On my last day in Tonga a local taxi driver suggested seeing the blowholes and I am so pleased that I listened to him.
They are spectacular and stretch along 5kms of coastlline - not spread out along 5 kms but a continuous chain of blowholes. The blowholes have formed where the local reef has been raised and the incoming waves explode through the natural channels and holes in the old coral bed. Some holes are small and others large but the overall effect is fantastic.
Be prepared to get wet. Be prepared for some small local souvenir sellers who will politely offer to sell you local handicrafts. They are not pushy.
Tonga is not well signposted so I recommend a taxi. They are reasonably priced and you won't get lost.
It was the perfect end to a great holiday.
