I was traveling with a group of 18 South Africans. We had planned to stay (again) at the Nata Lodge, but a 2008 bush fire had that hotel closed for 2009 (reopening Sept. 2009). Elephant Sands is a mix of a dozen or so chalets and also some basic camping sites. We stayed a total of 2 nights - once going from Jo'berg to Chobe and once on the return. The enttrance into the lodge is a good initial test of your driving in sand ability. I actually switched my vehicle into 4 wheel to drive in. Also, the main road 15 km on either side of the lodge has bad pothole damage - so bad that vehicles actually drive in the sand parallel to the road in some stretches as the road is a mess.

First stay was at one of the new, still under construction chalets. this is located about 50 meters from the main lodge. We were advised to take care at night, drive over to lodge in vehicle as elephants, wild dog, and hyena are near the lodge. Our room had no screens on open eves and an unfinished bath. rustic. All night we heard animals outside of the rooms - real Africa. On the second stay, we stayed in one of the older chalets. Much nicer, but the door was broken/gone, so a blanket served as the door. There were elephant tracks within 15 feet of the room. that night, we saw why .... WOW ... litterally, the elephants are not at the water hole, but, if you are quiet, walk right up to the swimming pool at the main lodge! On both stays, the food was really nice quality. Very nice boma/campfire each night. while rustic, I actually enjoyed this immersion into nature.

A hidden gem of a campsite! A picturesque watering hole is the focus point at this camp, where animals (Impala, Elephant, Kudu on the day we stayed) come in their droves in the late afternoon for a drink. Overlooking the watering hole in the well-stocked bar area, and the adjoining restaurant serves up a variety of quality meals, including local game specialities. The ablution facilities are very clean, but open-air (no roof). It rained overnight when we stayed & all the toilet paper got competely drenched (maybe toilet paper should be kept undercover?) The staff are very friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend this camp to anyone passing through from Kasane to Nata or vice versa.
