Belmond Khwai River Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 9, 2013

After spending 2 weeks in South Africa, Zambia, and Botswana, this lodge was by far my favorite! On our first game drive, we saw an active den of wild dogs, then a family of three leopards (who left their impala kill in the tree to walk around our vehicle), and finally a male lion marking his territory at night! Our guides were incredible at finding and explaining the wildlife, and the staff at the hotel were friendly, learning our names quickly and singing for us on at least three separate occasions.

One afternoon after lunch, I tried to catch up on my journaling while sitting in the hammock on my tent porch. But I was unable to do so because of the parade of animals just across the river--at least 8 elephants, 20 hippos, and two types of antelopes kept me busy watching instead. The elephants waded into the water and began crossing over to our side, so we headed to the dining area, but what an incredible afternoon!

This is a jewel overlooking the Khwai River which has hippos, birds, elephants, antelopes, and many other animals which can be admired from the porch of your tented room or the main deck of the lodge. The stars cover the sky, and planets and nebula can be seen through the telescope. The rooms are lovely and very comfortable. The meals are delicious and exciting. The game drives are thrilling, and we saw wild dogs, leopards, lions, elephants, various types of birds, and many many more animals. Celo, Moses, Ness, and Richard are excellent and knowledgeable guides. Charlotte and Ish do a fabulous job of running the camp and making one's stay a memorable experience. The lodge is a jewel of Africa.

Our stay at the Khwai River Lodge could not have been better. The "tents" are roomy and extremely comfortable with spectacular views of the river and it's wildlife. The game drives are each an adventure of their own never knowing what you will see and NEVER being disappointed in what appears. Don't miss doing a "night game drive". The stars are beyond belief and the wildlife seen at night rivals everything viewed in daylight. Wonderful. And if you are there on a Wednesday evening, the traditional Boma barbeque dinner is a special treat with entertainment provided by the very talented staff. An added note: As a Type 1 diabetic, lodge staff were most understanding of my dietary requirements being sure at every meal there were selections compatible with my diet and always having boxed fruit juice and fresh fruit on hand (including on game drives) should I need it for treating hypoglycemia. A very special place operated by Charlotte and her team of knowledgeable, talented and hospitable personnel. They all make you feel like a member of the Khwai River Lodge family. Truly Wonderful. We will return.

This place is terrific. Rooms, food, personnel, game-drives, guides...........all were wonderful. This placeand the people here was the highlight of our trip to Africa. Highly, highly recommended!! Be sure to take a good camera with a telephoto lens and a pair of binoculars. Only saw one mosquito in mid-May.

This place has ideal location, ideal facilities, wonderful guides, great tea time. Sitting on the front porch of my personal home away from home and watching about 15 elephants drink (including 3 babies) was a highlight. I highly recomment this place to everyone.

This camp was a great contrast to Eagle Island Camp and all game drives were conducted by jeep. From the moment of our welcome to our departure, the attitude and friendliness of the staff was proof of the culture instilled by Debbie the camp manager. She has a great team and treats staff and clients as part of her family. Service was above expectations in all areas.

Wi-fi is also a welcome addition and is available in all rooms. A nice swimming pool is great to cool off after game drives.

Ness was our very experienced guide, ably assisted by other guides via radio. As a result we enjoyed two close encounters with leopards. Since speaking to many people on tour, this was a rare privilege. We also saw lionesses on our 3 night stay. Nothing stops sundown drinks, demonstrated by the photo of Ness who managed to recover our drinks from the submerged jeep.

We understand there are plans to move the spa to Eagle Island Lodge, one of the other Orient Express lodges. This would be disappointing for guests as we enjoyed our massage after the long drives and believe that people who frequent luxury lodges have an expectation a spa is part of the experience.

Room Tip: All rooms are good

We stayed at all 3 Orient Express Camps. They were all amazing. Khwai had so many animals for us to see. Hundreds of elephants, hippos, leopards, lions, birds, badger, monkeys, warthogs and more. They welcomed us with singing and fresh fruit drinks. The "tents" were amazing and beautiful.I can not say enough good about this place! The food was awesome. Our guide was amazing, taught us so much.
