“The jewel of Africa indeed”

Recently visited this wonderful game reserve. It was a day trip from Maun. It ranks as one of the most amazing experiences ever. The journey took us amount 2 hours to the South gate. We had seen a huge buffalo herd and three leopards before we even got into the main reserve.
We saw all the grazers in large numbers, elephants. The lions hyenas were elusive so we saw none.

We did the boat ride in the channels of the delta at the 3rd bridge. It was breath taking spent in the delta water channels with elephants eating the papyrus in the channel. The delta water is crystal clear, we managed to see baby crocs swimming.

As December is not the best time to view animals I wonder what it is like in September .

“Game Galore”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 7, 2012

There is a large variety of animals including predators, plains game and the bird life was prolific. Animals were all in peak condition. The first rains had arrived and with that all the Impalas drop their babies. Unfortunately nature is very cruel and these babies provide a feeding haven for the predators.

“Great wildlife experince”

In just 3 days we saw just about everything, apart from leopards. Big game, small mammals, birds galore and tiny frogs! The Botswanan national bird - the Lilac Breasted Roller is beautiful! Look out for it!

“A day in the wild, a life full of memories”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 29, 2012

We went on a day trip arranged by Island Safari's in Maun. It must clearly be said that one day in Moremi is too short. There are options to stay over for longer, you can even camp in the Reserve. However, in a single day we nearly saw all the different species of wildlife there is to see. We saw elephants, antelope, different kinds of buck, giraffes, hippopotamus, kudu, buffaloes, warthogs, even two giant lizards and many birds species, both small and big. We saw fresh tracks of both cheetah and lion, but were unfortunate not to see them as such.
Even though you come very close to these animals, you are very safe. We were accompanies by a very competent guide we and we had a fantastic day.

“Officially my favourite place on Earth!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 16, 2012

I spent 10 days camping with a private tour company (Elephant Trails, Maun, Botswana) and we spent 4 nights in Xakanaxa, 2 nights in Khwai, and 4 nights in Sable Alley.
We stayed on private campsites, not public, and spent a LOT of time out on Game Drives (think from 6am-1pm, and again from 3pm-7pm every day)
The wildlife we saw was incredible- 2 different packs of Wild Dogs and their pups, a couple of prides of lions, a herd of approx 500 buffalo, multitudes of herds of elephants, a leopard and her cub (which we spent 2 days with, going back to watch them again and again) not to mention sable, lechwe, impala, zebra, giraffe etc etc, and the bird life is prolific.
Our last night, our camp was stampeded by a dozen buffalo that had been split of by 3 or 4 lionesses who hunted them right through us... Exhilarating stuff!!!

Like anywhere, you must have patience and you must appreciate everything that you see. If you expecting to see lions killing kudu every 10 minutes, then you are watching too many documentaries and need to get back to reality!!!

There were 2 days where a couple of our group "didn't see anything" because they didn't appreciate the beauty of watching a pair of fish eagles building a nest, or the pair of little bee eaters busy hunting off an eye-level branch, or the Goliath heron (notoriously shy) stealthily stalking prey in a lake.

The roads are hard work, BUT you're in the bush, not on a tarmacked private reserve. There are no fences around moremi, wildlife naturally moves between moremi and chobe and out of Botswana altogether, which makes it all the more incredible.

TIP: If you find a watering hole, or a decent clearing with a small amount of game, spend a couple of hours there. The lack of noise from your vehicle and the roads will guarantee that the wildlife will come to you.
