Why are are the other reviewers so keen on this place? The reality - cold bedroom with single glazing so lots of traffic roar from the motorway, grotty bathroom with peeling wallpaper, towel rail coming away from the wall, dodgy toilet seat, uncomfortable beds, noisy locals bar, awful dated decor, very average pub style food, no sign of the promised warm welcome (Steve was away?). Could find nothing to commend about this place.

This hotel is situated just off the M74 on the B7076 just north of lockerbie. Its a small family run hotel with a few rooms. The staff were very friendly with a nice bar, the restaurant served very good food at reasonable prices and you could eat in the bar, restaurant or the conservatory which faces west and catches the warmth of thee setting sun. I was put in room 3 (the one with the door that had been forced at one point in its long years although to be fair it did lock) which had a nice view the motorway and lands beyond, out of a dormer type window over the conservatory. The room itself was basic, with a 3/4 bed (comfortable enough for me) built in wardrobe, set of built in drawers under the window (old... probably built in when the building was being put up) small table with tea/coffee making facilities (although the kettle was faulty and had to raise the kettle up from the base to get electric contact) Small flat screen tele with digi box (picture very good) alarm clock, the shower wc was basic with an instsant electric shower wash hand basin with shaver point over, light (sink old and tended to drip throughout the night).
Breakfasts were good and served with a smile from the staff, usual choices were available, and I must say, the full scottish breakfast was good and enough to set you up for the day. I also booked this hotel for the journey back home (stayed in same room No.3, would have liked to try another room)
Would I stay at this hotel again... Yes because it does break up a journey from Nottingham to Inverness quite nicely and yes because it was at a very low price. (£35/night) so you cant expect too much.

Picked up on this lovely place as a journey break on the way to the Scottish Highlands, it's just of the main M74 at Junction 16. Very welcoming place, had a real laugh with the locals who were in the bar, great evening meal and a good nights sleep, we will very definitely stay here again on the way up to the Highlands next time. Thoroughly recommend it as a break in a long journey, or even just for a coffee

Room Tip: All the rooms are pretty much the same, they do have family rooms though

If I could give this owner a gold star I would. The poor man is obviously totally dedicated to his hotel and seems to work round the clock. What a lovely guy, and nothing seems too much trouble. I rang ahead being a pain really, saying we would be late, and could we have a bath not a shower, and would there be food etc etc and he was so accommodating and helpful. he said he would stay up till midnight if he had to, to greet us and yes we could have a bath and yes he would do us food at anytime if we did not manage to get fed on our journey from a scottish island to the isle of man.We also needed to be up and away really early and we quite understood if we couldnt have breakfast. But no, this superman of the hotel industry offered to get up at 5am to give us breakfast if we needed it. What a guy !!!! ok the bedrooms are a bit iffy, but they are spacious, warm, in fact very warm, clean and comfortable. The bed was very comfy with super white sheets. Breakfast was superb. We stay in ten times more expensive hotels all the time and have far less service and far worse breakfasts. We liked the attention to detail with brekky.......real mushrooms not catering, real tomatoes not tinned, lovely bacon, beautifully done eggs and proper dundee marmalade in a pot not a horrible bit of sugar and water in a plastic square. For £50 quid this was a steal, and to anyone out there who is considering it, go on give it a go, you wont be dissappointed and the owner is a Gem.

Room Tip: Ask for anything, nothing is too much trouble !

Dinwoodie Lodge is a bit tricky to find now that the old A74 has been bypassed by the new motorway but it's well worth the effort. Leave the M74 at Junction 16 heading south or Junction 17 going north and take the B7076 (the renumbered old road). The hotel is a little south of Johnstonebridge or around 6 miles north of Lockerbie.

Why, you might say, am I saying all this?

Because as an alternative to a ghastly motorway service station it's like entering a different world! Where the hotel owner welcomes you. Where the coffee is real. Where the scones and cakes are really home baked. And more.

I called there recently for an afternoon tea and it was WONDERFUL. Everything freshly made - yes, there was a bit of a wait but this is not Fast Food and the break from the M74 was very good anyway. We has tea/coffee, scones with jam and butter, cake and shortbread - all, as I said - freshly home baked in a comforatble lounge.

How much? It was £6.75. Now that's a good deal for one person with this quality, but we were charged that price for THREE of us. What a bargain!

The hotel also serves hot meals at lunchtime and evening meals, so you can be sure of a great break on a long journey.

A 4 night stay, plus lunches and dinners, all fab. Steve and the team are very caring and helpful.
I'm 29, female and very safety aware. I stay away from home on my own all the time but never the less, i always look for family run SAFE places that i feel very at home and able to sleep soundly in my bed. I am pleased to say i feel very at home here (i actually went to the bar last night with my pj's on, with a coat over obviously!).
We also used the dinning room as a training room, as i teach people to do nails with Bellissima Gel. Steve was very helpful throughout the day and the cost of the training room was highly competative. During the course 10 ladies had lunch, all of the 10 loved the food, the diet has gone out of the window!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
