We have been fortunate to travel to many parts of the world but have to say that this holiday was absolutely fabulous from the moment we left Durban to drive to Mkuze.
The only drawback was our initial meeting at reception, but once she left us at our rooms - everything was perfect from that moment forward.
The rooms are individual bungalows, I guess would be the best description. Truly lovely, I will attach some photos. The views over the falls are so stunning. The plunge pool is refreshing after the heat of the day, private outdoor shower is fabulous, drawn bath after safari....great! the beds very comfortable and the furnishings absolutely perfect for a 'safari' holiday!!! The maids are fantastic....they manage to sneak in and clean the rooms so quickly. They even picked up my hand washing that had fallen off the railing down below.
The food is non-stop. Pre-safari snacks, breakfast after - including eggs, bacon, sausage etc and full cold buffet, lunch....if yu want it is ordered off a menu - high tea with appetizers, desserts and drinks, and a lovely 4 course dinner. I highly recommend the impala when served. Ah....not to forget the snacks and drinks served midway through the game drive.
We saw lions, cheetahs, rhinos, hippos, elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, impala, bok, giraffes, wart hogs (we called them camera hogs - so funny) black adder, jackal, owl, many, many birds...learned about the plants, bugs, and Zulu traditions and culture. Our guides Pen and Norman were great. Pen was happy to answer our many questions about the Zulu way of life.
The serving staff were all really lovely people. Beautiful smiles, genuine, and fun, too. If you are lucky enough to have dinner by the boma, and the staff come out to sing and dance....it is magical. Their voices harmonize beautifully.
Our three nights felt so much longer and we were so sad to leave. It is a magical spot.
When we left I sought out each individual worker...17 in all, and we gave them each 100 rand tip. (rangers we tipped separately)They were so so thankful. I got smiles, hugs and even tears. That was also an emotional moment in Africa for me....that something so little to us, could mean so much to someone.
FYI - No mosquitoes at all when we were there. really surprised us.
We would love to go back.
Oh, one more thing....bring binoculars!!!
