Sanctuary Chief's Camp
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed December 7, 2012

We came to Chief's Camp via Stanley's Camp and Baines'Camp - both Sanctuary properties of such high quality that it was difficult to imagine anything better. Yet, we were ever so pleasantly surprised by this stunning property. From witnessing four lionesses stalking a warthog within five minutes of arrival to the outdoor shower with an elephant for company, we knew where we belonged. Throw in superb accommodation, excellent food, friendly and efficient staff, knowledgeable guides, a manager with a great sense of humour and you have the recipe for a very memorable experience. Lets not forget the stars of Chief's Camp - the wonderful and abundant wildlife. We were fortunate to see the big five plus so much more. For us, there were no negatives. We enjoyed every minute of our two night stay and we have no hesitation in recommending Chief's Camp and the other two Sanctuary properties. A hint - if the budget allows, take a 30 minute helicopter ride. You will get a totally different perspective of what you have witnessed on the ground. Enjoy.

Room Tip: Accommodation furthest from central communal area is likely to have greater wildlife visitation.

We have just returned from a "life changing" experience at Sanctuary Chief's Camp in the Delta. The outstanding service from Sanctuary Retreats staff started when we first booked our holiday and continued until we landed on Chief's Island. What really struck us was the cleanliness, absolute attention to detail, the aesthetics of the entire camp and more important the wonderful staff that greeted us on our arrival and attended to our every need for the next 5 days. Game was in abundance with sightings of Leopard, Lion, Rhino, Wild Dogs and a 4 metre Python to name but a few. Benson our Guide was exceptional and virtually tracked and found all the game we requested on each drive - Thank you Benson for all the effort you put into making this so special. The highlight was a 45 minute helicopter flip over the swamps which gave us a whole new perspective of game concentrations in the area. Thank you to Anton, Precious, Kevin, Anelie and their entire team for such an executive experience in the bush - I guarantee you we will be back.

Room Tip: All accommodation is very secluded and private with no one being better than the next.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Chief's Camp. The entire staff was warm, friendly and accomodating. We saw and spoke to the managers everyday and they were very attentive to our needs. We asked to dine alone at dinner every night except the Boma night and as a result we did not mind eating breakfast with our guide and drive mates. I have several food allergies and the chef was very accomodating and always made sure my food was fine. I truly appreciated the gluten free muffins that were baked daily and provided on our morning drive and high tea. We saw all animals that we wanted to see and more even though it was very hot and dry. Our guide, Sky, was fantastic. Loved waking every morning to the warthogs and impala dining off of our porch and the elephants rolling in the mud while we ate lunch. Everything about our stay was excellent. Highly recommended

Room Tip: You cannot go wrong with any room since they all look out over the water but number 12 is the most p...

A quick flight hop from Stanley's camp (please read the review) and a warm reception at Chief's Camp by the staff who had us quickly settled in and planning activities for our 2 night stay. Our room was very comfortable and we loved the outside shower. Jonathon was our guide and we had the opportunity to see lions, leopards, many forms of antelope, zebra, giraffes, hippos, beautiful birds... Every place has something different, just go with it! Given the small size of the camp, we were also able to chat with the staff and get to know them a bit better and learn about their lives, families and traditions. Harry kept us entertained with his stories, humour and great food. There was a short electricity outage on one of the days we were there, but the staff were great and tried to do their best to explain the situation to some of the other guests who were trying to make an issue about it. This group left the next day and we had the camp to ourselves for the last night. Thank you Harry, Evelyn and all of the staff for making our stay memorable.

