We had an amazing three days. Our guide and drivers were fantastic and everything went smoothly with each site visited being fantastic. Would have liked more information for the sites visited but everything else was great.

“Do not choose Andes Salt Expeditions!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 1, 2012

We did a 2 night/3day salt flat tour tour in Uyuni with Andes Salt Expeditions in December 2011.

Pretty many things went wrong... First we were promised that we will get an english speaking guide for the tour. In the morning when the tour was supposed to start, we were told that we are not going to get english speaking guide. We got 100 bolivianos back but felt that they only wanted one more paying customer in the car instead of the guide.

Second thing was the salt flat tour itself. Fish island was clearly marked as one of the highlights of the tour and we were clearly promised to visit it. Even the guys who signed in on the starting day were told that fish island was on our route. But for some reason we didn't visit the fish island. Driver didn´t give us any kind of information what was happening or explanation for skipping the island. We have talked with other travellers who used different agencies and they visited fish island on the same day. So weather can't be the reason for skipping it. There were also other changes in the program that we were not informed about.

Third thing was the quality of the service. Both of the drivers were really rude and didn't have any idea how to serve customers. Our driver didn't want to answer any question or he wasn't willing to tell us what is going to happen next. We felt like we were in a hurry all the time. Sometimes we wanted to take photographs or stay little bit longer in one place but he was yelling "VAMOS!". We didn't actually get any information from him, only in front of the main sights he said couple of sentences in Spanish, nothing more. That is not a guided tour!

We sent E-mail to the company complaining about these things but got no reply. I really can't understand why this company is recommended in many guidebooks!

“Bottom Line: Shop around. A little extra money goes A LONG WAY”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 9, 2011

I have a bit of a rant, but hopefully someone in this company realises that their professionalism needs to be lifted. My main gripe with Andes Salt Expeditions was that I never felt like they really wanted my business nor cared about the customer. From our first contact in the office (never mind that it should have been the bus terminal pickup but they failed to deliver on that), the staff seemed more burdened by our presence than welcoming.

We had a host of problems including being told on Day One at 10:30am when we were supposed to depart that the drivers and cars were not available due to some sort of holiday (cannot imagine how this is unforeseeable?!) as well as getting in to a fight with a company representative when my friend was not able to eat for a second day in a row because the guides were incapable of communicating the vegetarian request to the kitchen. This was definitely not helped by the fact that my friend was called “disrespectful” for raising the issue and we were both labelled “bad travelers” when we got upset because the said rep was drinking tequilla and playing cards instead of providing any real help. Essentially this person from the company said that we paid less and should therefore not expect so much! My only question is, why even offer the vegetarian option?!

It’s lucky that the attractions in and around Uyuni speak for themselves, because truly they are spectacular and worth any bit of hassle along the way. In the end we had a freelance driver called Milton whom while not English speaking was really professional and every bit the workhorse! It seems to me that if you pay a little extra, the service improvement is tenfold and that can be the difference between a good time and an amazing time. Remembering that Bolivia is a developing country, I have heard from other travelers that it is still possible to receive professional service, and when things go wrong there are providers willing to communicate and perform service recovery which can make a huge difference.

NOTE: This was a 3d/2n trip
