“Gorgeous beach, beautiful spot”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 25, 2013

I stayed at Heilala Holiday Lodge for a week with my mum - we had a wonderful time; the owners were friendly & helpful and the grounds itself are lovely. The lodge is right on the beach, snorkelling equipment is provided for free and the complimentary breakfast each morning is delicious. We borrowed Heilala's bikes to go cycling most days (they have 5 - all are free to use). Would thoroughly recommend this place for a down-to-earth polynesian island holiday, we want to go back again!

Room Tip: Choose the Tongan Fales - well worth it.

Recently we spent two weeks at heilala holiday lodge. Our family consisted of myself, my husband and our two year old daughter. We had the most fabulous, relaxing time there. The accommodation was great and very well priced. We stayed in a superior fale and it was well appointed and comfortable. The whole property was well set up and beautifully maintained. We spent our time swimming and building sandcastles on the beach. In the evening, we ate at the lodges restaurant. The food was simple, well cooked, well priced and most of all, delicious! They very kindly would cook a smaller meal for our daughter which was hugely appreciated. I would suggest to other travellers to take a good supply of snack type foods, especially if travelling with children, as the food in the supermarkets is expensive compared to NZ. Sven and Carolina ( the owners) are incredible people and we would return there for another holiday just to see them again. While the lodges location is set up for a relaxing type of holiday, it is easy to catch the bus into the main town (45mins at $2pp) to visit the markets, stock up on fresh fruit/veges/fish or do a day trip to one of the outer islands. There is not a lot to spend your money on, which again makes it a relatively cheap holiday. Tonga itself is still very much a developing nation, especially in regards to tourism, but you can not go wrong staying at Heilala - I recommend it 100%.

Room Tip: Go for the superior fale if your money will let you- having your own fridge in your room is a bonus...

We stayed two nights and loved this place. Sven is friendly, helpful and organised. There are many nice touches with setting and decor, and the overall complex is beautifully maintained.
The room we had was clean and nicely decorated.

We (myself and 9 girlfriends) have just arrived back from a 5 night stay at Heilala. I have travelled extensively and have never met such lovely hosts as Sven and Kolo. The property is very well maintained, the Fales were perfect for a relaxing beach holiday. We took a fair amount of nibbles and wine/duty free so were self sufficient for lunches, but we did eat at the restaurant a couple of nights. The food was wholesome and filling and very good value for money. This place is perfect if you are looking for somewhere to totally unwind and recharge. Not sure there is enough for my two young teenage girls to do though. but I will definitely be back...love this place.

Stayed a week and loved it. Lovely welcoming staff who couldn't do enough to please. I have allergy issues and they catered wonderfully for me. When coconut cream would have been too rich I had lovely tuna or snapper with tasty salads. Breakfast was so filling my husband didn't even try the pancakes on the extras menu. Beautifully presented fresh fruit on banana leaves; fresh coconut, pawpaw, pineapple, banana and water melon, followed by toast and home-made pawpaw jam. Instant coffee & tea or fresh lemon grass & basil tea each morning. We ate there most evenings with three options - fish, meat (usually chicken) or vegetarian. I think only the kayaks had a charge; the rest wifi, coral shoes, snorkel gear, bikes were free (though we took our own beach towels, coral shoes & snorkel gear). It is the best beach on the island though it is coral sand compared to sand-sand we have in NZ. At low tide the water is just at the top of your thighs but go along the beach a little and it is deeper. Lovely fish in the water. We had swims before breakfast each day, then off to the little shops along the road using the bikes (a bit run down but they work, just remember they have no hand breaks - use foot breaks), for fresh bread, eggs, etc. We took food into Tonga (sealed), our gin and tonic, nuts, tin olives, as everything of course is mostly imported in Tonga. Recommend the more expensive Island Night ($40 pp Tongan dollars) includes served smorgasbord with pig on spit. The best cultural dancing we've seen (and we've seen in Fiji, Samoa and Rarotonga), also the day trip with Vai (organised by Heilala). He is a gem. Special thanks to Sven, Kalolina & Una!

Stunning place the nicest people you can imagine running it. The rooms were beautifully looked after. The food was amazing every night. Stunning breakfast to start the day. I can't say enough good stuff about the place. Only thing I would recommend is bringing duty free because the beer is very expensive and hard to find there.

I stayed for 3 nights at Heilala in April 2013 and had a wonderfully relaxing time. If you are looking for somewhere quiet to stay where you can snorkel, swim, read a book, relax in a hammock then this is a top spot. It is a fair way out from Nuku'alofa so not the place to stay if you are working in the town centre, but it is the perfect place to stay if you want a holiday. I thought the food was great and I loved going to sleep listening to the waves rolling on the beach. Great service and great value for money, wonderful place to stay.
