Wild African Dogs and the “Big 5” all in one day - superb lodge and lifelong memories

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Aug 15, 2019via mobile
Wow. Saguni Lodge sits on an idyllic curve in a small hippo-filled river on the Moremi reserve in Botswana. Guests sleep in very comfortable canvas chalets, raised up and with a wooden veranda at the front, with mosquito netting where you might expect glass. You are comfortable but part of the environment, which is thrilling at night as the hippos snort and belly-laugh, the hyenas yelp, elephants feed on mopani trees and in the distance, lionesses announce a successful kill. It is magical.
Food and drink are good and plentiful, the camp staff most hospitable, and it was special to tell stories around the fire on the boma, drink in hand, at the end of a day’s game-watching.

Moremi offers unbelievable game viewing which our guide from Saguni, Ness, ensured we saw in safety and comfort from his open-sided vehicle. We stayed two days with our three teenage kids, during which he brought us out in the morning and afternoons, and on one evening for a night-drive too. He was a mine of information, personable and brilliant at putting us exactly where the wild dogs or other animals were about to amble by. In one day we saw dogs and a group of lions first thing, drove around a huge herd of buffalo, had sundowners in a beautiful riverside spot surrounded by elephant and hippos, to where a leopard also skunk down to drink on the opposite bank, and concluded by spotting a rare rhino on our night drive - dogs, plus the “big 5”, impala, waterbuck, kudu and many splendid birds, all in one day.

Saguni Lodge and it’s staff and guides are not cheap, but the experience is intense and the memories extraordinary. We are already planning our return.

The property is at a great location to see animals -- right at your room! or near the main lodge common area. We saw elephants, hippos, and many birds. We heard lots of other animals.

The staff tried to be accommodating. There were a few problems with the way they handle keys -- such as requiring guests to leave keys for the cleaning staff. But the keys were not available to guests when they returned from an animal drive -- so they couldn't get into their rooms/ tents.

The mokoro boat rides were peaceful and give a different view of animals and birds.

The main problem we had was with the 16-passenger vehicle used for game drives. Other guests had the more traditional open-top "jeep" type vehicles with carried about 8 passengers. We were forced to use the "truck" vehicle which bounced people out of the seats and had branches coming in the sides so that people were touched by the branches even if they "ducked."

The manager tried to accommodate our group and listened to our concerns about the "truck" vehicle.

With a few improvements to procedures this could achieve a better rating.

Room tip: some tents are further away from the main lodge and take longer to walk to; but animal viewing is great

Saguni was our favorite safari lodge we stayed at during our trip.

Drives
Our driver was Baruti and he was the best. He found us all the big 4 you can find in this area (Rhinos in the delta are on Chief Island. Unless you stay near that island, you won't see rhinos). He was amazing at tracking, but he was also very fun and made each drive an adventure. Elephants are everywhere around Saguni. You can't go anywhere without seeing elephants (or hippos). We even had the elephants come to get water one morning during breakfast.

If you come in the winter, the morning drives are very cold. You will need layers (I suggest packing a hat and gloves. I didn't, but would have been happy to have them). They supply fleece ponchos to give you another layer and they are very important! I also highly recommend a scarf, even if you aren't coming in the winter. The dust gets everywhere and if you're speeding along to catch up to an animal, it's nice to block some of the dust you are driving through with a scarf.

Tent
The tents are very nice, but the screen doors do not have flaps. You will go to bed with a view outside and with animal activity in the area, it can be a bit scary. Anytime the sun is down, your guide will walk you to/from your tent. The winter mornings are very cold so you will want warm pjs and socks. They give you a "busy baby" (heated water pouch) to sleep with to help with the low temperatures. The tent has bug spray that you can use and a horn to blow if anything happens in the middle of the night.

Meals
The food was amazing. I actually made a comment to my husband that I wish they sold a cook book that I could purchase. You eat all your meals with the others in your safari drives and your guide. This allowed us all to bond and share stories about other drives and what we experienced in the day. It made the camp feel like a family and we were sad to leave all our new friends.

If you want a unique experience of being kept awake by hippos, (because you can count 14 of them in the stream right outside your tent) or having an elephant walk towards your porch while you’re standing on it, or seeing a hippo or hyena cross your path while going back to your tent at night (luckily we were driven back) , this is the place for you. It’s right near a river and smack in the bush. That elephant walked past our tent from point A to point B. We really didn’t feel all that safe walking the long distance to the main area.
I gave it 3 stars because 1) there was no hot water in the shower during the 3 days we wanted to use it. 2) they left one bath towel for two people and did not respond after two requests. 3) the food was lukewarm and something they called “pork belly” was a horrible dish of gristle and cartilage and inedible, lukewarm fat. 4) they returned our laundry wet.
It was the worst of four camps on out OAT safari.

Perhaps the place about which we had lowest expectations – no idea, why – and hence our biggest surprise. Just brilliant. Highly comfortable tented accommodation. Dream location overlooking permanent water (with pod upon pod of hippo). Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful staff, with Face an astoundingly brilliant ranger / tracker / guide. Brilliantly run. Swimming pool. Multiple dining and drinking / socialising areas Superb food produced by Big Josh and his team. Great location near the airstrip with easy access to the Khwai concession and also Moremi. Mokoro "cruise" was fun, and we felt incredibly safe with Philemon and Cain even given the proximity of element and the "river policemen". And then it’s owned and run by San rather than overseas interests, which should be a massive selling point. (We didn’t really appreciate how many of the lodges are overseas owned.) Deserves a heap more business, and not just because of our ludicrously good game drives that saw us enjoy four leopard sightings including three in one drive (and two in 15 minutes). Spent two days at the end of our trip, and would have happily spent two more. MASSIVE RECOMMENDATION.

We spent 4 nights at this beautiful lodge instead of hopping from camp to camp, and are really glad we did. We got to know the staff and relaxed in the tranquil setting, as well as making the most of safari drives and 2 mokoro trips. All were wonderful and revealed more wildlife than we’d expected. Our guide on the Jeep safaris was Amos, who was born and raised in the Delta, in a village within walking distance from the lodge. We learned so much from him during the drives and mealtimes, and enjoyed his stories immensely. Our power on both Moro trips was Eric, who was also raised on the Delta. Both guides knew the names and behaviours of every bird and animal we happened to see.
The food at Saguni was plentiful and delicious, our accommodation in a luxury river tent was comfortable, the staff and guides were friendly and efficient, and the managers, Julie and Roman, did their utmost to make sure we felt welcome. All in all, an outstanding experience in a lodge with a family feeling.