My wife and I spent 2 nights/3days at Chief's Camp last weekend. There's a quick flight from Maun to Moremi and a 25 minute ride from the airstrip. The staff were very friendly and highly attentive to our needs. The property is beautiful, comfortable, and very down to earth. Our cottage was #12, on the far side. The room was spacious, stylish, clean, and full of thoughtful details like personalized messages, bedtime stories, and mini bar with plenty of water (in reusable glass bottles to reduce plastic waste). They will stock the mini bar with refreshments of choice. It was cold at night when we were there, but the bed was warm and the coffee arrived every morning at 6. There were 2 showers (indoor and outdoor). There are also 2 sitting areas (indoor and outdoor). The best part of the trip was the game drives. We saw a small pride of 5 lions, 2 leopards, several hyenas, and the usual elephants, giraffes, zebras, and elusive kudu. Birders will enjoy Chief's Island. Our guide Jono was knowledgeable and entertaining. He managed to find plenty of game. The drive schedule was a little different from other African lodges because there are no night drives allowed. We departed around 7am and returned by 11:30 for lunch. Afternoon tea was at 3:30 and the afternoon drive was 4:00pm until dusk. Most everything was included in the price. We opted for the massages, which were fantastic and reasonably priced. The bar and public areas were more fun to hang out in and have a drink. The pool was nice. An elephant was wandering around just next to the pool fence when we were swimming. There are a limited number of guests, so the setting feels very intimate. The food was great. The wines were nice. We live in Botswana and have traveled around South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, and Mozambique. Chief's Camp is the best we've seen in Africa. We had a resident discount and booked at the last minute, so the cost was lower. It was still expensive but worth every pula. I highly recommend the experience.

I never thought I would write a review for any place I have stayed but Chief's camp was such a huge disappointment I just had to. My husband and I have had the pleasure of staying in some of the best camps all over Africa and have never seen such a poorly run operation. The manager was nowhere to be found and when he was he was rude to his staff. How do you not have the guest's beverage of choice for sundowners? Is beer that difficult to put in the cooler? Basic, basic,basic... When given the option of dining alone or with others we asked to dine alone. That request was ignored. I also understand that if you don't book thru A&K ( owners of Sanctuary Camps) they don't care if they take care of you or not. The staff was great but that only goes so far.

Room Tip: Make sure your tent isn't next to the kitchen

Dear Mr. and Mrs. McParland,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review on Sanctuary Chief’s Camp. We were pleased to hear that you thought our staff where great. However, we would like to address those aspects of your stay that were less than perfect and highlighted in your feedback.

At Sanctuary Chief’s Camp it is normal for guests to sit with their guide and other guests that they share a game drive vehicle with during breakfast and lunch. If you had specified to our camp managers that you wanted to dine alone for all meals we would have been more than happy to arrange this for you. Our camp managers are very hard-working and care passionately about providing a high-level of service to all our guests, we are sorry you did not feel that this was the case.

We apologise that your room was below your expectation and that your beverage of choice was not provided for your sundowners, this is unacceptable and this has been taken up with management as well as your guide and this will be dealt with accordingly.

Please rest assured that this is certainly not indicative of the level of service that we aim to provide at Sanctuary Chiefs Camp. Our past reviews on Tripadvisor are testimony to this..

Please accept our sincere apologies and thank you again for your honest feedback, it is feedback like this that allows us to keep continuing to strive for perfection in service and guest experience.

Warm regards

From the very first greeting song, Chief's Camp exceeded all of our expectations. Being our first time in Africa, and our first safari camp, we weren't sure what to expect but we certainly had not expected this level of luxury.
The staff members were all lovely and so accommodating and helpful. Nothing was too much for them. With only a small number of rooms, the place feels extremely exclusive and on the game drives, you feel like the only people out there. We only crossed another vehicle from a different camp once in our time at Chief's. The game driving was amazing. We saw all of the big five in our first two days plus wild dogs, which we were told were very rare to see. Our guide Sky was excellent. Very knowledgeable and experienced, pointing out things and tracking animals that we certainly wouldn't have seen had we been on a self-drive safari.
The only negative of the whole trip was that it was very cold on the nights when we were there and there were no heaters in the room, meaning getting out of bed in the early mornings was particularly difficult!
I would recommend Chief's Camp to anyone.
