The hotel is situated on a hill over looking a plain with the great Zimbabwean ruins in the distance. The rooms are pretty impressive, very spacious with a ceiling fan as well. Only negative with the room is that the bed area is about 4" above the rest of the floor. If one gets up and doesn't remember or doesn't see the edge, they can fall and get hurt. I told management to put some kind of illuminating paint so at least one can see the edge at night. The Internet was not working though the manager allowed me to use his computer. It is free when working but not in your room. The office staff was very accommodating. The negative has to do with the food which was adequate at best. Though water is provided free in the room, it will cost you in the dining room not a lot but not free.

Stayed at the lodge in August for 3 nights for a family wedding. The lodge was empty when we arrived, we were shown 3 lodges and asked to choose. Decided on room 6 because of location and full length mirror. The room was just amazing. Cleaned to a very high standard you would think you are the first guests to stay in there. The pool area was nice for sun bathing and towels were provided for the pool. Wifi worked very well throughout the hotel. Drinks very dear at the resort, no fridge in rooms.

The let down was the restaurant. Had dinner first night and it was served after a LNG wait from the first person getting their dinner to me. The food was cold. The chef very grumpy. We paid for the dinner at the table and also for breakfast after eating. These items were then billed again at check out. We were also asked to pay for the stay on arrival. If these issues are sorted, potential of a Great Hotel. We ate in Masvingo the rest of the stay.

The girls at reception were just fantastic. The food and deco for the wedding was amazing. Beautiful wedding.

Room Tip: Keep receipts as may be billed twice.

We have stayed at this lodge three times prior to this last visit which was on 21st Dec 2013.
We were a group of 11, and arrived without a reservation, and fortunately there were rooms available.
However the disappointment came with dinner.
Firstly, we were quite prepared to do our own BBQ, when we mentioned this to the reception clerk, she told us that if we had dinner in the restaurant, then they would include breakfast at no charge - at face value not too bad, however. . . . . . .
Probably 8 of our group of 11 had ordered the Lamb Stew for dinner, at a price of US $20 per head each person was served up with 4 tiny, bony cubes of lamb, 2 half potatoes, and small portions of pumpkin and green beans.
The portions were totally inadequate for any adult, and to add insult to injury the 4 cubes were too bony and the stew was not very good. The kitchen staff obviously had not envisaged the arrival of additional guests and tried to apportion a small stew amongst a greater number of persons, we were not the only guests to complain, numerous others guests in the dining room also complained bitterly. At US$20 this dinner was a tasteless disgrace that wouldn't have satisfied a 2 year old.
Secondly, as we were promised breakfast for free, we presented ourselves for breakfast bright and early as we still had considerable distance to travel. Breakfast was the normal fare, and its extremely difficult to destroy bacon and eggs.
But our surprise came when we went to check out.
They had charged us each US$15 per head for bacon and eggs, when we were promise dit for free, when we complained the check-out clerks' only explanation was "Sorry ! !, but we gave you a discount (breakfast is normally US$20 - I want some of what they are smoking) when we asked to speak to the manager to complain about both the dinner and them not keeping their promise, he was "conveniently unavailable".
To say we were peeved is a understatement ! !
This was our fourth and now also the last time we visit Lodge at Ancient City ! ! ! ! !

If you’ve come to see the Great Zimbabwe (and of course you should) you can’t do better than staying at the Lodge at the Ancient City. I first visited in 2011 and I was happy to return in 2013.
Just a short drive from Great Zimbabwe, you’ll recognize the entrance with the expertly crafted chevron pattern of thrush weaving on the fence leading to the entry gates. After announcing yourself to the guard, enter and drive to the reception area.
The reception area is modest and unimposing – not giving you any clue as to the mightily impressive facilities you are about to enter. This whole area of Zimbabwe is famous for its giant stones and the lodge has built itself expertly around the rocks found on this location.
In the main lodge, half the back wall of the bar area is stone, almost big enough to park your car on. As you come up the walk to the outdoor dining area, be sure to see the giant rocks, balanced perfectly above the winding walkway. Even the pool area outside is built around the native rocks which have been here from time immemorial.
You’ll be staying in individual cabins with high, pointed, thatched roofs that have also been built around the rocks on the property. My bedroom’s floor was partially made up of a giant boulder as was part of the bathroom’s architecture. As a former contractor, I can attest to the skill it required to weave these mammoth stones into modern architecture so tastefully.
Food is served outdoors when the temperatures are moderate and the breezes can be divine. Food is top notch and there are multiple selections for each meal – fish and meat with each meal. Vegetarians can special order something as well.

Room Tip: I stayed in cabin 8 - a little bit of a hike - but very quiet.

We enjoyed our stay. Found the staff sensitive to our requirements. Food was good, not fantastic but good enough. Phillip is a great guide for the ruins. There were a couple of minor billing errors which were corrected quickly.

What a wonderful lodge with huge rooms in a stunning location. It has such potential to be fantastic! The staff were attentive and lovely. And then the bill came. We were charged for evening meals we did not have and then again for an extra breakfast - that of a business colleague... (he was charged for the same breakfast too). The food was not great. What perhaps is more shocking is that we wrote to management explaining the issue and have received no word or response as yet. Really poor and so disappointing for what could be something extremely special!
