This is one of my first reviews on trip advisor, but had such a great time with Red Planet tours and Obed our guide, that I thought I should right a review. On April 7th I started on a 3 day tour that took us thru the Salt Flats on Day one which was amazing, especially the photos. On day 2 we went through the Atacama desert and ended up going as high a 5,000 meter above sea level, and end up at a nice hot springs. On day 3 it is more of the desert and some rock climbing on the way back to Uyuni. Obed and red planet made sure that all us had a good time (Obed speaks english) and food was great and hostel where what u should expect from the country your in. My suggest is to have some altitude and plenty of warm clothes and a good camera cause there is plenty to see. Enjoy your trip with red planet.

Used Red Planet for the 3D/2N Salar tour. Found them very good to deal with. Our guide Obed was excellent, genuinely nice guy, very accommodating, took so many photos for us, explained everything and came across as interested and proud of his country / area. Very good English and generally quiet safe and cautious in the driving department also. Food was good considering where you are (middle of nowhere). Accommodation on second night is very basic but everyone is in the same boat.

They only take cash in the office (total pain) but minor in the grand scheme of things. Ask for Obed as your guide!

We researched a lot of companies before deciding to go with Red Planet. The main reason we chose them was because they didn't have many bad reviews and, given that they are more expensive than many of the other companies, we expected a better quality tour with (hopefully) less problems with the driver, vehicle etc.

The jeep provided was in good condition and the driver/guide (Eber) spoke very good English and was a very safe, confident driver. He was also very helpful when it came to taking photos on the Salar.

There were 6 of us in the jeep (plus the driver) which, in my opinion, is too many - the two people in the back seat didn't have enough leg room so it was quite uncomfortable back there.

The food on the tour was good. The accommodation was basic but ok. The hot water bottle on the second night was a nice touch.

One thing I didn't like about Red Planet was that the company wasn't upfront about a change in the itinerary. In all our correspondence with the company over a number of weeks leading up to the tour not once was it mentioned that we would not be visiting the "Fish Island". Even when the lady explained the itinerary on the day we left, she didn't mention this - actually she didn't mention Fish Island at all, which we found unusual. When we queried her on this she said that it was not possible to go there as it was too wet. This was the first we had heard of this - we had spoken to many tourists who had done the Salar tour with other companies and they had gone there in the last few days. She said Red Planet had not investigated whether it was possible to get there yet (since the end of the rainy season) and therefore we would not be going. We were pretty pissed off as this is one of the main attractions of the salt flats and it was misleading of them not to disclose to us upfront that we wouldn't see this on the tour. Had we known, we probably would have found another company to go with (we really wanted to see this). For this reason, I have given the company an average rating - it left a very sour taste in our mouth .

We booked with Red Planet Expeditions for the 3 day/2 night Uyunni tour with a transfer to San Pedro de Atacama, after researching a variety of different options. We were sold on Red Planet as our friends traveled with them the month before.

As we were on a tight timeline, we needed to book our tour in advance, which is when we realized that the business practices were a bit odd. Our friend who toured with them 3 weeks earlier was quoted a different price (cheaper), and when we wrote to Red Planet to ask them about the discrepancy in pricing and subsequently, cc'ing one another, we were ignored. And continued to be ignored, until we buckled and said we'd pay their quoted price. Obviously, not candidates for best business practices.

The tour itself was interesting. 2 caravans departed, we were fortunately in a car with 3 others (5 total) so we had a bit more space, than people who were 6 in a land cruiser (your knees and legs will suffer regardless). The landcruisers are late model cruisers, and each of the drivers is your guide for the 3 days. Snacks are provided, as are top 40 90's and early 2000's tunes (which can be fun).. Day 1 is in the salt flats, Day 2 in the desert, and Day 3 brings you to the sulfur hot springs.

Red Planet provides all meals, sleep sacks, hot water bottles for the hostels (which you will want). The hostel in day 1 has a shower with "hot" water, which you'll pay for.. it's up to you whether or not you want to pay for it. We used baby wipes for 2 days. Also, since you're at a high elevation and in a desert, bring at least 3L of water per person/per day.. The guides don't pack enough water for people on the car. You'll get soda, but, that doesn't hydrate.
