Description: Come and enjoy life in the slow lane at the traditional Compasses Inn. This charming pub is situated in the hamlet of Littley Green which lies in the heart of the underated Essex countryside. This dog and child friendly Victorian pub, formerly known as the Ridley's Brewery Tap, is steeped in history and tradition. It offers warm Guest Accommodation rooms and serves local food, including the famous Essex Huffer, alongside some of the best real ales in Essex, prizing itself on its traditionally well kept cellar. So if you are looking for a relaxing time with a pint of real ale whether it be in the garden on a sunny day or some hot traditional pub food by a warm open fire in the depths of winter, The Compasses welcomes you.We look forward to seeing you soon.Joss Ridley.

“Just perfect”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 16, 2013

Dropped into meet a friend as it was in the right place geographically. Well it was a brilliant choice exactly the way a pub should be. The bear was perfect, just right and the food was very good we had fish and chips selected from a small menu, the type I prefer, crispest batter and perfect chips.

It was a Monday evening and we were treated to a wide variety of live music a number of individuals turned up with guitars and banjoes and the music started, I don't know if this is a Monday thing.

I would love it if this was closer, I would be a regular.

“A fantastic trip down memory lane”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 14, 2013

We lived in nearby Great Leighs 22 years ago and when we received an invite to a wedding at nearby Leez Priory we decided to stay at this local pub where we used to drink local Ridleys beer accompanied by huffers complete with various fillings (huffers are large triangular shaped bread rolls). Since we lived there they have added 5 well appointed rooms to the side of the pub. The quality of the place is illustrated by people waiting at the front door for opening time and the place was full of locals, walkers, bikers and well behaved dogs within the hour. The welcome was warm and friendly, the beer was excellent (Essex CAMRA Pub of the Year 2012), the bar meals looked appetizing and our breakfast the following morning was full and tasty. The location, in open Essex countryside, is ideal for anyone looking for an old fashioned, laid back, friendly pub with comfortable rooms and good access to the main towns and places of interest. I will be speaking to my 2 biking colleagues to arrange a long weekend with wives to walk, ride, eat, drink and spend a couple more restful nights in this fantastic pub. Visit and you won't be disappointed.

“This is what pub should be”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 11, 2013

This is what pub should be. Great staff, great beer and good honest food. I can't commend it enough. Given its rural location there are not many who live near by but for those who do, they don't know how lucky they are. Another contributor on this site said 'don't expect a gastro pub'. They are right but for me that is a bonus. It is PUB and it also serves good food. It is also clearly the heart of the local community.
Well done to Joss Ridley and his staff. They should be immensely proud and of what they have achieved and continue to achieve.

“Lovely modern/traditional country Inn”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 6, 2013

What a lovely stay! The staff were friendly and helpful. The rooms are as beautiful as their pictures suggest. The surrounding area is delightful. A stone's throw from Lees Priory where we went to a wedding. Thanks for a great night away! :-)
