This is a great experience, staying amongst the vines, just outside Cafayate, in Salta province in NW Argentina. If you are travelling in NW Argentina I suggest you take route 68 from Salta to Cafayate because of the sensational mountain and valley scenery, simply some of the best in the world. But also lovers of high altitude wines will want to visit Cafayate and then somewhere to stay is needed. This is an old colonial building converted into some very spacious bedrooms and there’s also an excellent restaurant. The swimming pool, like every one we encountered in Argentina and Chile is too cold to use – an insulating cover rolled out at night to retain the heat of the day is all that is needed, but that’s not how they do things here.
But this is really an extraordinary place to stay plus the staff are so helpful.
The bicycles to borrow are not all maintained to the very best standard

This hotel is fine but not quite up to the standards one might expect of such a well rated hotel. The grounds, the pool, the views are magnificent. The service and the people working there were all very nice and helpful. They gave us a nice glass of wine when we arrived. The room is fine. The bed was good and the bathroom was also but it lacked the something special we've found in other similar hotels. The room was slightly tired. No turn down service. So good but not great.

The brochure we got before we visited Vinas de Cafayate Wine Resort was really amazing so our expectations were sky-high. Too bad reality is always less attractive than pictures and PR. Do not misunderstand: the room was ok, though basically furnished, it had a good bed and airco and a fan were present. But we missed a refrigerator. We could upgrade to another room that had a television and a refrigerator for 360 pesos per night extra (approximately 50 dollars). And the chairs on the shared verandah were backbreaking. So we asked for a better chair and staff brought it! Breakfast is fine and dinner good, but not cheap. If you like white wine, try Torrontes. The road to the main square of Cafayate is a badly maintained road, that is true but is no exception in Argentina. Would like to take a rough road? Try Ruta 40 from Cafayate - San Carlos - Cachi which was a route of Dakar 2013-2014. From Cachi take route 42 and 33 in the direction of Salta and turn right on route 68 back to Cafayate. After a very long day relax in the resort with a good meal and wine.

Stayed here one night during my short trip within Salta. I was glad to get here after a long drive from San Antonio de los Cobres through Salta and then here in Cafayate - the room was large and very comfortable. Staff were very friendly and the check-in process was a breeze. Meals at their in-house restaurant were also very decent. I was only sorry that I didn't have the time to stay longer.

We spent a wonderful four days at Vinas in September 2013. Room was huge and very comfortable. Loved having our own patio looking out over the vineyard. We ate in the restaurant almost every evening for dinner and every morning for breakfast, and the food was fantastic! Staff was pleasant and helpful. We enjoyed a glass of wine in the great room in the evenings. Took a hike up into the hills near the resort. All in all, a terrific place to stay in Cafayate.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the vineyard are more picturesque

The hotel has wonderful large rooms with a traditional feel. The grounds are manicured and show a degree of care and polish. Bug screens on the windows allow you to enjoy the fresh evening air rather than confining AC. Although there is no television in the room, you do not miss it as the view from your balcony (which you share with other guests) is very enjoyable and you'll find your main activity sipping wine as you relax on one of your reclining chairs. The location is indeed very nice, as the hotel is surrounded by mountains on one side and the vineyards on the other. Our room unfortunately gave straight on the pool, making the view less stellar.

The hotel is a ways from Cafayate (15 minutes) and the only way there is through a badly maintained dirt road. Although this is not unusual in Cafayate, it made going back and forth to the town a chore. This became an issue in our 3 night stay as the menu of the restaurant is quite limited and the food uneven. The traditional steak on the first evening was good but the lasagna on the second evening was a mess and we couldn't eat more than a few bites.

Service does not meet what you would expect from this type of establishment. We were there during the holidays so this may have contributed to it but staff was not helpful at all when inquiring about options in the region. They did not offer the bikes mentioned in other reviews nor any other particular help. They didn't even advise us of the closure of the dirt road one day and any other options to get to town.

Overall, a good hotel but with other wineries in the region increasingly developing options for tourists, it left us wondering if there were not better choices out there in this price range. I would not recommend it for more than one or two nights.

Room Tip: Take a room away from the pool.

Beautiful situated next to vineyards.
We had a clean and spacious room facing the vineyards.
We prefer this over a room facing the pool.
Very good restaurant, very friendly personnel.
Good oppurtunity to take the free mountainbikes to visit the wineries.
