Friends had recommended this family run resort but even then, it surpassed our expectations. Ha'atafu is a great place for a blobby break, when you really feel the need to step off the rat race of life. Not much to do on Tonga tapu except rest, read and swim. Don't stay here however if you like to keep to yourself as the communal dining promotes inter-mingling. The breakfasts and dinners are great, food never ran short and shared facilities are kept exceptionally clean. It's a great place for families as the kids run free and the lagoon swimming is really safe. Highly recommended, will return one day.

We recently stayed at Ha'atafu Beach Resort as part of a large group (21). Hola & Moana were gorgeous hosts, nothing was a problem, even for a large group like ours. Rooms were basic, but clean and comfortable, food was delicious and catered for all tastes. We had no bathroom, but was not a problem, after swimming all day, you only needed a quick rinse at night. After 10 days it felt like we were leaving as family friends rather than guests at a resort. It was lovely for the kids to be able to play and interact with the staff's children. The perfect getaway for relaxing, reading a good book, snorkling, surfing, fishing or paddleboarding. Easy having such a kiddy friendly lagoon right out the front. Really enjoyed our stay and would love to return.

My wife and I stayed two nights en-route to Vavaú, in one of the two premium fales (#11). The view to the water and the sound of the water at night were very pleasant, and the overhead fan was whisper quiet. Meals were quite good, and the friendliness of the staff was great. Would also recommend Holty's next door for meals and drinks.

Room Tip: The two Premium Fales are joined and equally good.

To Hola, Moana, Steve, Sesika, family and staff, we have had such a lovely time and you have shown us true hospitality, absolutely nothing was too hard and you went over and above for us during our stay. We have stayed at many places over the years and to be expected when you want something there is a charge included in that service, but not here. We needed transfers and they arranged a time when they would be in town already so that they could do it for free, we needed to go into town to use the internet cafe, they said dont bother, use their computer. They arranged a great island tour for us using Vei from the next village that I can highly recommend. They gave us beach towels to use as we neglected to bring our own, I was sick whilst there and they got me special food to suit and checked on me, they were just lovely.
Sure this isnt the Ritz, but we knew we would be having shared facilities like the caravan parks at home and the only surprise was how often they cleaned it so that it was constantly spotless and we never waited for a shower. This just added to the charm and a more true island experience. Now I have to mention the food, breakfast awesome, the usual suspects, lunch also v good but the dinner, what can I say about the dinner...they would start by teasing you around 5 or six by all the yummy smells coming from the kitchen and then around dusk, it was time for dinner, they would bring out the catch of the day and various other meat dishes, rice, salad, garlic bread, etc, etc. I just wish I could cook half as good as that, and of course we always went back for seconds......
We have met some great people travelling over the years and this was no exception and I would have no hesitation in recommending Ha'atafu to my friends back home and we would stay here again if we were lucky enough to come back, thanks everyone, Brett and Naomi

Thanks to Steve, Sesika, Moana, Hola, Dasa and all at Ha'atafu, our holiday was everything we had hoped and so much more. We stayed in a traditional garden fale for the first week and one of the more luxurious beachfront fales (with ensuite) for the second. Both were very clean and excellent value, especially as breakfasts and dinners are included in the tarrif. Breakfast (eggs, pancakes, cereal, wonderful fresh fruit salad etc) and the always-delicious evening buffet (featuring fish caught that morning and lots of local produce) are served at a long table in the communal dining area, which suits Ha'atafu's relaxed, convivial atmosphere. We went primarily for the snorkelling and were not disappointed, with an endless variety of brightly coloured fish in the coral lagoon straight in front of the resort. But it was the warmth and friendliness of all at Ha'atafu that made our Tongan holiday such a memorable experience.

To Steve, Sesika, Moana and Hola - malo aupito from Virginia & Tony Hoddle for the best holiday we have ever had. This resort is the most relaxing place you will go to. If you are baby boomers like us you will appreciate the atmosphere of this resort. But be warned it is not the Ritz. It is for those that just want to relax with no phone, no computer and no TV (there is one in the dining room if you really need it and there is internet connection as well). We did not miss any of those things the whole time we were there This is place for any age group and speaking to families that were their they said it was ideal for them as the kids run around all day and then go to sleep really early.
We were lucky enough to have one of the ensuite fales which were very clean and spacious with the most comfortable bed we've ever slept in. Your bath towels are changed every day and your sheets are changed every 3rd day. Just remember to include soap in your packing. You can sit on your verandah and watch the surf as my husband did every day or you can watch whales breaching just off the reef or you can watch the most beautiful sunsets setting into the ocean.
One of the reasons we went there was so my husband could have a surf. He wasn't dissapointed at all as mother nature can be fickle sometimes. The waves were not 8 foot and barrelling but more like 3 to 6 foot and smooth and the best time is at high tide because of the reef.
As for me not being a surfer there was still plenty for me to do. I like nothing better than lying on the beach and reading a good book which I got to do. We also went snorkling and kayaking in the lagoon which has crystal clear water and an abundance of fish. We also went into town with Moana one day, got up close and personal with whales (Tonga is only one of two countries in the world that let you swim with whales) and an island tour.
As for the food. What can one say but sublime. For breakfast you have eggs any way you want, pancakes, cereal and fruit salad served with as much coffee or tea as you want. Lunch is a variety of sandwiches and rolls and salads with the most beautiful smoothies. But the piece de resisance is dinner. Steve will cook you up some of the most scrumptous meals from that mornings fish catch that just melt in your mouth. You will not be dissapointed.
So if you are looking for somewhere to go and just completely relax, get some good surf, meet some amazing people this is the place to go. I am planning next years stay at Ha atafu already. Alu a. Virginia & Tony from Soldiers Point Australia
