“awesome place to stay”
Reviewed April 24, 2009

we rented the 2 bedroom apartment for 2 weeks and loved it! The property was gated off so we had plenty of privacy. Beautiful landscaping. We would definately recommend Heilala Holiday Lodge to anyone looking for a peaceful inexpensive place to stay.

I stayed at Heilala Holiday Lodge for 5 days then another 3 days. I stayed in the regular rooms, which were more than adequate for what I required. Everything was immaculate and well kept. The house is very well mosquito proofed. The food was excellent. Sven and Calo always had time to chat and answer questions. This place offers fantastic value for money; for $AUD35 I had a private room, snorkling/beach towel for use, and a breakfast of fresh fruit and bread. There is plenty of privacy, and I came back very late on a few occasions with no issue with the owners. I can recommend going to Hina Cave with Calo and other people, this was a really fun night out. Thankyou Sven, you run a very nice accommodation...

We decided to stay here because of all the good reviews on tripadvisor and the very reasonable price.

And it turned out to be a very good decision indeed as we had a look at almost all the hotels/ lodges available in Nuku'alofa. There is nothing compareable in town. Everything is just perfect at Heilala, exactly as you want it to be. All the Fales are very nice furnished, big enough, cleaned properly everyday and placed in a lovely tropical garden. It makes you want to stay longer for sure! The tropical breakfast is included in the room rate as the free airport pick-up transfer and internet.

Sven (the owner/manager) is a great source of information and is very helpful with all the day tours to the small islands, around the main island, motorcar rental and cultural shows. He seems to know everything about all the possibilities and is always makes the effort to ensure you have a great stay.

He and his team are extremly lovely and we had a great time staying here with extraordinary lobster and tuna steak for dinner. Seriously with all the perfect service and the great cooking for dinner we sometimes felt like living in a 5 star hotel!

We even decided to come back after a few days in Ha'atafu Beach as this is by far the best value, nicest atmosphere and well kept rooms on the main island. We would always come back to stay at Heilala and recommend it for every traveller visiting Tonga. You will surely enjoy every minute of your stay as much as we did!

Make sure you join for the trip to the Hina Cave as they stage by far the best cultural show on the island!

We stayed here in september 2008 in a superior fale with our then 6 month old son, they were very accomadating for him, even putting a jolly-jumper out at meal times! (Yummy food!), but the downside for us was it didnt feel private enough as it always felt like you were being watched, and felt like we were expected to have the free breakfast and participate in the group activities (we have a friend who lives there and it was our 2nd trip so we didnt need too). We expected a wee bit more for a superior fale ie. toilets that flush propaly, sheets changed ( we stayed for 8 nights and they were not changed at all). We would stay again but only for 2 or 3 nights, no more than that.

Malo e lelei ,

Thank you very much for this review and comments and our apologies if we have not been able to meet all your needs during your stay!
The main purpose of my response is as a suggestion to all future travelers, please note; Tonga's main Tourism season is from about July to November each year with the rest of the year being relatively more quite. So, if you are coming to Tonga for a quite time away, we will do our utmost to make this come true for you at any time of the year, but please bear in mind that in the middle of high season, I have to confess, it can sometimes be a little touristy!
As for the changing of linen as well as the option to have breakfast and arranging activities, we encourage all our guests to speak to us on arrival or during their stay or alternatively browse through our Information booklets that are available in every room!
Thanks again, Ofa atu and all the best!

Totally enjoyed our 4 days at Sven's resort. Made wonderful acquaintances with all guests at the lodge. Sven's mother cooks like a German chef and the dinner meals were all 5 star quality. Gardens are unbelievable and well kept. Swimming pool adds a great touch when you can't make it to the beach!

If you're looking to save money, this is a very good option. Not only is it a cheap place to stay, but you get picked up for free coming into Tonga on an international flight that would otherwise cost you around $40 Pa'anga (even at 1 am in the morning, this was why I chose this place) and you even get a free fruit breakfast. The host Sven is very helpful and is more than willing to organise transfers to the airport at around half the normal rate, and activities around Tongatapu. The particular room I stayed in was very basic, but you get what you pay for, they do have more expensive accommodation on the premises.
