“Outstanding hospitality that sets the standard”
Reviewed May 24, 2012

The staff at Chief’s camp are amazing. One felt welcome right from the beautiful musical greeting to the time of departure. Great service and eagerness to help was evident at every touch point, a rarity in this day and age.

The lodge itself is top notch. The accommodation is luxurious but does not lose the charm of being in the bush. I loved the outside shower and the port on arrival back from dinner. The main lounge/veranda area is lovely, with places to sun oneself and totally escape the hubbub of every day activity. One can sit by the pool and watch elephants sloshing through the wetland right in from of you! Meals were a taste sensation, with nothing being too much trouble from the kitchen.
The mokoro ride through the wetland was so relaxing and it was wonderful to experience this globally endangered habitat (elephant and all) so close up.

Our ranger was Sky. What a great man. His passion for his job was evident at all times and we enjoyed dining with him. He was super keen at all times to spot as many animals as possible and has a great eye for picking up the less commonly viewed stuff such as monitor lizards! Ask for him if you are lucky enough to stay at Chiefs!

Our manager was Brenda. What a lovely lady, interesting to speak with and have at our dinner table. Brenda, you are doing an awesome job!

I only was able to stay a single night at Chief's Camp (with 3 women friends), but the experience felt like a few days. Everything was spectacular--the hospitality, the food, the accommodation, the views, the guide (Sky is excellent! He worked very hard to track the cats), and even the weather was perfect. Brenda, the manager, was first rate. I was impressed that Sanctuary Retreats' staff worked so hard (but with ease) to help us arrive at the camp early in the day and allow us to go on a game drive and have lunch the following day before we flew to our other destination (Stanley's Camp). Pairing Chief's and Stanley's camp is a winning combination. Though Chief's is 5 star and Stanley's 4 star, Stanley's has everything Chief's has in terms of wonderful bedding, nice touches (robes and slippers in the room), fantastic hospitality and excellent food. Plus, at Stanley's Camp, you can go on night drives and off-road so you combining the two camps gives one a fuller experience. I live in Botswana and get to hear of lots of travelers going to the Delta. Very often, the favorite is Chief's!

We stayed at Chief's as [art of a months holiday in Africa. Chief's was our 5th safari camp and the 3rd Sanctuary property.
Having seen pretty much everything we had come to see over the past few weeks, we were hoping for a few different things at Chief's. We weren't disappointed!!
We arrived to the sweet sounds of the staff welcoming us into the camp with a song. You just cant stop smiling! Everyone comes out to greet you and introduce themselves and you instantly feel at home.
The lodge is lovely, with wide verandah's and plenty of places to sit and read or enjoy a drink at the bar. Its very pleasant to while away a few hours watching for elephants or hippos in the grassy waters of the delta There are surprisingly few mozzies here, which makes relaxing in camp much more pleasant than some other places.
The cabins are pleasant and spacious, with a comfy, warm bed and a small sitting area. The bathrooms are good with plenty of bench space and hot water, although I didnt like the open wooden grid over the floor in the indoor shower. If you dropped a lid off the shampoo, it couldnt be retrieved.
The private decks had comfortable seating and we spent quite a few hours just sitting outside, watching the kingfishers fishing. They are quite happy to sit right beside you on the railings and eat their catch.
We were fortunate to have Rex as our guide. He was both a brilliant guide and tracker and an amazing person as well. His whole attitude to life; his love of animals and his dedication to his work was truly inspiring. Everything we wanted to see, Rex found. We saw lots of leopards, including a couple takling turns eating an impala in a tree. He even found me one in a classic pose, sprawled over a branch, legs hanging down - just like I asked...Rex, you're a legend!
Moremi reserve was a brilliant spot for game viewing. We even managed to see the last black rhino left in the Delta! We saw lions. leopards, hyena, hippos, elephant, rhino, giraffe, zebra, kudu and every kind of antelope you could think of - and impala (of course : )) After a few days of very active game driving, including following a hunting party of lions off-road through the acacia scrub, we decided to do something a little different on our last afternoon drive. Rex parked by a water hole and the animals literally came to us. Elephant, baboons, kudu, giraffe, impala.... Sundowners beside another waterhole where we were soon joined by another elephant cow and her calf. It was a truly amazing experience.
The meals were superb and the staff were just awesome. Nothing was too much trouble and every thing was done with a genuine smile. It was truly an unforgettable holiday.
I can't recommend this camp highly enough. Chief's does everything right.

we arrived early PM, had good lunch & settled into room, saw Hippo in river outside window & then went out for 1st drive. They have 12 rooms, all the same. Our driver/tracker was Benson & is known as the "animal whisperer" We saw loads of antelopes, elephants, giraffes, wart hogs & scores of different absolutely beautiful birds. It was less water then Baines & therefore less flying bugs. Stopped for sunset & out comes picknic basket w/ 3 appitizers & your drink of choice. Wake up w/ coffee at 6:00 AM, breakfast at 6:30 & on road by 7:00. Saw wild dogs 15 minutes out of camp & followed them thru brush for 20 min. we lost them as we had to go around lake. we came accross 2 hyena that were finishing up. when we came upon the dogs 1/2 hr later, their bellies were full & they were lazing about 1 hr later came across pride of 13 lion & herd of 30+ zebra about 200 yds away. Benson started to call the zebra & 5-6 came closer & the lions got interested. They started their approach & we saw how they worked together but the zebras were able to get away. I'm not sure I would like to witness a kill, but their stalking was good to watch. Saw 4 of 5 of the big 5. no rhino. To see leopard in bush is beautiul. saw many very young zebra, elephants, giraffe & water buffalo. Tents are large w/ indoor & outdoor shower. Elephants wander grounds. Wonderful experience

Room Tip: further from main house would have more gamebut longer walk

This part of our African safari exceed our expectations in every way. We are a family of 4, with two boys 12 & 14 yrs. We felt like we had arrived at a cross between the Garden of Eden and Jurassic Park, and spent 3 nights in wonder and amazement at this restful, educational, and soul touching resort. My youngest son cried in the airplane when we departed and asked if he could return again.

I would highly recommend Chief's Camp. It was a fantastic all-around experience. The game drives were top notch, the camp setting beautiful, the accommodations comfortable and plush, and the food delicious. But best of all, the camp staff was uniformly friendly, charming and well-informed, which is what I believe sets this camp apart. You feel warmly welcomed and looked after from the moment you arrive. Go and enjoy!

We spent three nights and days at Chief's Camp including New Year's Eve. It's hard to express what a thrill it is to be so very close to leopards and lions that you have to hold your breath not to disturb them! Our wonderful guide had two key phrases that we loved when in the Range Rover with him. "Please be very still" and "DON'T MOVE." We obeyed and had the most incredible wildlife adventures possible. We saw it all: leopards, lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, hippos, rhinos, warthogs(our personal favorites), hyennas, honey badger, crocs, monitor lizards, and more than 100 species of birds. The lodge and those who run it and work in it are top notch. Luxurious bush accommodations in a wonderful wilderness accompanied by great food well-prepared. An under-the-stars barbeque with dancing and singing from the whole staff rendering special Botswana songs made New Year's Eve unforgettable. This lodge will be my standard measure from hence forward. Don't expect I'll ever top it. Not sure I want to.

Room Tip: There are no bad accommodations here.
