours (a pretty and well maintained Tongan cemetery). It's a lovely beach with hammocks in the shady coconut trees and some good snorkelling holes. Sammy who is looking after the place at the moment is a great host and a creative and talented cook and Cath the owner was extremely helpful and friendly. We would happily have stayed longer and would come back again

We stayed at Laulea Beach House for 1 night awaiting our transfer to Vava'u. The service was great, food excellent and the room was clean and comfortable. The house is located right on the beach and gives you a real "home away from home" feeling.

It was beautiful having a stroll on the beach right on your doorstep with no one else around. It felt really private and had beautiful tropical surroundings. Communication through email was quick and clear and everything was arranged for us at a great price too. It was lovely to be picked up from the airport with a smile at 2.00 in the morning. We were very generously offered an early check in which was much appreciated after a long flight. The airport is only 10 minutes away. Would highly recommend staying here!

A wonderful experience! Its definitely the best kept secret on Tongatapu! Sammy, Cath & Hapi have the details ofd everything handled - they are very friendly, create a relaxed family atmosphere and the food is top class. Sammy has a passion for cooking and it truly shows!! The accommodation is clean and comfortable - drift into sleep with the sound of the waves. A perfect place to relax and unwind. I highly recommend at l;east 1 nights stay here!!!

Room Tip: The fale is the best room and they only have Queen beds - there are no twin rooms available.

We were impressed with Laulea Beach House. I almost want to keep the place our little secret but these guys deserve a good review.

Muna, Vea and Sammy all looked after us really well - they were all super friendly and made sure we had everything we needed (thanks, guys!). They recommended and booked activities for us, drove us to some places and generally chatted to us and made us feel welcome. The guys even climbed a coconut tree for us to get some fresh coconuts which they then opened for us to drink (yum - I'm not a big drinker but it was really good with some local coconut rum!).

After having our home made breakfast, we could walk right out onto the beach - which we had to ourselves for the whole day. The location is quite far away from Nuku'alofa but we really liked that for the privacy we got from it - it was like staying on a private island without private island prices! The beach house was within walking distance of the Anahulu Caves and we also walked to the Ohalei resort for the buffet and dance show on Friday night which was good fun. We managed to get into town a couple of times either as part of a round the tour island or heading into town with our hosts when they were going in. Because you can have home cooked meals at Laulea, it also isn't a problem being far from the big town restaurants etc, and we brought home one takeaway meal from town that they were happy for us to reheat in their kitchen. We spent a lovely afternoon snorkelling at the beach right outside - there's a little pass in the waves that is quite impressive to look down through as it goes really deep in the gap between the rocks/coral.

The place was clean and the photos the previous reviewer uploaded are an accurate representation of what it was like. The towels and bedding were all new and fresh. We could have filtered water or tea and coffee whenever we wanted. It sounds like they might be doing some renovations soon and judging by the new things they have recently bought for the place, I imagine it will only keep getting better there.

As for the room, it sounds like we had the same room as the previous reviewer. It was comfortable and it had everything we needed, including a jug of drinking water by the bed. While the shower was just a trickle (which didn't matter as it's warm in Tonga!), we had hot water and constant electricity, which friends who stayed down the road said they didn't have all the time. My partner didn't sleep well because of a noisy stray cat outside but I slept like a log and thought it was very peaceful and quiet - much more so than at home. The price was very reasonable for what we got.

If I was going back to Tonga I would stay there again.

Prices of things at or around Laulea (all in Tongan Pa'anga Aug/Sep 2013):
One way taxi Laulea - Airport $20
Continental breakfast at Laulea $9 (more for a full on cooked one) lunches and dinners $26-$40.
Anahulu Caves - $10 (but it was pouring with rain the day we went so with no-one getting the generator going to turn on the lights, it was free). I'd recommend it - take a torch.
Ohalei buffet and dance show $40 - definitely recommend it .
Round the island tour $140 for two of us (probably wouldn't recommend it for that price - maybe hire a car instead? Worth seeing the blowholes anyway).
Trip to Pangaimotu (island with snorkelling etc) $20 each return plus trip to town - highly recommend it.
When we shared a lift with people already going to town it was $20 one way, otherwise $50 one way in a taxi. We didn't see the bus that some of the guidebooks say you can take.

After travelled a week away from home, this place make me feels like I am home again. It is a pity because we just spent a night for our transiting flight to Vava'u after arriving from Suva (Fiji).

It's like a house, tastefully furnished place on the beach. There is a BBQ area but no pool. Why do you need a pool when the sea is just about 20m away..... There are 3 rooms attached to this house. We stayed in the one that is attached with bathroom and a walk-out balcony. There is another private room just about 3m detached from the main house.

They have a few hammock and you could just laze around and read a book or even catch a nap. It is very peaceful, quiet and hear the waves.....

Because our room is attached to the house, I was awaken by the brewing of the coffee. Very refreshing (for coffee lovers). If you don't like the hammock, the living room and the tv corner is the other 2 common area that you can laze around.

Bedroom. Because Laulea (ex- Matatahi Resort), was newly refurbished, the bed, pillow and comforter are very comfy. The towels are quality stuff as well. And well thought off. There is a jar flask with water and 2 glasses awaiting for us. A bed side alarm clock. A small torched. A tower fan. Of course bedside lamp.

The only setback (I felt), it is really in the middle of no where. Though it is on a beach, but no surrounding shops or restaurant around it. Literally, you will have to eat in the house which means you have no option. But, Sammy cooked us great stuff. You can custom it to your liking. Of course you have a choice of fish or meat stuff. Don't get me wrong here. But it is really a private beach house and situated next to a Tongian Christian cemetery. This cemetery has a great ocean view and I was wondering what on earth is a cemetery doing on a beach!!

The room that we had, attached to the bathroom, the shower water pressure seem to be a little low. It'll take you a while.....

Overall, recommended place to stay if you are tired with the normal hotel rooms and stuff. Near to airport but far to town. So, depends on what you want and need.
