We were looking for a 4 night trip from Bogota, and decided to go to Leticia at the last minute. We trawled travel agents in Bogota and were quoted a variety of prices for a variety of Decameron hotels in the area. Anyone familiar with Colombian travel agents will now that you cannot get instant confirmation on anything , we were told to come back the day before we were due to travel to see if our reservation had been accepted.
We decided to avoid the Decameron experience (even though they seem to have a lock down on all the hotels in the area) and contact the Hotel Anaconda directly. They quoted us a rate of 140,000 pesos per person per night including breakfast and dinner.
We flew down with Aero Republica having picked up a 200,000 peso Internet fare and caught a taxi from the airport to the hotel (7000 pesos). Check in was smooth and we saw a variety of rooms before settling on one with a "view" of the amazon and Peru. Breakfast was bog standard eggs etc but dinner was delicious, fresh fish caught from the amazons served with patacon and rice or salad. The first day we were there we made a few adjustments to the menu such as supplementing patacon with rice and incurred an extra charge. We left a nice tip for the waiter and day 2 we were not charged for any extras, and the service improved.
We lounged by the pool on Sunday, it was busy as the hotel allows outside guests to pay for pool access. The pool snack bar is extremely over priced, we ordered a plate of chips (4000 pesos) and were served a plate containing 8 chips. Potato is the fuel of Colombia and extremely cheap here. We complained to the restaurant manager who was unapologetic but offered to bring a few extra chips (4 in total).
The customer service was a bit tired and as in many Colombian establishments there is a hesitance to 'think outside the box' and be flexible.Employee rights and benefits in the service industry are non existent, the minimum wage pitiful and owner/managers can be a touch tyrannical (we tried to take that into account when dealing with the receptionists/maids/waiters etc ).
We wanted to hire bikes, the reception had no information on this, yet we walked outside the hotel virtually into a bike hire shop (5000 pesos for half a day diagonally opposite the BBVA bank)
Having read reviews here that the hotel tour agent was useful we had high expectations, however we were told by the receptionist that they only open it for groups, despite being three, that was not considered a group. We were directed to the Decameron hotel who had a tour agent selling tours and day trips open 7 days a week. We took a night safari on the Amazon (66 thousand pesos) and went to the Amacayacu national park, This was an interesting experience, Decameron administer this 'National Park' and having visited Tayrona the previous month we expected to have a bit of a wander. We payed the 31,000 foreigners rate for which we received no proof of payment and then were told that we would need to hire the services of a guide (45,000 pesos) if we wanted to go for a walk. The walk we wanted turned into a 2 hour canoe ride and 45 minute walk up and down a hill. A bit disappointing considering we were expecting a national park experience.
The manager closed the pool with no notice whatsoever on our third day, we were a bit peeved as the heat makes the pool a blessing. We complained to the manager who in-fact was not really the manager and had to defer to the owner who lived in Bogota. They offered a 10% discount on the room for that night. n.b you can nip down the road to the Decameron hotel and visit their pool for 15,000 pesos.
Overall I would stay here again for the pool, dinner, location and price.
