“A husband dream shattered”
Reviewed April 25, 2013

The mansion was built by a loving husband who wanted to bring his wife to Namibia. Unfortunately she was back in Germany within two years. Not very surprising as even today Luderitz has not much to offer in term of entertainment. Definitely worth the visit as there is a great view of the town.

“A Memory of my own house.”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

I really overstayed in this house because it brought back so many memoiries of a similar house that I was living 10 in my own country, In every room of this house I wanted to stay and imagine how the people lived there years ago. The House keeper had the most beautifull view from her tiny little roofroom. Made me jealous of her and I would have liked to have that tiny room. Enjoy!!

“Almost top of the town.....”
Reviewed December 20, 2012

The steep steps up to the doorway give you an idea of what's to come - lots of steps. So it's not for the physically challenged. The doorway and entrance way are stunning and a slice of pure German culture. The tour guide asked if I actually wanted a tour, as she seemed more interested in her sms's. Nevertheless, she soldiered on, told me everything that she could in robotic style and was then glad to return to her sms's. What a pity.

The house is very engaging and I liked the fact that there are no 'forbidden' areas. You can wander around pretty much wherever you like. I did not appreciate that the entire building can be rented out as a 'guest house' to private parties. Hmmm. There are lots of concessions to the 21st century to make this possible, and while it's a pity, I think that at least the building is being used, generates some income for itself and is not just another museum piece.

The opening times are short - only 2 hours from 2pm on weekdays - and this probably keeps many visitors away. A little bit of effort could change this into a much more lively and interactive tourist attraction. The gardens are a delight and the gardener doubles up as the gate keeper at Kolmanskop in the mornings!

Well worth a visit - especially when you leave your moaning family at the hotel. I took twice as long to go around.

Fabulous photos can be taken from the room at the top when you open the window.

“Some lovely period bits...”
Reviewed November 8, 2012

R20pp gets you entry to the house. A guide explains the history, built in 1909/10 and changed hands several times, now in the ownership of NAMDEB and used for VIP accommodation in Luderitz. It's open to the public 2-4pm weekdays (4-5 on weekends) and closed on public holidays.

A slightly disappointing restoration has been carried out with a mix of 70s/80s style and period furniture reflects its current status as a company guesthouse. Clearly done 'as a company job' rather than by anyone passionate about the accuracy and detail of the restoration. Photos of how it originally looked adorn the walls outside the rooms. Worth a visit for the low entry fee, the beauty of the house itself and the views it offers over Luderitz from the upper floors.

Note there are many stairs to climb to get to the front door, and the house is on two floors, It is not disabled-friendly.

Torn between rating it average and very good. Trip Advisor, when will you offer us the option of just "good"?
