“Comfortable accommodation with great view of the Orinoco from roof top”
Reviewed December 9, 2012

Really lovely converted building. Looks like it might have been a former warehouse.Comfortable accommodation.Wonderful view of the Orinoco from the roof top. Good quiet air conditioner. Free Wifi in reception. Room safe. Food OK, but nothing special. A good choice for stopping off on the way to or from Canaima.

We stayed 1 night before going for an excursion on the Orinoco Delta. When we first arrived in the room we were very happy it. However as we removed the pillows we saw black hair and on the sheet there were sperm spots ! We went down and told the receptionist which unwillingly came to our room to inspect the spots on the sheet. She brought new sheets and was apparently very bored. Not one word of excuse and due to her very disagreable attitude we decided to change the sheet ourselves. We had also asked to wash some clothes (2 pants, 1 short and 3 T-shirts) which were returned completely dirty and creased and have been charged over USD 100.- for this ! Our complaint was snobbishly ignored. It was a very bad experience and we can only recommend to avoid this place.

Ciudad Bolívar is a bit of a staging post between Caracas and La Gran Sabana, there really didn´t seem much to attract a visit in its own right.
An awkward change of travel plans found us there against our will – see my Venezuela Trip Report.

Previously known as Angostura (the Pisco Sour enhancing bitters were invented here) it sits beside the Orinoco, it sounds lovely but disappointed.

The brown river silently slides past the covered market at the end of town where a cheap, good lunch can be found, helped down with a Polar Beer or two (sharply chilled to match its name) to counter the oppressive humidity.

There is a faintly colonial centre that has been painted in bright colours, it doesn´t succeed in enlivening the desultory air.
The Casa Grande de Angostura has been well restored and appears stylish, however the atmosphere inside is equal to its surroundings.

A generously sized room with high ceilings on the principal floor looks across to the river but there is a musty smell coming from somewhere else - the damp carpet by the bathroom.

Yet again, the sheets are too small for the bed, halfway through the night you have a scrunched up sheet and a bare mattress! Why can´t they, and many, many other hotels, provide sheets that fit the bed?

A small roof top pool is most welcome.

The pleasantly decorated restaurant is occupied by only one other couple for dinner, although the table layout suggests a very large group is to be catered for soon. After the waiter checks our order for the third time the wrong dish is still presented.

We chat with the other couple, charming Australians, after dinner we exchange travellers’ tales and are surprised to be asked to leave the restaurant at around nine pm as they want to close up and go home.

We move to the lobby and have to ask for chairs to be provided for us to continue our conversation as there is only one, we learn how he was locked out on the roof the previous evening while he enjoying a cooling swim!

Phew! Just the one night please.

We stayed there for two nights before and after doing the Camaina tour to Salto Angel and really enjoyed it. The hotel is arranged in a rustic, colonial-style type and it is really nice to view the lobby, staying in the diner room or being in the rooms, enjoying the athmosphere. The rooms are clean and comfortable, although the rugs look a little dirty (if I would be the owner, I would not use textile floor but wooden or similar).
From the rooftop terrace, which includes a small swimming pool, you have a magnificant view over the historic city center and the nearby Orinoco river (the riverside is just about 100m away), we really enjoyed watching the sunset there.

We stayed there on New Year's Eve and nowadays Venezuelan people seem to really like "mobile discos" (cars with a lot of speakers bigger then their tires), so sleeping was a little bit problematic but I guess this is not the hotels fault, the other night it was just OK, there is no disturbing nightlife or similar near.

I would definitively stay there again if being in Cuidad Bolivar.

My wife and I stayed here during our honeymoon. We were taken/recommended the hotel by our local travel agent (Saipito Tours - Señor Bernal), who got us 'mates rates'.

We spent just the night here (which for the decling city is probably enough these days).

The staff who were the owners were really good with us.

The whole hotel has been lovingly preserved/renovated and its a pleasure just to look around the courtyard and floors to the rooms.

The rooms were lovelly, really comfortable and quiet.

The rooftop views of the river Orinoco are superb.

We ate in the hotel and the food prepared was of a very high standard. (We actually ate after the kitchen had closed, but the chef kindly offered to rustle up something for us).
Whislt in the hotel we found out that our only credit card (Venezuelan) would not function in the hotel or at the local ATM's, meaning we were in no position to settle our account.
The hotel staff were very helpful and understanding of our predicament and assisted us in finding a solution..........muchas gracias por todo.

We spent one night at La Casa Grande and enjoyed our stay there. The posada is a beautiful old building located near the Malecon in Cuidad Bolivar. The rooms were a little bit dated, but very clean and the rooftop view of the Orinoco River is unbeatable. We thoroughly enjoyed the swimming pool and jacuzzi on the roof top. The staff made us feel welcome and were very helpful.

We really didn't have much time here - arriving late and sadly leaving early. IN that short time the staff were tremendous, very friendly. They showed us round the hotel which is rather nice, especially the surprising roof top terrace, pool and jacuzzi with 360° views of Ciudad Bolivar. Our only real grumble was the ground floor room - no outside windows, but we were there for such a short time that we really didn't care ....
