“Absolutely Beautiful!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 20, 2013

I was travelling for the first time in Madagascar. Driving through Tana, I was a little worried by all of the swerving cars, busy markets and being stared at by everyone being the only white person in site! We drove for ages, as it got darker I was looking out of the car at all the dodgy looking hotels becoming increasingly worried about which one I may be staying in (I came here with a tour guide so had no idea where I was going). We turned into the forest and drove for a few ks through, and out of nowhere came the Vakona Forest Lodge. The first thing I saw was the beautiful restaurant sitting over the water, as the light reflected over it beautifully. A major sigh of relief that this is where I was staying!
I was met by the friendly staff, and promptly shown to my room and had my heavy bags carried for me. The room was amazing! Up some stairs so it's away from any noises from cars entering, and has a beautiful garden view! The bed could fit 5 people in it and was very comfortable. Tea and coffee was provided in the room and fresh towels were placed daily.

The food was delicious as well! They had a menu written in English so I knew what I was ordering, and it was served quickly, always with a side serving of fresh bread.

The activities around the area were close by and easy to access too, such as a walk in the reserve, a visit to the lemur island and the small zoo. There was also a night walk available.

I had an issue with my adapter, and could not charge any of my electronics which I was panicking about (mainly my camera). I asked them at reception for any solutions and the very kind man let me borrow the one in reception for the night, I was so grateful for that!

Overall, a truly wonderful stay. Clean, secure, and a beautiful location (the only downside was it's so far from Antananarivo, but at the same time I preferred that).

Thank you so much!

I did not stay in the hotel but did enjoy a splendid meal in the restaurant. Great views over a cleverly constructed lake surrounded by a ring of towering trees. The food was good not great, service was superb and overall ambience was memorable. A worthwhile night stop over or evening meal if you are ever in the area.

This is a well designed, well kept, and beautiful lodge in the midst of a scenic rainforest. The staff is friendly and helpful. The dining room has great views and the food is very good.(They served the tastest and most tender Zebu that we had at any time on the island.) Our cabin which was near the swimming pool was spacious and clean with a great shower and a lovely porch with chairs for sitting outside. On top of the fine facilities they have their own lemer island with human habituated lemers that will sit on your shoulder - great fun!

We stayed here at the start of a 2 week tour of Madagascar, there is a nice atmosphere with very helpful staff and interesting grounds. It was very damp though because of the rain; towels, bed linen etc never seemed properly dry. Bungalows are a reasonable size with decent bathroom, a safe, mozzie nets, fridge, a tea/coffee tray and chairs and table on a covered terrace to sit outside. Electricity available 24/7. Food and drink in the restaurant was very good and a fair price but you need to pay cash in local currency. Some bungalows are along the drive and up some steepish steps, others on flatter ground behind and around the lake. There are lakes in the grounds and one has 4 species of habituated rescue lemurs; you get a small boat across and the guide gives you pieces of banana on your hand and the lemurs then jump onto your shoulder (or head) to be fed. They have very soft paws and are quite light; makes a good photo opportunity! The other islands have lemurs but no human access.

It is in a beautiful setting, in the middle of the forest. The rooms are large, clean and spacious with mosquito nets and good working bathrooms. They are equipped with a safe and heating system. All the food is delicious. We stayed 7 days and never got bored. The staff is well trained, very helpful and friendly. It is definitely excellent value for money.

This hotel was surprisingly better than expected with large chalet style rooms with mosquito nets and hot showers on offer. The location to the two rain forest national parks was excellent and the staff were friendly although a little hap hazard when it came to serving meals!

We stayed for three nights and the half board menu was the same each day however when challenged we were able to select for the last night from the a la carte menu.

Whilst the hotel has just started to accept credit cards the reception for the machine is not good and ours did not go through and we had to pay by cash so just be warned!!

There is a nice swimming pool and well maintained gardens as well as some walks you can do alone.

All in all we had a very pleasant stay here and would strongly recommend it!!!

Room Tip: Challenge the set menu if you are there for more than two nights so you can select from the a la car...

The first room we were given no11 was a shocker, it reeked of mould and was located at the end of the resort (cute and private). Fortunately we were able to change to one of the rooms on the hill overlooking the pond. This had only a faint smell of mould and had the extra loft room. This gave the feeling of space even though we did not use it. The food was good and they managed to come up with several vegetarian options. the night walk was a highlight as we saw an owl, several mouse lemurs in the trees, chameleons and frogs. I had walked that area during the day and seen very little so it was great to have our guide show us the animals. I was sad to see the Fossa's kept in very small cages in the reserve. The cartoon madagascar has a lot to answer for (demonising this animal and increasing the need for it to be kept on show). Animals were demented walking in circles.

Room Tip: avoid room 11 and ask for one of the hill top rooms e.g. 22-25.
