“Nice...”

Nothing spectacular, but it's ok. The zone is a little bit more secure. Is a good place to have a talk and walk. Specially weekends.

“Nice and relatively safe place to hang out”

The iconic statue and fountain are lovely and I really enjoyed hanging out in this plaza, especially in the breezy evenings.

“It's ok”

Emblematic plaza in Caracas, but nothing too special to do. Some fast food restaurants around it

“Heart of town”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 31, 2012

Plaza Francia, or Plaza Altamira, has become the new heart of the city. Once, when Caracas was innocent and naïve, the hot spot for meeting up with friends was the Plaza Bolivar. Nowadays, downtown Caracas, a.k.a, "El Centro", has been rehabilitated, and it's all looking nice and shiny (new), but I honestly believe that Plaza Altamira is the new epicenter of social life. It's right under La Castellana and Los Palos Grandes, two of the most exclusive neighborhoods, brimming with restaurants and bars, (which are normally very expensive for people like me, but still it's nice to be near them, haha), so it's a natural reference point. It's also got a nice old obelisk (no, not from Egypt, sorry), and gardens and the like. Book fair is held there in April. and in Christmas there are cultural and music activities. It's cute and it's always full of people, I'd recommend sitting there and watching the sun go down on a regular Monday.
Word to the wise: after dark, it's been known to become a popular spot for the LGBT community. If you got a problem with that, just go judge people's lifestyles somewhere else.
