We stayed in two of the tented camps and thoroughly enjoyed it. The tents are clean and comfortable and we did enjoy the company of a hyena one evening, but he was easily hurried away and no problem. We did have a family of eight warthogs sleeping under one of the tents (which are raised up on stilts) but it is a wild and wonderful place. We enjoyed staying in Hilltop but found much more game close to Mpila including many lions, wild dog and elephants. Wonderful.

We recommend Imfolozi Mpila camp in the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park to anyone who likes to be close to nature. We stayed in a self-catering chalet, which was well equipped, clean and comfortable. Wilder than the Hilltop camp, the fact that this camp is unfenced adds some adventure feeling to the visit. Animals passing by just a few metres from the doorstep or the barbecue (braai) area provided an amazing experience and unexpected excitement to our adolescent children used to live in the city. From the chalet veranda we enjoyed stunning views over the hills and were entertained by the visits of warthdogs, impalas and even a family of kudus.

Room Tip: Mpila camp allows you to be close to wildlife but still in a clean and comfortable setting; choose t...

Mpila is in the umflozi section of the combined park. We had booked a 2 person safari tent and were allocated tent 33. This was set one row back from those at the 'front' facing the mountain a but was private and we were surprised to see the large, well appointed separate kitchen unit with full size fridge, cooker etc. the tent itself was a good size and in excellent condition . I know how hard it is to maintain standards in a rustic setting but the tent was fine- clean and no signs if wear and tear. The bathroom was also clean even though it was semi open. Usually these type of facilities can quickly deteriorate but this was first class. There were 2 separate beds with intact mosquito nets though we had no problems with insects . The tent had a brai and we had read of problems with hyenas and monkeys but we had no trouble with either- we only saw one hyena and it was timid- it certainly wasn't attempting to steal food from a lit brai as has been suggested. The park itself is well signposted and the roads are generally good- combination of gravel and tar. We saw rhino, elephant, buffalo, zebra but no lions in umflozi.in summary, I've stayed in a number of safari tents and this was one of the best.

This place is not nearly up to the standard of other KZN facilities and is grossly overpriced. Our first experience was that the credit card machine would not work so we had to use cash. Then we had to fill in numerous forms e.g car registration was asked for 4 times. The chalet had no key or any way of locking it and we were concerned about the lack of security as it was known we would be away on trips in the park. The water could not be drunk but we had not been warned otherwise we could have brought some, but at over $80 a night you would expect drinking water to be available. The electricity went off without warning at 10pm - rather early for many people. The grounds were poorly maintained - weeds everywhere. The chalet was basic in the extreme - no microwave, no toaster, poor culinary equipment, ancient rusting gas cooker, etc. It was superficially clean but no in depth cleaning had been carried out for some time. At the high fees being charged some could be spend on maintenance. On the positive side the beds were comfortable and clean.

We stayed in one of the tents in the camp, that has all the amenities you would expect in a full size apartment. It is clean, very spacious and the facilities are very good.
It has electricity from 7 in the morning until 22 hours at night, but usually a bit longer.
It comes - like all the South African self catering units - with a braai, and that's what really added to the experience: the braai attracts all sorts of wildlife.
If you're in for an experience, try grilling your favorite piece of meat after sunset. Make sure you pick up a stick or some stones first, because you have to chase the odd hyena or aardwolf away.

In the beginning it's really a bit scary, but here's some tips:
- Don't let the hyena come to close. It will run away when you throw a stone at/near it
- It WILL come back ;)
- Make sure you have a proper flashlight, and look for glimmering eyes. It's pitch dark, that's the only way you can see it approaching you
- Make some noise, and take a few sudden steps towards it, when it comes too close. It will go back a little.
- Just make sure you're with the two of you, because when you turn around to get something from the kitchen, you're meat will most likely be gone.

It sounds scary, but in retrospect it's really quite exciting and fun. However, if you're afraid of wild animals, grilling in the kitchen might be a better option for you.

At Mpila camp you really get to feel the wilder side of the bush, with no fences except for the elephant wire. We stayed in a two sleeper tented camp unit. It was very well appointed and comes with your own kitchen and bathroom, not communal facilities which in a big pro. If you are looking for a less rustic stay then I would recommend the chalets. We had a beautiful tent, tucked into the bush, number 36, it is definitely a number to ask for. The shop at Mpila is very under stocked, so ensure that you purchase all of your groceries and drinks before entering the park. The highlight of our stay at Mpila is just how wild it is, from the nyala and impala roaming the camp, to the warthog living under our tent deck, to the hyena's that come at night to search for left overs at your braai, to even having a hyena sniffing at our tent, when trying to go to sleep. The bathroom is slightly open plan, allowing you to look out onto the bush whilst showering in the morning. Electricity goes off at 10 pm every night and only comes back on at 6, so you need to plan around this.

Room Tip: If you are staying in the tented camp ask for number 36.

We stayed in the tented accomodation, perfect for relaxation and right in the middle of the game reserve. We saw so many rhino, elephants etc. the accomodation has everything you need and is clean and well maintained. Do need to watch out for monkeys, they will be in the kitchen like a shot if you leave the door open. Lost an orange at the blink of an eye. Also be prepared for hyena visits at night, we also saw a genet. Cannot recommend this place highly enough
