Horseshoe Canyon Ranch
Reviewed February 10, 2013

Our family of 5 (children aged 8,7 and 4) spent our summer vaction at the ranch. We were looking for a more active alternative to our usual week at the beach. We are all still talking about it and planning when we will go back.

My 7 year old daughter loves horses and we initially thought the horse back riding would be our favorite activity. The trail rides were more advanced and interesting than we thought, but the rock climbing was the star activity. The organized climbing as part of the daily schedule was amazing. The guides are so knowledgeable and so fun! We learned a lot and had a fantastic time. Our favorite was the East Side Via Ferrata. Apparently, theirs is the only one of its kind in the US.

We loved the food and the lodge. As a mother of 3, not having to decide what we were eating for any meal of the week may have been the best part. We showed up at the lodge at meal time and the food was great. Don't expect gourmet food. You're at a dude ranch, after all. However, there is usually a salad bar and everything was very tasty. My children loved the cookies in the afternoon.

Maybe the best part of the whole experience is the staff. The Johnson family is so warm and welcoming and goes out of their way to make sure you have a great time. Everyone on staff is fun, energetic and genuinely seems to enjoy being there.

Do your family a favor and try this place out. It is fun!! Our time there flew by and we can't wait to return!

The staff at HCR are all wonderful. They are mostly family and make you feel like family. They eat meals with you socialize with you and cry when you leave. From the beautiful horseback rides thru the woods or the zip line across the canyon it beats any amusement park by miles. When we were there people of all ages were participating from 3 - 70 years old. Do as much or as little as you want. Its beautiful and peaceful just to sit on your front porch and watch the sun rise over the canyon or the horses and goats graze right up to you. It is a vacation that me and my daughter will never forget. The drive is beautiful and worth every mile.

Our family of 6 (50,47, 20, 19, 16, 15) spent our summer family vacation at the ranch. Our kids are still talking about it. It was great

If you are looking for a great adventure that puts family back into the word family go here. At the dining hall, family dinner, great food and nowhere to run off to...no cell phones or laptops just family time.

Horseback riding, Climbing, Hiking, and a lot more of activities can be enjoyed from the novice to the expert. The food was excellant and.....bountiful!

Barry and Amy run a great place, they are very friendly when you engage them, but they are not the types to intrude on your family time. Wonderful Hosts.

Room Tip: ask for the cabin closest to the dining hall....the hill is a killer!

Until I went here I didn't think Arkansas had anything to offer. This place is a DEAL. Cheap camping/climbing, along with amazing views everywhere. If you're going for a long stint of camping, they have a nice paid shower so you don't have to get too earthy.
I don't want to start a fight on here, but I'd like to respectfully respond to the one poor rating they recieved. If someone tells you to go here if you'd like to be bored out of your mind... they have already gone out of their mind and you should heavily discount anything they say about this place or anywhere else they review. Chances are they couldn't even have a good time in Disneyland, and Disneyland is the shiz.

We went to HCR over spring break in 2012. We were blessed with 80+ degree weather, making our experience so much more perfect. In all honesty, I never anticipated that the vacation would be as amazing as it was. My 9 and 11 year old gained a sense of confidence through handling the horses on terrain that most 'family trail rides' don't inspire, as well as learning to rock climb, rapel, zip line, etc. Okay, my husband and I also got to feel and enjoy that confidence boost! It was incredibly uplifting. The staff was fantastic an fun to be around. The scenery was so beautiful. The food was great. Good solid family fun, and when you leave, everyone feels better about themselves. What else could you possibly be looking for in a family vacation??

Room Tip: We traveled with another family and shared the 'condo' style cabin.

Jason & all the folks at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch were terrific. This weekend the cabins were booked so we just spent the day there. The colorful fall leaves were beautiful! The rock climbing was fun and safe with Jason as our guide. Though I learned camping is available and lots of climbers bring their own equipment there. I enjoyed the fast, long zip line ride too! There was lots more to do there too, like horseback riding and hiking. This is a rugged, outdoor place so city slickers beware. There is a ditch in the road a low car wouldn't be able to pass over. So drive a truck there if you can. Stop and view the elk at dusk nearby for free. So fun! And, venture on into the town of Jasper just for a lil sight seeing and good food at Ozark or the Inn.

You could have 2x a day horseback rides if wanted, rockclimbing/zipline/rappel to critter hunts and river swim/cliff jumping!!
NEVER a dull moment unless u just wanted it!
Jason, Timber, chef, owners and mny more staff I take my hats off to you!! You really know how to make your guests get our of there comfort zones and experience life!!
