“Functional Central Hotel”
Reviewed March 10, 2013

We spent 5 nights at Hotel Salama in Tafraout just before the Almond Festival and found it to be excellent value and very friendly. We had a small balcony with a view of the busy square/parking lot out front. There was a TV with a couple English channels although we never really found time to watch it. The front desk staff was excellent and the hotel is a great bargain at 256dr. Bfst is an extra 23dr a person and is basic continental, although you can buy extras if you want.

The downsides: we got some fairly cold weather for a couple days and even though our room technically had a heater it didn't really do much. There were plenty of blankets, though, so sleeping was no problem. Also, the hot water was sporadic at best. Didn't have anything but lukewarm for the first few days but was extremely hot the last couple. The wifi was fast (for Morocco) although I don't think you can get it in most rooms - we were able to connect if we sat next to the door.

Room Tip: Rooms in front have balconies and a better view.

I stayed at the Hotel Salama for two nights in March 2013, paying 178 dirhems (just over 13 British pounds) for a good-sized room with a double bed. The bill has to be settled in cash, by the way, as they have no credit card machine. The view from my small balcony (see attached photograph) was delightful, as was that from the roof terrace (photograph also attached). The hotel itself and the rooms are really tastefully and elegantly furnished in traditional Moroccan style - and that is what makes it different from other hotels in town (as far as I could judge). I slept very well indeed. My only complaint is that the 'hot' water was only tepid; it is also only available in the mornings and evenings. The Internet (available via free wi-fi) was available in the hotel lobby, where a fire blazed on my first evening.

The breakfast was fine - fresh orange juice, coffee, a hard-boiled egg, bread, butter, jam and honey. I had dinner in the hotel restaurant on my first evening and it was OK, though not great. The restaurant is also unlicensed. If you fancy beer or wine with your evening meal, go instead to the nearby Kasbah Restaurant (a five minute walk from the hotel, opposite the CTM 'bus stop) or to the Hotel des Amandiers, which sits on top of a small hill (it takes ten to fifteen minutes to walk to from the hotel). As far as I'm aware, these are the only licensed restaurants in town.

Tafraoute is set in a red granite bowl in the Anti-Atlas range and is an attractive small town, though not nearly as appealing as Chefchaouen in the Rif Mountains of the north, in my opinion. The main sights in and around town are remarkable rock formations. I had hoped to catch the annual almond blossom festival, but couldn't quite work out if I was too early or too late for it (there was conflicting information)! The road leading to Tafraoute from Tiznit is amazing, with one narrow hairpin bend after another and drop-dead gorges. Although mountain bikes can be hired, the best way of getting around and seeing the spectacular surrounding countryside is by renting a car.

The location of the hotel is great - just a five minute walk from the CTM 'bus 'station'. It doesn't take long to get anywhere in town, as it's so small.

I would enthusiastically recommend the Hotel Salama and would most certainly stay there again if I re-visited Tafraoute.

This must be about the best choice in Tafraoute. It is central with clean but basic rooms some with balcony overlooking the square. Breakfast is taken in the restaurant downstairs basic but filling. The rooftop terrace has lovely views over the valley. This is a lovely small mountain town, touristed but not "touristy" and as a result you cannot get pampering luxury but the Salama is an excellent choice and good value.

Room Tip: For just a little extra a suite is worthwhile overlooking the square.

I recently spent 5 nights at Hotel Salama whilst taking in the landscapes surrounding Tafraoute.

My room was spacious and modern with tv and air con/heater. Bathroom was pleasant enough. Hot water is available between certain hours in the morning and evening. This was a bit hit and miss. Water was luke warm on most occasions and once, scolding hot.

Reception staff were friendly and welcoming. As were those working in the restaurant. Reasonable English was spoken by most. Laundry service is offered.

There's a fireplace in the lobby which is lit up in the evening. It's a pleasant area in which to sit and meet other travellers. It's also the only place you can connect to the wifi. Connection was fairly good.

There's also a roof terrace with a fine view of the 'Lion's head'.

The restaurant serves up a basic breakfast, coffee throughout the day and meals in the evening. Some dishes need to be ordered a little in advance. Tasty meals can also be found at Café Atlas and the place opposite serves a good breakfast and gets the morning sun (nice in January at least.)

Hotel Salama offers excellent value and a pleasant stay.

Room Tip: You might get a wifi signal in the rooms directly off reception on the ground floor.

I spent one night at Hotel Salama during a 6 week stay in Morocco. It has a very central location that makes it easy to find. The rooms are pretty straight forward without any frill or real character, but they are clean and a great value. For the price it was a good deal and worth the money. A pleasant stay.

We stayed here before and after our trekking trip around the area and found Hotel Salama to be very good value and very well located, right in the centre of Tafraoute. It's clean and comfortable. Though the hot water takes a while to come (and make sure it's on- it only is during parts of the day) and the towels were tiny, I'd say that's a minor inconvenience and that Salama is a VERY nice place for 256 Dh (~ 23 euros) per night for a Double. Breakfast, if you take it, is cheap as well.

I stayed in this hotel every time I visited Tafraoute- 3 times so far. It has always lived to my expectation and as value for money goes I would give it a 5 star rating. At just over 12 Euros per person in a double room with breakfast optional for 23 dirhams each (about 2 Euros) it works a bargain. it is true that you can find a cheaper accommodation but the standard would fall.
Hotel Salama is perfectly located with a large rooftop terrace for observing the hues at sunset and at sunrise, a must sea. A bit tricky to drive to the front door if you don't know Tafraoute well. It is on your right just before the bridge if you are coming from the direction of Tafala or on your left if you are coming from the direction of Izerbi. Rather then trying to explain and confuse you more I suggest you ask anyone on the street and they will very willingly show you the narrow street through the market. If not stop and find it on foot and then drive in once you get familiar. It is simple and easy when you know it. Having driven both roads to Tafraoute I prefer one via Tafala. I asked the receptionist the time of the sunset as I love to watch the changing colours of the surrounding massifs. What he told me was his guess, but later he came to the door of our room and told me the correct time having checked it on the internet. A little touch that tells you more about this friendly place.
